CATHODIC DISBONDMENT
Objective:
The ability of coating to resist loss of adhesion under an applied voltage at ambient
temperature is evaluated.
Method:
This test provides accelerated conditions for loosening of coating. Coated reinforcing
bar (with 3mm ᶲ intentional coated defect) acts as cathode and platinum wire acts as
anode. Calomel electrode is used as reference electrode.
These are placed in 3% NaCl solution and potential of – 1.5 V measured against the
calomel electrode is applied.
Duration:
Test is conducted for 168 hours (approx. 7 days).
Result:
The average coating disbondment radius should not exceed 4 mm when measured
from the edge of intentional coating defect.
