Student Name: ____________________________________________ Section: __________

Module No.: 5 Topic: A Lesson No.: 2-3 The Concept of Function Date: May 22, 2023
Focus Standards for Mathematical Practice MP.2, MP.6, MP.8 Focus Standard(s): 8.F.A.1/8.F.A.2/8.F.A.3
Learning In this worksheet, students will be able to:
Objective(s) - refine their understanding of the definition of a function.
- Identify a set of ordered pairs or table of values as function or not.
- recognize that some, but not all, functions can be described by an equation between two variables.
Part 1: BUILDING MATH FLUENCY
Directions: Perform the indicated operations on integers.

Part 2: IDENTIFYING FUNCTIONS

Directions: Identify each set of ordered pairs as a FUNCTION or NOT A FUNCTION.

Important Note: A set of ordered pairs is considered as a FUNCTION is the inputs or the x-values are
unique (meaning no value is being repeated). For example,

{ (1, 3), (4, 6), (7, -1), (9, 5)} is a FUNCTION. Observe that the inputs or the x-values are not being
repeated, the x-values are 1, 4, 7, and 9. Each value corresponds to a unique output, or y-value.

On the next page, you will be identifying the given table of values as functions or not. Same ruling
applies – that the inputs or x-values in the x-column are unique (that means each value corresponds
to a unique output of y-value.

Directions: Based ONLY on the information presented, determine if the table describes a FUNCTION or
NOT A FUNCTION. In the table x represents the input and y represents the output. Write your answer on
the ANSWER COLUMN.
