“Bread and Water”

Ivy Marie Apa
Watercolor and acrylic on found parchments (joint Bible pages)
2019

Description - On a flat and framed page of Biblical passages, a worn-out

brown and green cup sleeve with the unmistakable emblem of a well-
known coffee brand lies.

Analysis - In contrast to the fine state of the sheet, the fading cup sleeve
aims to explore the fundamental human tendency to worship creatures
higher than themselves to avert decay.

Interpretation – The crumpled piece of cardboard casts a shadow on the

Exodus readings, making it appear as if it has lost its resilience. Despite the
object's hardness appearing to reveal its steadily deteriorating state, faint
lines of text may be seen beneath the cardboard.

Judgment - This work also attempts to answer the question of who are the
highest entities that mankind worship, whether they are omnipotent figures
from above or transient material commodities.
