CHAPTER IV

DATA ANALYSIS

This chapter discusses the process of collecting the data. It answers in which

have been revealed in the statements of the problem. It needs to explain the

significance of the data used in this study.

4.1 Findings and Analysis

4.1.1 Analysis of denotative, connotative, and myth meaning of “Us”

movie poster

The horror movie is a horror genre written by Jordan Peele published on

March 22nd, 2019. In the poster, two identical faces represent two different families

whose faces are similar. This movie tells the audience about social issues. The

social issues reality in the United States constricts in this movie, such as racism

against a group or a group of people being ignored. Even though they have the same

city, it is an effort to criticize the Director Movie's social issues for the government

(Peele:2019). Charging social issues is an innovation, meaning that criticism of

social problems becomes a means of communicating new ideas besides judging old

ideas for social change. The existence of social criticism functions to expose various

issues. It concerns about conservative attitudes in society to make social change.

The writer chooses this movie to analyze the horror movie poster of "Us." In the

sign, four colors assume the role of the situation of the film.

The horror movie poster is famous in the movie production of western. The

sign has a different meaning in a different context. For these reasons, the writer

would like to analyze the denotation, connotation, and myth meanings in this poster.

There are some signifiers and signified in the movie poster. In the section, the writer

mentions the parts of them. The signifiers are ‘a woman looks sad, the letters are

written in white, and a gold glove.’ The signified, including the denotative,

connotative, and myths meanings itself.

4.1.1.1 Denotative meanings

The writer shows the table of denotation signs and the denotative meanings.

The denotative purpose is a literal meaning. In the table, there are four signs. The

writer attempts to explain the denotative meaning. This poster clarifies the

denotative definitions. It reflects the literal sense, which is the real meaning in

words.
25

Sign The denotative meanings

The dark background is without

any lighting.

A woman looks sad and holds a

mask.

She holds a mask that identical to

her face.

She has black skin.

A word/two letters consist of the

letter ‘U and S’.

The letters are written in white.

She wears a redshirt.

She wears a gold glove.

Table I: Sign and The Denotative meaning of “Us”

In the 'Us' movie poster, there are some denotative meanings, including the

dark background without any lighting, a woman who looks sad, and holds a mask.

She holds a mask that is identical to her face. She has black skin. It has a word or

two letters consist of the letters' U and S'. The letters are written in white. She wears
26

a redshirt. She wears a gold glove. It would be the next explanation in the

connotative and myths meaning. It needs to deepen the description of this movie

poster.

4.1.1.2 Connotative meanings

The writer would like to clarify the connotative meanings which are found

in denotative senses. The dark background without any lighting refers to a scene in

the movie Adelaide is terrifying and how she feels suffering at that moment. The

lack of light symbolizes that something in the dark that no one can gain the

conditions. It seems sadness or melancholy that is enveloping. A person who needs

to care about someone who wants to be a particular person: 'Us' tells of the terror

faced by the Adelaide Wilson family on the are vacation on the east coast especially

at United States. This terror becomes even horrified when they meet a family whose

faces are very similar to Adelaide and her children.

Regarding the story's idea, Jordan Peele (2019) explained that 'Us'

originated from an anecdote that tells about a pair of twins, which once made him

very scared. The woman who looks sad. She holds a mask. It means that in the

United States, concern about the doppelganger or something, the same faces look

unhappy and shrouded in grief. The point is that doppelganger is not real or a mere

'shadow.' It means someone who has a similar face but another face. According to

Jordan Peele (2019), the director, a doppelganger, is his enemy because sometimes

the biggest enemy is ourselves.

Thus, it made the counterpart as a metaphor for a group of people who exile

and ignored. They were also American. Reportedly, it related to immigrants who
27

come to America. That's why in the movie, there is a scene when Gabe asks red

who they are. Red replies that they are American. As if to emphasize that this group

of outcasts are Americans who should have the same rights and positions. Apart

from that, there is also the final scene where Red and Adelaide kill each other. In

that classroom that is underground, Red says that Tethered is a human-like us. It

seems like Peele would like to say that. They are human -like us. Black skin is skin

color (Wierzbicka:1996, p. 301). A person's skin color is an irrefutable visual fact

that is impossible to hide. In contrast, the race is a constructed, quasi-scientific

classification that is often only visible on a government form, especially in

America. Black signified fearful, mysterious, and energy of the unknown

(Wierzbicka:1996, p.301). It is horrifying, mysterious, and influential of new and

black with darkness, death, and hidden (Wierzbicka:1996, p.301). The two most

unusual things in the movie are the golden scissors and rabbits. The director, Jordan

Peele (2019), admits that he is afraid of rabbits. According to Jordan Peele (2019),

rabbits are cute but creepy animals, mostly when seen from their eyes. In the movie

'Us,' there are lots of symbols and things related to rabbits. Red explains that

someone called Tethered can only eat rabbits alive. It turns out that the rabbit

symbolizes rebirth, like the Tethered, who had been the shadow of their twins. She

killed the original twins. She feels reborn and has a new life. Besides that, the

audience often hear the term guinea pig. Peele (2019) wanted to relate that Tethered

was a guinea pig that had abandoned. There is a theory that also says that the rabbit

likened to a Tethered. In the beginning, the rabbit is in a cage. It is like Tethered

trapped underground. After they managed to escape the rabbits, it also came out of
28

the cell. There is a theory that scissors were made with two blades joined together.

The scissors will follow the movement of the other edge. The scissors it like those

two things work together and follow one another like Tethered, who must follow

all the twins (Peele:2019). Two words consisting of vocal and consonant has the

significance of that one unwritten, and one consonant can read 'Us.' It has value

ourselves. This movie presents a smart storyline and unpredictable even until the

end of the film. Each conflict handles so well. It makes the audience "hold their

breath" throughout the movie because of the tension. The murder scene may be "a

little sad" for those of the audience who cannot stand seeing the bloody scene. Those

of the audience who like movies with plot twists, get ready because this movie has

a mind-blowing ending. Yet, there are some conflicts or information that should not

be included in the film. These things were not explained further, even until the

movie finished, which left the audience confused. There are even conflicts that are

'not over' until the end of the movie. The director wants to invite the audience to

make their version of the storyline. Yet, this is the greatness of the film 'Us.'

Designed plots make this movie different from another horror. Cruel, rude, terrible,

so as a human civilization today. The tense scene will still touch throughout the

film. This movie is more complicated than 'Get Out.' The red clothes mean the

courage of people who gain racial issues in the United States. These hot issues grew

up a long time ago. People have black skin unaccepted by this country. They would

like to protect their land from black people or immigrants. In the world, the United

States has more immigrants than any other country. Based on this movie, the

immigrants' population is also very diverse, with about every country in the world
29

represented among United States immigrants. In this country that Mexico is the

most immigrant population in the United States. Red has a meaning the head of the

rope, which is the tether is the director's interpretation of forgotten human

(Wierzbicka:1996, p. 314). Tethered join hands at the end of the movie. This scene

is a reminder of the Hand Across America campaign in 1986. In the campaign,

people hold hands for 15 minutes to help those starving and homeless. The audience

see that the little shirt Adelaide in Santa Cruz is wearing is the Hand Across

America T-shirt. The Hand Across America campaign see as America's ambition

to create a wall from the outside world. This scene might address the decision of

US President Donald Trump to make a wall for It outside immigrants on the grounds

of protecting Americans. Even though the greater danger is sometimes not from

outside, but what arises. Peele (2019) would like to message all Americans to join

hands and be together again.

Based on the context that the red color is the color that stands out the most

colors and most used. Traffic control systems have used the red color at stop signs

and traffic lights. Red is a lucky color for culture Chine. The color red is also used

to mark things as the following: "Red Carpet" is the term for a carpet that stretched

out to passed for people who fall into the VIP category. 'Red Alert' is a marker to

show a warning about something dangerous. The color red is also perceived as a

symbol of masculinity in the phrases' Red-hot' and 'Red-Bloodies Male.' Yet, Red

is more systematic than the euphemistic association for English. The red Indians

got their nickname from two sources: one for defiling them from Indian Indians

(brown or black), another from the red ocher paint that some Native Americans and
30

Native Canadians wore in ceremonies and wars. Due to negative attitudes towards

Native Americans, stereotyped within the West, the term Red Indian is almost

disused as dysphemistic. Thus, on the whole, the connotations of the color red

reflect the positive and negative aspects of our lifeblood (Jose Luis:1998).

4.1.1.3 Myth meanings

Signs were found on denotative and connotative meanings. The importance

of that is related to the myth meanings. At first, the sentences have that associated

with full of suffering in the movie's situation. The dark background is the

atmosphere situation and activities (Wierzbicka:1996, p. 301). The individual or

group is suffering because of something that happened in their family. It is the

condition in which the actor has a bad position. It specifies that the situation that

found the counterpart with the same body starts from the face, shape of eyes, and

other resemblance. Second, twin faces are also called a counterpart. Based on this

story context, the concept of parallel universe that Jordan Peele tries to carry in this

movie, "Us," which in Indonesian means "Kita," in some ways can be a satire for

ourselves. In some ways, "Us" has also become a satire for the US (United States),

the manifestation of a false American dream. At the beginning of the movie, the

audience was given a narration about the underground station aisle across America.

It can be regarded as a satire for the social inequality of the lower social classes and

blacks in America who have quite a difference in life. It still happens today. The

charity festival, titled Hands Across America in 1986, which is also a reference

scene in this movie, also has its meaning. As the writer knows, the festival, which

was able to make about 6 million US citizens hold hands for 15 minutes and form
31

the longest human chain in almost all parts of America at that time, become a

festival that succeeded in showing the concern of the American people for hunger

in Africa. The festival is also seen as an example of American ambitions in forming

their own 'wall' for the world to see. The real wall has been created by Trump now,

which is a divider between America and Mexico. In the one scene that says that the

Wilson family had to flee to Mexico, this contradicts what Trump seems to want to

do to protect his citizens from Mexican immigrants' interference. Trump considers

dangerous because sometimes the greater danger is not coming from outside the

wall, but what arises from within the wall itself. The presence of doppelganger

terror also has its meaning. Many say and believe if the audience meet with a

doppelganger, then that is a bad sign and one will or must die because here cannot

be 2 people who live in the same world. Third, black skin culture counterparts are

unaccepted by the United States government (Staples, Brent;2008). People just as

an immigrant come from Mexico and others country. However, the government ban

peoples' black skin stayed in their country. Based on this movie, people who have

black skin want to move to Mexico. It is builds upon this story that black skin

dominate by immigrant people who wants to be American. Fourth, 'we' means of

ourselves. It seems in the title of 'us' movie poster. It depends on someone who

believes that 'we' have two sides, including positives and negatives. The word 'us'

has a significant power to attract people's perceptions about ourselves. The title 'Us'

is the country known as the United States, which the country has known only in

America. Fifth, people who wear the clothes red represent that someone has a brave

soul, firm, not easily give up on what they fought. In the context, red clothes also
32

interpret a foreign culture use red to sign prohibition or danger. Instead of the

United States, the color red to identify the most dangerous is a terrorist attack with

a warning sign. Sixth, the red color is the color of fire, the blood of life, the blood

of a slaughtered person, or menstruation (Allan:2009). The red color can make an

object look very clear (eye-catching). This color can enhance human metabolism,

increase breathing, and raise blood pressure. This color is effortless to see, which is

why this color is used as signs of traffic signs, prohibited signs, fire-fighting

equipment, active or positive power lines, and various threat warnings. The red also

often symbolizes the nature of courage; this color is used on flags of countries in

the world. In Chinese culture, Red is a lucky color. The red color is associated with

energy, war, strength, determination, desire, love, and associated emotions

synonymous with shame and anger (Wierzbicka:1996, p. 314). Seventh, the hand

glove means a weapon used to protect their arm. This weapon is some sport gloves.

The person's style in sports to wear gloves. The analysis essentially relies on

interpreting and understanding the linguistics context where the signs occur in the

horror movie poster. The writer presents the finding of the semiotic analysis of

instance of color terms (signs) of "Us" red, gold, black, and white in the movie

poster. According to a consistent, balanced account of explanation and analysis that

will not be influenced by the frequencies of colors. The first color sign 'red'

interprets the courage of black people to fight racism in America. In this country,

the skin is a weapon or identity in every people. Black skin has meaning in a lower

class, while white skin is an upper class. The second color sign 'gold' is a success,

champion, and glory in every country, especially America. This country desire gets
33

the glory in their government. The third color sign 'black' represents that people

have black skin as a lower class or poverty. The fourth color sign 'white' represents

the skin color that has by America's people. The words 'white' have a significant

power meaning for a superior. Every white person born and raised in the US who

is not racist is a miracle (Elliot:2020). Representation of the movie "Us" by Jordan

Peele illustrates the relevance to the reality of life in several societies that people

from several societies realize with different things. The same goal is to fight racism

issues where this movie makes a person more respectful, accepting differences in

ethnicity, race, and culture, the plus value obtained. This movie will have a sense

of empathy and tolerance towards racism issues in people's daily activities.

In ‘Us,’ the writer concludes that this horror movie poster has four signs.

The poster shows some signs, including visual and verbal signs. The visual sign is

related to the text and the meaning of the text. Meanwhile, the verbal related to the

poster itself. The writer suggests this movie poster mostly famous because the

movie is related to the cultural background. It is a more exciting story about racism,

race, and stigma. The movie also talks about the social relationship in the city ‘Us.’

The most valuable movie is related to the United States culture.

4.1.2 Analysis of denotative, connotative, and myth meaning of “The

Prodigy” movie poster

The horror movie is a horror genre written by Nicholas McCarthy, starring

Jackson Robert Scott, who also played Georgie in the 2017 film "IT." The movie

was produced by Tripp Vinson, who also had "The Exorcism" by Emily Rose and

directed by Nicholas McCarthy. Reporting from IMDB, the film tells the audience
34

Sarah's story, who concerns about her son Miles' behavior. He suspected that dark

forces were possessing Miles. He grew up with strange and worrying behavior, like

catching spiders only to destroy them. Miles also spoke Hungarian in his sleep. He

also has two different eye colors, called heterochromia. Heterochromia is a

condition when the colored part of the eye is colorful. The strange events continue

to occur, beginning when he was eight years old, who lives with his caretaker, Zoe,

when his parents go on a date. Zoe invites Miles to play hide and seek while playing,

the guardian's leg injures by a broken light bulb that fell in the basements.

Nevertheless, Miles claimed both to remember playing the game and did not

know what happened to his caregivers. Miles also did something worrying outside

the house until finally, he has taken to a psychiatrist named dr. Elaine Strasser.

Thus, the two meet a colleague name, Arthur Jacobsen. During the meeting, they

discussed Miles' behavior and his relationship with someone else's experience. The

Prodigy has been running since February 19 in all theatres in the country.

35

The writer would like to analyze denotation, connotation, and myth

meanings in 'The Prodigy' poster. There are several signs in the poster, including

expression, text, and images. It is the sign that can express the denotative meaning

in this table. There are some signifiers and signified in the movie poster. In the

section, the writer mentions the parts of them. The signifiers are ‘Mile’s expression,

Mile’s mother expression, the tagline, and other.’ The signified, including the

denotative, connotative, and myths meanings itself.

4.1.2.1 Denotative meanings

In table, the writer shows the denotative meaning in this section. This poster

concerns about denotative meanings. It means the literal sense, which is the real

meaning in words. This sign is a part of the whole horror movie posters. It is in the

poster that has seven symbols on the study of the denotative, connotative, and myth

meanings. It is the denotative meaning only in this table. The writer would like to

explain and myths meanings in the next sub-theme. The explanation of the

denotative meaning will be as detail as possible.

Yet, the writer would like to explain the denotative meaning as detailed as

possible in connotation and myth meanings. It needs to deepen the explanation of

the denotative, connotative, and myth meanings in the existing signs. It is also

supported by the theory and existing quotations related to the study.

4.1.2.2 Connotative meanings

The writer would like to explain the connotative meanings in the movie

poster. First, the date interprets something that defines a specific day in releasing

the movie. Meanwhile, someone can watch the film at the cinema. In this context,
37

the date means that the special include that the audience can watch the

movie. Second, the tagline is a short sentence, including the words, alphabets, and

meaning. It is the harsh words explain something which including some of the clue

about the story. According to Wirania (2016), a slogan or tagline is a short sentence

or preface describing a brand's product or service. It frequently appears in

advertisements, packaging, and other marketing programs. The tagline influences

customer buying behavior and evokes emotional responses. The slogan is a short

phrase that captures the core, personality, and positioning of the company. Third,

the title written in white has spirits and courage of the theme.

For this reason, white represents a classic tone of the movie poster. White

represents simplicity, purity, and perfection. It had to identify one horror movie title

that used white to convey a model's brand message. White represents the simplicity

of their product in form and function to bring news to the general public. The white

color also comes with an absolute or sterile. In the movie, some actors include Miles

(Sarah's son) and Sarah (Mile's mother). Fourth, Miles's expression symbolizes that

he can see something, including the strange creature or something not see using

eyes. The horror movie that involves child characters as the main characters

possessed by demons or evil spirits is still an exciting concept for horror

filmmakers. Like the latest horror movie entitled 'The Prodigy.' Sarah, a mother,

played by Taylor Schilling, manages to be an elegant young mother with Miles's

son. Since her birth, she has shown different behaviors from small children in

general and what is terrible is her possessed by an evil spirit. It is even more

apparent because Miles is Sarah's son. He can speak Hungarian every night he
38

sleeps, and he has two different eye colors or heterochromia. Sarah is mother Miles.

She grapples with her maternal instincts to love and protect her only child by

investigating what happened. Miles does terrible things to his schoolmates, so Sarah

decides to take him to a psychiatrist named Dr. Elaine Strasser (Paula Boudreau),

who is then met by a more skilled colleague named Arthur Jacobsen. It turns out

that the evil spirit within Miles is healthier, so Arthur retreats to help Sarah. Fifth,

Miles's mother facial expression can relate to his son Miles because the strange

creatures want to bring Miles. Miles is not like other children and dangerous. There

is something wrong with miles. In the movie, Miles grew up with a level of

intelligence beyond other normal children. Sarah and John agreed to enroll Miles

into a particular school under his teacher's guidance, Dr. Elaine. Miles suspected of

having a dark force possessing Miles. He grew up with strange and worrying

behavior, like catching spiders only to destroy them. Based on the scene in this

movie. Sixth, Emily Rose, as a producer, has creative make the movie. People

appreciate her creativity. Seventh, the mother holds his son's shoulder can make

someone feels safe close with his mother. In connotative meanings, the sign

symbolizes mother has a particular way to protect his son. Based on the scene,

Mile's mother was afraid of his condition.

4.1.2.3 Myth meanings

In the myth meanings, the writer would like to improve sign-on horror

movie posters—first, date, and place as a reference in every life even in shows and

theaters. The words' date' means an exceptional food with a sweet taste where

someone can eat the food in every fasting. They also have told a special day for
39

someone who will meet a special someone who loves yours. The place is a relative

position in a scale or sequence or a particular building, locality, area, or part in the

section where someone can watch or view a play or movie, especially theatre. The

movie poster's tagline reflects his mom asking why someone or ghost always

follows his son. Miles's mother raised the eyebrows when someone brought his

son. The son brings out evil, it means that the strange creature is an anxious child's

human. Third, the title written in white is a controversial theme, which is the

importance of meaning that the primary color in this movie. Fourth, Mile's

expression symbolizes someone who has the feeling in their life, which happened

in future life. Someone would like to express their story even deep name and talk

with people who believe in every small word or up the record talks. Fifth, a mother

loves her son. It has several perspectives in mothers' love, which a feeling grows

up in every family in their life. Pet investigated by the writer who has authority in

said these statements or analyze. Sixth, the producer has a good idea for their effort.

It can make someone feel special, including the movie showing a beautiful

struggle, great action, and extraordinary effort. Seventh, the mother holds his son,

who is loved by Mile's mother. In this context, it means to protect their son, who

makes the future life. The mother is aware of growing up in a day today.

Although it is not the traditional black and white, the posters' dominant

colors are still dark to represent horror. The writer associates eyesore and threat

with darker themes. The lack of a movie may go with the idea that the mess. Based

on mystery and soul rather than straight-up blood and gore. The tint of grey in the

poster may represent a home; it may link with the title 'the prodigy,' which could
40

create connections with these types of concepts. The text on the poster there is very

little, and where there is some, it tends to be very small. The writer would like to

mention and explain the visual and verbal signs in "The Prodigy" horror movie

poster. The verbal warning is "FROM A PRODUCER OF THE EXORCISM OF

EMILY ROSE," which means that someone who has an idea of the movie concept,

the Prodigy between exorcism movie the same producer including active in all the

process of filmmaking even the scriptwriter. The verbal sign is "THE PRODIGY"

these words mean the title which explains the main focus of the content in the

movie. The verbal warning is "WHAT'S WRONG WITH MILES?" tells his mom

asks for something why someone or ghost always follows his son. The verbal sign

is "IN THEATERS FEBRUARY 8, 2019," which means that the words inform the

release based on the date. Someone would like to watch the movie. It must have

come to the theaters everywhere. The schedule is the film's release based on the

date and based on customers' requests in the movie show. This horror movie poster

has several visual signs: The horror movie poster uses its background color.

In ‘The Prodigy,’ the writer concludes that the movie poster has seven

signs. The poster can imply the meaning of the text. The meaning of the text

consists of denotative, connotative, and myth meanings. It is not only the meaning

of the text but also the image of the poster itself. This poster has significant value

to analyze because the poster also related to the culture, especially the United

States and Canada. The filming locations in this movie are Toronto and Canada.

The writer is excited to explore this poster to discover the real meanings, general

meaning, and myth meanings.

4.1.3 Analysis of denotative, connotative, and myth meaning of “The Lodge”

movie poster

The Lodge has been written by Franz and Sergio Casci and starring Riley

Keough, Jaeden Martell, Lia McHugh, Alicia Silverstone, and Richard Armitage.

The horror movie was published in 2019, directed by Veronica Franz and Severin

Fiala. The movie production of the Lodge is Hammer Movie Productions. Then, the

release date was July 27th, 2019. The writer chooses this movie posters as the third

poster in the study. Richard Hall, an investigative writer, told his wife, devout

Catholic Laura, that he wanted to divorce after a long separation to marry Grace,

the young woman who was the only survivor of her father's Christian sect who

committed mass suicide. Richard and Grace meet when he writes a book about the

sect. Laura later committed suicide, which destroys the couple's children, teen

Aidan and young Mia. Six months later, Richard announced to the thanksgiving

children that they word spend Christmas with Grace in a family home in

Massachusetts to get to know each other. A few days before Christmas, four-person

arrived home, where children were hostile to Grace and abandoned attempts to

establish a relationship with them.

In the morning, Grace woke up and found that her belongings, including

clothes, psychiatric drugs, and a dog, are missing. He tried to go to the nearest town

and found the cross hut where he saw his father calling him from inside—finally

traveled in the circle that brought him home. Aidan insisted that they were purgatory

and seemed to hang himself in the attic, which he survived was proof that they were

dead. Grace had a nervous breakdown, which increased when she discovered that
42

her dog freeze on the road. To prove his belief that they were in purgatory, he shot

him with a gun, killing him.

The writer would like to analyze denotation, connotation, and myth

meanings in 'The Lodge' poster. There are several signs in the poster, including

expression, text, and images. It is the sign that can express the denotative meaning

in this table. There are some signifiers and signified in the movie poster. In the

4.1.3.1 Denotative meanings

In this table, the writer shows the denotative meaning in this section. Before

the writer explains the indicative and the sign, this poster entitled "The Lodge"

movie poster motivates denotative meanings. It means the literal sense, which is the

real meaning in words. The real meaning is related to the poster itself. This poster

is also called visual signs.

Table III: Sign and The Denotative meaning of “The Lodge”

In 'The Lodge' movie poster, there are some denotative meanings, including

the white title with the tagline, three people starring out of the window, the tagline,

father's expression of fear, son's expression, and mother's expression of afraid. It

would be the next explanation in the connotative and myths meaning. It needs to

deepen the description of this movie poster.

4.1.3.2 Connotative meanings

In the study, the Lodge is a title of a horror movie poster. This poster has a

significant connotative meaning. The poster shows the victim. The victim has a

power victim means people who have a place where strangers happened in their

situation. The title is written in white with the tagline has the meaning of the

strength of the spiritual moment. Three people starring out of the window. It implies

the three people's explanations, including father, mother, and son, monitoring their

home situation. In other words, the state of affairs in an emergency condition. In

the world, someone has a fear that can cause stress. Someone has their own to look

to the future. The tagline has a subjective meaning consisting of detailed

information about the product or something in advertising. Based on this context,

the slogan has a significant purpose in every moment, including introducing quality
45

brands, products, and tools to the words. Father's expression has meant a curious

what something will have come to their house as a father has a responsibility to

protect his child and wife. Son's expression is still related to the context. In the

movie, this child felt fear of creatures that frightened his family. Then, the mother's

expression showed that she was still afraid of their situation. In her mind, someone

mysterious could come everywhere, even in the home, outside the house, and in

other places. In her expression, it shows still that the mother was afraid of her son.

4.1.3.3 Myth meanings

At first, the title is written in white symbolizes spirits and ghosts. It is the

sign that something using the idea or someone can imply the concept of the myth

meaning. The writer investigates how the tagline informs people who cannot come

to their house in the culture. The Lodge is a new dark thriller about a woman (Riley

Keough) stranded in a snowy cabin in the mountains with her hostile son and

daughter. The Lodge uses silence in the order set out in the cult bunker and then in

the shadows of the cabin, and there are some brief but torture businesses with a gun.

The movie is silent and frightening. It is about as far as possible from the fun

multiplex horror of the house. The film's final shot will send this to the farthest side

of the meter for some viewers. It ticks many boxes that tend to make people: suicide,

religious fanaticism, worship, mental illness, children in distress, miniatures, yappy

pets killed. It is a grim and often compelling movie, but the characters blurred so

that their destiny does not destroy the audience. The dominants are the color

consisting of the blurred dark. It means something happened in their life. It is

emotional that build by the actress who plays the character. The strangest thing
46

possessed by this story is not the items that lost, the cult, or the behavior of the

father who took a vacation and then went home to work. Instead, the strangest thing

in the story is the perspective that changes from Mia to Grace. People do not commit

suicide to heaven. That is the thing that worries them most about Mia, a little girl

whose mother died from shooting her head because of being divorced, but no one

understands Mia's fear. His father wants to marry the young woman. It was once a

patient counseling himself. Nor was his brother, Aidan, who was angry because

their father had chosen a "psychopath" girl survivor from a sect of suicide. The

incident becomes frightening when these two 'suicide' agents met. Mia and Aidan

are invited by their father to take a vacation with Grace, the handsome stepmother,

to get along. As soon as my father left, leaving the three of them in the villa in a

snowstorm before Christmas, unexplained events began. The heater is off. The time

that does not move day by day. Food and items disappeared, including Mia's doll

dressed up like her mother and Grace's anti-stress drug, which was still dealing with

trauma survivors. Aidan's assumption corrects; that the three of them are dead.

Leaving the family in a remote place without a car in the snow is not a surefire

parenting technique. This movie takes on a closed environment with the story of a

young woman caring for two children. The characteristics of these three central

figures are similar. The girl who uses dolls as emotional crutches. Teenage boys

who love family but can also seem a little stubborn and creepy. In both movies,

there are scenes involving teenage boys, young women, and bathrooms. Then, there

is the character of a young woman who expected to bond with her two children,

while she has trauma in the past - she has a personal fear of something that came
47

from her, and this character will walk downward spiral into madness. Although the

audience also relies on dream scenes to convey horror moments, The Lodge does

not deceive the audience with a full sequence of events that don't happen like The

Turning. Manuscript and direction of the duo director Severin Fiala-Veronika Franz

come with artsy but better. The target of the 'trapped' horror story is, of course,

ambiguity. The movie seems to want to put the audience in the same confused mood

that the characters feel. The mystery that happened, coupled with the sensation of

losing sanity, became the goal of this movie's horror. Namely, the development is

of the atmosphere. The scary atmosphere, the sensation of being amid oddity,

presented so 'stylish' by the camera. The color tone also contributes to creating the

impression that blue, cold colors give a gray world that the audience is uncertain

whether it is only a fantasy or reality. This movie seems to want to have resembled

Hereditary (2018) because The Lodge also draws our attention to comparing real-

world perspectives with the world of dolls. This movie's opening scene parallels a

doll's house with a real home, which will show that Mia's dollhouse has the same

interior as the interior of the family villa where they are trapped later.

The dolls in there are in a particular position, which will later 'become a

reality' when the real characters are in the role as predicted. Since the beginning of

the movie has trapped the audience into mystery, into uncertainty. As a hook, the

audience continues to be fixed in the seat, wondering in the heart there is a

supernatural power or all that is evidence have planned terrible deeds in the villa

later. The mystery is engaging. Throughout the movie will continue to bring the

audience back to the comparison of the dollhouse earlier - used as a transition scene
48

- as a guide during a variety of distractions which unfortunately is more dominating

what the actor means by distraction here is another element of horror, often part of

the character. It does not produce anything but makes the audience confused,

looking for a central perspective. In the spectacle, attitude is crucial. The audience

can only care about the character if the point of view focused on him. The horror

discusses personal fears. The characters need to understand the trauma, the tragedy,

and the thing. According to the terrible feeling, and it can be achieved if the

audience is rarely distracted by others' horror unless their fears are related to the

same thing. The first round seems to have determined this is a story from Mia's

angle. The audience sees her complaints. The audience understands the 'threat'

from Mia's point of view is Grace, the figure of the young woman who at the time

the audience planted information that she is a 'psychopath,' she can somehow

survive from a sect at the age of 12. Then, she is a child who recorded the corpses

of suicide in the denomination. This initial round puts Grace in a mysterious light.

The movie even sets Mia's moment of introduction to her by constructing the

narrative "who is this woman, she trusted. The movie plays with Mia's curiosity

over Grace's face (Riley Keough will pave the cute for various emotions and

insanity). Then in the second half, the audience kept away from Mia and her

perspective. The audience snatched away and then placed in Grace's position. All

of Mia's perspectives had fallen for the audience because now the audience sees

Grace's corner. The survivor who is still traumatized by religious customs - he

shudders at dinner prayers, is afraid to see the cross and the Virgin Mary’s painting

(it seems the writer misidentified the object of the painting). Grace tried to live a
49

normal life. The challenge for Grace is not trauma, but also that these two children

lost their mother because of her. There is haunting guilt. It is hard for Grace to

build relationships when the whole house reminds it of residents of people whose

positions Grace is trying to fill. In reality, it makes the audience choose whom the

characters have to sympathize with, and it will take a long time for the audience to

decide so that the audience will detect from all of them at that moment. This movie

asks the audience to worry about Mia and her brother's safety because this stranger

could be dangerous. Then turn around, the movie asks the audience to be more

sympathetic to the stranger. After the audience starts supporting this character -

and think, "know person guys are nosy." The actress has given a warning not to

make fun of people who have psychiatric problems—the only consistent

parallelism on both side children and Grace. The Lodge shows is that they are

equally afraid of losing connection to things they loved one. Mia is too close to the

doll. Grace needs medicine to believe she has recovered. Terror comes from within

each party. It makes them afraid and does not believe in things outside. It is this

fear that hinders the growth of love between them. The conclusion is correct,

ironic. In the movie, the writer viewed from both angles; the story of this movie is

insulting. It is a warning story for children. This movie fails because it does not

provide an opportunity for his child to see people from the other side. The second

half of the film is entirely from Grace's point of view. The audience made to

understand not the two children. They do not study. From their perspective, they

are only sorry that Grace is 'raging.' There are some events outside their plan. It is

a psychological story of someone who experienced a nasty incident in the past, so

50

mentally disturbed. The movie also failed because the person made lost in the fight.

This movie also tells the audience that people with mental disorders is indeed

dangerous. Even small children can trick to 'destroy' them because the movie

makes me feel cramped, even though the perspective is more than one. There is a

matter of views about suicide. There is a matter of ritual or religious practice. There

is a matter of relationship with parents. There is a matter of mental state, too, but

the movie makes the audience frustrated. It is trinkets. The audience may expect

too much ambiguity from the present, only to find answers that are very simple

from the most specific topics available in the movie. The movie asks the audience

to overlay everything that does not make sense of the actions shown. Even though

there are many visuals with a horrifying atmosphere, the favorite shot is just right

towards the end; Grace sits with a spectrum of light behind her head, so she is like

a savior) the weirdest and shuddering things in this movie are their choices, like

replacing- change the point of view.

The writer would like to investigate the verbal and visual signs in the movie

poster. The first verbal sign is "SCARY AS HELL. THE NEXT GREAT

HORROR FILM IS HERE." This word that the sentences inform this good horror

movie watched by the audiences. The second verbal sign is "slash film," reflecting

that the name is a type of movie blog in the movie industry. The third verbal sign

is "THE LODGE," which means that this word is the title in this movie poster. The

fourth verbal sign is "YOU'RE NOT WELCOME HERE," which means that the

words say no one comes to their home. The fifth verbal sign is "HAMMER," which

implies company production in this movie. The poster has a black background, this
51

movie's title is written in white, symbolizing a dagger hanging from a leaf branch

red color.

In ‘The Lodge,’ the writer implies that the horror movie might be

recommended to watch as the reference. This poster shows the epic poster in the

movie, especially the face of expression and the tagline’s meaning. In the horror

movie poster, the writer explores the meaning of the text and the poster itself. The

dominants color in the poster is the white and black background.

4.1.4 Analysis of denotative, connotative, and myth meaning of “Demon

The writer would like to analyze denotation, connotation, and myth

meanings in 'Demon Eye' poster. There are several signs in the poster, including

expression, text, and images. It is the sign that can express the denotative meaning

in this table. There are some signifiers and signified in the movie poster. In the

section, the writer mentions the parts of them. The signifiers are ‘the tittle written

In the table, the writer shows the denotative meaning in this section. The

which is the real meaning in words, explaining the denotative meanings based on

the movie poster. The writer implies the sign has denotative implications. Four

Table IV: Sign and The Denotative meaning of “Demon Eye”

The demon eye is a horror movie poster denotative meaning. It would be

the next explanation in the connotative and myths meanings. It needs to deepen the

description of the horror movie poster.

4.1.4.2 Connotative meanings

In the connotative meanings, five names of actors who play in this movie

have related to others. The face of a demon eye consists of a yellow color, a strange

creature, red tears, and a look full of burns. A person who has a lot of energy or

something causes a person to have a lot of trouble or unhappiness. Red color has

the meaning to make a scary impression on the audience. Based on

(Wierzbicka:1996, p.314) stated that red represents blood, danger, and passion.

The red round and form grey color mean the competition has to tell a shape that
54

the meaning of red is strength, courage, primitive, attractive, danger, sin, sacrifice,

vitality. The grey rectangle means as a symbol of the spiritual sign in the horror

movie. A rectangle is a form of Kris. In USA culture, the demon eye has significant

power of the horror. A demon is a person who has a lot of energy or enthusiasm or

something that causes a person to have a lot of trouble or unhappiness. A person

who does something with great enthusiasm and skill-based in this context is called

a demon who has a spirit or a person or thing. The color of demon eyes is black,

red, yellow, or white eyes, depending on the demon involved. Demons themselves,

and people close to the Gates of Hell, see the "real" decaying faces of monsters,

not the body they use to walk the earth. It appears that angels can as well. The

black explores the situation and shows the mysterious creatures whose power in

the evil world. The red describes blood in the movie, including assassination, cruel

murderer, and another murder (Wierzbicka:1996, p. 314). The yellow represents

that yellow is a color that can lift one's mood (Wierzbicka:1996, p.314). This color

has a colorful nature that helps the audience feel positive and optimistic. The

yellow color balances the audience’s mind and keeps the audience’s spirit more

cheerful throughout the day. The white color in the movie represents simplicity,

purity, innocence, and perfection. Someone has to identify a brand that uses white

to convey the model's brand message, white represents its simplicity in form and

function (Wierzbicka:1996, p. 301). White also comes with an absolute or sterile,

often used by designers to convey a minimalist aesthetic and clean, modern quality.

4.1.4.3 Myth Meanings

55

The fact is that a demon is a supernatural human portrayed as an evil. It has

several meanings based on categorizing. The Demon eye may be a mystical creature

that is an evil spirit. Demons described as summoned by someone and either dent

to do works of evil or create chaos. "To demonize" means to make someone appear

evil. The audience may be enjoyed watching this movie, with great scares,

ambitious effects, and a good-paced story. It is a low budget (and that should not

be a surprise if the audience has watched the trailer), but the writer loved how that

did not hold the movie back. It is a great watch, and the writer would recommend

if the audience loves a low budget horror. Based in United States, America, the

actress who plays the demon eye is not bad in real life. The eyes are a window that

is truly from within the Soul. Whether the audience likes it or not, the audience is

also influenced by eyes that radiate rejection, ridicule, or hatred. This one eye

symbolizes an evil eye or a demon eye, how popular and prevalent the evil eye

becomes a symbolic image in the most different cultures. The devil's eyes' symbols

and superstitions are among the most potent representational pictures in the world.

However, the difference in cultures is that they hold the myth of the evil eye. It

mostly has the same meaning, no matter where the story originates. It is the most

basic form; the evil eye sees it as a display given to cause harm, suffering, or some

way of bad luck to humans. The devil's eye can illustrate a terrible disaster for

humans. The earliest evidence of the demonic look knows in ancient Greek and

Roman culture. It believes that the evil eye is the biggest threat to anyone who has

received too much praise or received excessive admiration. People who get

recognition will be so proud of pride, and he is unaware that this will bring his
56

destruction, which beliefs to be capable of causing physical and mental illness. The

evil eye causes every disease. People assume that the gods and goddesses punish

them for being too proud of their achievements and destroying them with his evil

eye's power to restore them to the human level. It is the belief in the eyes of the

devil that is widespread on every continent. In the movie, some perceptions about

the vision of evil in the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and Middle America are all

afraid of the evil eye. In first Classical Greece and ancient Rome, excessive praise

will bring harmful effects to the devil's eyes. In the second, India suggests the evil

eye is a powerful superstition. The third Indian Hinduism teaches that the look is

the most vital point where the body can spend energy.

Thus, the healthy fear of the "evil" look of the eye accepts in a sense, and

the evil eye holds enormous power. That fear believes the eyes can bring bad luck,

so the milk supply from cows dries up. In Indian, Hindus will offer a bowl of milk

to counter the devil's eyes' threat. Other Indian Hindus believe that jealousy is the

root of the evil eye's power, either in a dangerous form or in awe. The last

perception of Indian Hinduism teaches that a time of change in life, like in puberty,

marriage, or giving birth to one of the most vulnerable to threats from the devil's

eyes. The Indian Hindus believe that even animals like snakes can give one evil

eye. Indian Hindus believe that, although men can choose the evil eye, women are

the primary source.

For this reason, South Indian women will paint their eyelids black to protect

themselves from evil eyes. In South America, Brazil holds the same superstition.

In Europe, the dishonest eye myth also comes from the idea that envy's appearance
57

will be dangerous. It has the power to bring bad luck. The most significant source

of evil eyes is believed to be a witch. The first suggestion, Germany is afraid of

people with red eyes. In Ireland, people with slanted eyes feared to be evil eye

magicians. In Italy, the unibrow is another sign of Satan's eyes. The fear of Satan's

eyes does not carry over to America, except in the form of metaphors. This

superstition is not strong enough to take precautionary measures. The evil eyes

deem impolite and warnings that the source of evil eyes has bad intentions.

The writer would like to mention and explain the verbal and visual signs.

The first verbal sign is "DARREN DAY, KATE JAMES, LIAM FOX, ELLIE

GOFFE, ROBERT HAMILTON," which means this name plays in the movie. The

second verbal sign is "DEMON EYE," which means the title in this movie poster

that the story related to the devil's eye. The third verbal sign is "CAREFUL WHAT

YOU WISH FOR," which means that the tagline reminded the audience about wish

what the audience wants. The visual indication, such as color, is black dominance

in the movie poster's background, red color, and gray color. The tagline is white.

At the bottom of the slogan is the name of part crew movie production start from

producers until the director of the movie production.

In ‘Demon Eye.’ the writer implies that this poster has four signs. The signs

include colors, the face of the demon eye, and the meaning of the text. The

dominant color is red. In the ‘Demon Eye,’ the writer might explore the text’s

meaning, especially related to the cultures especially the United Kingdom.

4.1.5 Analysis of denotative, connotative, and myth meaning of “the Curse

of La Llorona” movie poster

58

The movie tells the audience about Anna Tate-Garcia, who works as a social

worker. Often faces child abuse committed by parents. Anna confronts Patricia

Alvarez. The woman who hides her two children, Carlos and Tomas, in a closet. To

avoid violence that further endangers the condition of the child. Anna also rescued

the two children and asked for Patricia to processed. Unfortunately, what Anna did

instead make him a target of terror from the female ghost figure of La Llorona. La

Llorona itself is a ghost who lived in the 17th century. As a result of the revenge

and hurt he had, La Llorona chose to end the lives of his two children and himself.

Feelings of regret and an unorthodox method of death. Finally made this white-

dressed ghost figure always targets children to erase their guilt. Anna cannot stay

silent. She has two children, Chris and Samantha, who are currently being targeted

by La Llorona. In various ways, Anna tries to save her baby from the evil terror of

La Llorona, who always followed them. Pastor Perez was helped, Anna. Anna also

realizes things. It helps her was faith in God and the support of psychics. She

believed in the presence of the figure of La Llorona. In 1973, Anna Garcia, the

single mother woman who worked as a social worker. She lived together with her

two children. Since her husband's death, she has difficulty caring for children,

especially with her work. One day, Anna called in to take care of a case where a

mother confined her two children. Anna is frustrated with this case, especially when

she finds out that two children. She wants to help her mother found dead in the

river. Since then, Anna felt that her life was uneasy. She has something in common

with what her family was experiencing. There is a supernatural event that haunts

his family. Anna also realized that all this was La Llorona's behavior. It began to
59

her and wanted to bring her children to the afterlife. Anna asks for the help of 'smart

people.'

Table V: Sign and The Denotative meaning of “The Curse of La Llorona”

In the 'Curse of La Llorona' movie poster, there are some denotative

meanings, including the orange background, three people looking forward, the

woman reflection, the curse of la Llorona, and the tagline in the movie. It would be

the next explanation in the connotative and myths meaning. It needs to deepen the

description of the movie poster.

4.1.5.2 Connotative meanings

The writer would like to investigate the semiotic sign. It is including

denotative, connotative, and myth meanings in this movie poster. Firstly, the orange

background has a significant value in connotative meaning (Wierzbicka:1996, p.

61

298). The color is screams, happiness, and energy associated with joy and sunshine.

Orange represents creativity, determination, attraction, success, and

encouragement. There is some meaning for the orange background. The orange

background represents power in the poster that shows a unique and knowledge of

importance. It symbolizes that color represents an existing condition, including sad,

feel blue, and other situations (Wierzbicka:1996, p. 294). In the movie, there is the

scene that the course of la Llorona gets two children from their mom. The curse of

la Llorona does not think what mom's feeling to her children. In the scene, the writer

implies the sense of mom bound by her son and girl. The second, three people

looking forward, has significance in this context. It can see by people who are

looking forward to the future. Looking forward means a feeling consisting of a

surface, expect and yearn. As a connotative meaning, looking forward implies

someone who has a plan to associated with two children. Based on the scene that

La Llorona wants to gain the children from the mother. As a form of someone who

has a power relationship with others. In the context, the scene classifies as useful in

making the audience jump from the cinema seats. Moreover, there was a music

allowance from Joseph. In the end, the writer ended up sinking into a granary of

disappointment. They found The Curse of La Llorona ended up as a generic horror

dish. It depended too much on the appearance unnecessary with blunt music

accompaniment to cause a sense of horror. The third, the woman reflection as a

strange creature. The woman represents a human who makes people angry. The

Llorona pass by people but a woman who makes two children a victim. In the

context meaning, two children did not have power against the curse of la Llorona.
62

Based on the scene, the trick of showing ghosts with faded mascara was indeed a

test of courage for an audience that could easily catch like me. However, when

Chaves repeated it repeatedly with not many different approaches, some launching

the trailer. The writer slowly but surely started to become immune. The fear that

has appeared suddenly turned into resentment because of Rona's fury. It is too sissy

to appear. Given that nicknames the weeping woman, the writer hopes Chaves will

further exploit the sound of her crying that appears out of nowhere to create a creepy

nuance that makes the neck's hairs turn on. Unfortunately, that was not the director's

step, and he prefers to recycle the scare tricks from the first act to apply to the

following acts. Presenting La Llorona’s figure, who has a sad past as a villain and

brings out a hero character with a description of a single mother who is willing to

do anything to save her children, the writer thought that the curse of la Llorona

would appear emotional. It is stirring emotions, including exploring the conflict

between the two women across centuries and the world. Chaves and the two

scriptwriters only used it as decoration so that the movie did not seem empty. The

director develops storytelling to create a connection between the audience and the

characters. The fourth, the words "the curse of la Llorona," means people condemn

la Llorona. In Indonesian cultures, it has a meaning that someone who lost her girl

and son in life. In reality, the curse of la Llorona has the power of getting someone's

child. Based on this context that there is a uniformity of situations in the dark poster

and night. Night has a general meaning as the time when spirits can appear. Thus,

the night interprets as a time that is identical to the devil or ghost. In this case, the

night is an index for the horror or the ghost world. The night connected with
63

'gloominess' (Budiman:2005, p. 66). Based on this movie's context, the curse of la

Llorona cries after killing her children. La Llorona haunts children and parents to

take it as a substitute for their children who have died. This movie is rich in cultural

references and the cultural history of Latin America. The story of La Llorona told

by the priest to Anna and the cross of the firewood that Rafael used to defeat La

Llorona. The impression of folklore displayed by La Llorona is quite strong in this

film. In Mexican Legend, father Perez explained, La Llorona has initially been a

beautiful girl named Maria, who was edited by a rich man. They may live happily

with two children. However, happiness is only the age of corn because the husband

cheated. As a form of revenge, Maria killed her two children by drowning them in

a river. Two words consonant is life needs a word of consonants, including the sign,

means as a leg, the girl, and the boy who does not know about the tragedy. In this

context, the tragedy sign that the scene describes someone's feeling to believe that

the curse of la Llorona reality story. The curse of La Llorona represents a bad

woman and how a woman ought not to behave towards their children. The

relationship between La Llorona and two children makes someone strange with

unusual behavior. The boy lying on the water, means someone who believes that

life can make someone woes. The boy represents a hero in life that has the power

to help their mother. This scene sees in the movie that the mother needs to protect

their son. It is the statement that life is strong when someone who helps their mother

in real life. Someone's feeling in this scene has meaning discomfort in their mother.

In this context, the message taught by La Llorona is that no matter what sacrifice a

woman must make, there is no great sacrifice for your children if the readers are a
64

good mother. In this context, the Llorona has a grudge against Anna Tate-Garcia.

In 1973, this film focuses on the family of Anna Tate-Garcia (Linda Cardellini), a

social worker and widow of 2 children, who are still trying to balance the two roles

after the death of her husband. Anna often does not focus on her work. It has several

cases that should be handled by her than have to change hands to other people. One

case is quite strange where Anna does not want to let it go to other people, and she

is determined to solve it immediately. Patricia Alvarez (Patricia Velasquez) is a

widow of 2 children who accuse of molesting her two children. Patricia's two

children locked in a cupboard during the investigation, Anna finally had to help

Patricia's two children and was forced to separate them from their mother

temporarily. Moreover, it turned out that Anna did not save Patricia's children.

There is a great supernatural power that turns out to roam still terrorizing Patricia's

children. Even not only for Patricia's children, but this great power also terrorized

Anna's children, who turned out to be not humans. The terror then always begins

with the sound of a woman's painful crying, which legend calls it La Llorona. The

fifth, the movie’s tagline is a short text that describes our business as a whole.

Besides that, an attractive tagline will make it easier for consumers to remember

and differentiate our business. Eric Schwartz (2019) defines a tagline as an

abbreviated wording (usually no more than seven words and placed alongside a

logo and containing a strong brand message aimed at a specific target audience). In

the poster, the tagline shows the words' she wants your children' by the context that

the la Llorona desire two children, namely Samantha and Chris Garcia. One thing's

for sure, The Curse of the Weeping Woman has a much better jump scare than the
65

last spin-off movie in The Conjuring universe, The Nun. Michael Chaves was quite

successful in showing his skill in concocting horror as he did in the short film "The

Maiden." The execution seems simple, but it is entirely trustworthy and effective in

playing out the horror. The speculative and even shaky camera movements in some

scenes also made him quite successful in building a natural sense of horror. Thus,

when the jump scare element is included in the scene, the audience focuses on

camera movement, making the heartbeat. It is quite useful in giving the maximum

additional shock effect. The Curse of the Weeping Woman shows scenes that the

score removes. It is leaving a silent scene. It only footsteps or terrifying sound

effects 'accompany' the scene. The movie makes the horror atmosphere even more

potent because it does not solely rely on jump scare scenes and appearances. It also

through the setting of the place and the creepy atmosphere that built quite

effectively. In the movie debut feature, Michael Chavez managed to show his skill

in concocting horror dishes. It is effective with a jump scare technique that's

relatively fresh compared to other movies in The Conjuring universe.

4.1.5.3 Myth Meanings

The writer would like to investigate the myth meaning in this movie poster.

This poster represents a full description of the movie. The movie would be said that

the definition of the condition. This condition makes people describe the problem

or something in which explanation about the chronologically this movie. This

movie shows a horror movie based on Latin American folklore. This movie was

produced by James Wan, who previously also participated in the Insidious series,

The Conjuring series, Annabelle to The Nun. The Curse of La Llorona also takes
66

place in the 1970s. Tony Amendola, who plays the pastor of Annabelle's movie,

also plays a role in the film. It indicates a connection between the film. The movie's

outline tells about Anna Garcia, a single parent, who must handle a case that leads

to a series of supernatural stories related to La Llorona.

Based on Latin American folklore about The Weeping Woman. During his

life, La Llorona drowned his children due to being blinded by anger, jealousy. He

drowned himself. Trapped between heaven and hell, La Llorona now follows

children in the middle of the night. It becomes a demon that cursed humans. It turns

out the film. Based on a Mexican folk story of the same name. Michael himself

directed the horror movie. It takes the tagline, "She wants your children," or he

wants your children. According to Mexican culture, the story centers on a poor

beautiful woman. He fell in love and married a rich man, but ashamed of the poor

wife's background, the man left her and their children. As a form of revenge, the

woman threw her children into the river, drowning them. After that, the woman

plunged into the river, hoping to die. He condemns to wander between heaven and

hell, looking for his children. In case he finds them, he can continue his spiritual

journey. This story used to frighten children, so they don't wander off into the night.

Anyone who hears the voice calls La Llorona at night is said to be cursed. People

saw Maria wearing white clothes around the river and lamenting her missing

children because she never found them.

The writer would like to explain verbal and visual signs in this movie poster.

The first verbal sign is "FROM THE PRODUCERS OF THE CONJURING

UNIVERSE," which means the producers' sentences between the conjuring and the
67

curse of la Llorona same producers. The meaning of "THE PRODUCERS" means

that someone who produced the movie. In American media franchise and universe-

sharing, the purpose of "THE CONJURING UNIVERSE" is centered on a series of

a supernatural horror movie, produced film by New Line Cinema, The Safran

Company, and Atomic Monster Productions and distributed by Warner Bros

Pictures. The story and the plot almost relate to the previous movie, entitle "the

conjuring." The second verbal sign is "SHE WANTS YOUR CHILDREN," which

means the story explains that la Llorona wants their children. The word "SHE" that

someone or character who wants the main character's children. The third verbal sign

is "THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA," which means this word is the movie title.

The fourth verbal sign is "COMING SOON," which means the movie release as

soon as possible. The fifth verbal sign is "ONLY IN THEATERS," which means

the audiences can watch the film just in the current place that point by the movie

production. The word "THEATERS," means that the audiences can watch the

movie. The first visual sign of the curse of La Llorona is the black, gray, and white

background, the branch of the tree, seawater in front of them.

In ‘The Curse of La Llorona,’ the writer implies the posters has some verbal

sign and visual signs. The verbal sign, including text, identifies the meaning of the

text; textual analysis and non-textual analysis. Then, the visual sign is the picture

of the poster. These horror movie posters might be recommended to watch. It is not

only related to the culture but also the psychological aspect and social relationship.
