Conclusion Most probably, the outbreak began with a human source spread through
severe understaffing and poor hand hygiene compliance. Last March
2023 our hand hygiene compliance rate for hand washing was 30.00%
and 3.00% for hand rub. In addition, we have experienced a massive
resignation in the nursing department, resulting in a shortage of staff
and limiting the rotating staff that could care for PICU patients.
Furthermore, the recommended Nurse – Patient Ratio for PICU 1 nurse
is to 3 patients, but with the current staffing our ratio is 1 nurse is to 9
patients. With this given ratio the quality of care and infection
prevention and control adherence is compromised.
IPCC Recommendation The IPCC would like to emphasize on the importance of good hand
hygiene compliance and ensure adequate staffing thru appropriation of
bed capacity to available number of nurses. No objection to resume
PICU Operation, awaiting final disposition of pediatric team.
