Kinetic Property:
When sol is examined with an ultramicrosope, the suspended particles are seen as shining specks of light.
By following an individual particle, it is observed that the particle is undergoing a constant rapid motion. It
moves in a series short straight line paths in the medium, changing direction abruptly.

1) Brownian Motion
The continuous rapid zig-zag chaotic random and ceaseless movement executed by a colloidal
particle in the dispersion medium is called brownian movement. This is due to the unbalanced
bombardment of the particles by the molecules of the dispersion medium.

2) Sedimentation:
Sedimentation is the process of allowing particles in suspension in water to settle out of the
suspension under the effect of gravity. The particles that settle out from the suspension become
sediment, and in water treatment is known as sludge.

3) Osmotic Pressure:
Osmosis, the spontaneous passage or diffusion of water or other solvents through a semipermeable
membrane (one that blocks the passage of dissolved substances—i.e., solutes). The process,
important in biology, was first thoroughly studied in 1877 by a German plant physiologist, Wilhelm
Pfeffer. Earlier workers had made less accurate studies of leaky membranes (e.g., animal bladders)
and the passage through them in opposite directions of water and escaping substances.
4) Diffusion:
Diffusion, process resulting from random motion of molecules by which there is a net flow of matter
from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration. A familiar example is the
perfume of a flower that quickly permeates the still air of a room.

5) Viscosity:
Viscosity, resistance of a fluid (liquid or gas) to a change in shape, or movement of neighbouring
portions relative to one another.
