A tale of Two Cities: Birth Charts for Wellington and Auckland

by Graham Ibell

Part 2
Concluding this two part tale1, Graham discusses the birth charts of Auckland, including a
newly-prosed one and another for its recent Super City status.

Aucklandʼs Foundation Chart

With the recent establishment of an Auckland ʻSuper-Cityʼ this is a fascinating time to be
discussing the astrology of New Zealandʼs largest city. Certainly the chart that this new
phase in Aucklandʼs evolution brings is significant, and will be discussed, but I will start with
Aucklandʼs more primary and better-known horoscope, that based on its founding in 1840.

In 1839 Captain William Hobson, the recently appointed Lieutenant-Governor of New

Zealand, was sent out to New Zealand to direct the purchase of land. Arriving on the 29th
January 1940 in Russell (now celebrated as Aucklandʼs Anniversary Day), he immediately
began drafting the Treaty of Waitangi. After gathering Treaty signatures from around the Bay
of Islands, he spent time looking for sites for a suitable capital city on the Waitemata
Harbour. On arriving there on the 21st February 1840 he immediately found the area ideal.
And so, hastened by a counter-claim by Wellington, he declared the new capital would be
built there. He named the place Auckland, after George Eden, the first Earl of Auckland 2.

When the land had been

purchased, Hobsonʼs appointed
officials arrived in the harbour
around noon on the 15th
September 1840, three days
after the arrival of the Platina, a
ship carrying the town-to-beʼs
An early view of Auckland, showing the area now home to the CBD. first colonists. A foundation
ceremony for the new town was
held on Friday the 18th
September, as reported in a Kororareka (Russell) newspaper a few days later:

“The Barque ʻAnna Watsonʼ, having on board several Officers of the Government,
mechanics, labourers, &c., anchored in the Harbour of Waitemata, on Tuesday the 15th
instant, and the site for the intended Settlement on its shores having been selected by
the Surveyor General, - on Friday the 18th September, at 1 P.M., the ceremony of taking
formal possession in the name of Her Majesty, was duly performed. The whole party
having landed, the British Flag was hoisted on a staff, erected on a bold promontory,
commanding a view of the entire Harbour…”3

# 1/10
This was followed by a three race regatta, thus concluding “the ceremony of founding the
first British Settlement established … in this part of New Zealand: a ceremony the more
interesting, as this Settlement is intended for the future Capital of, what we may venture to
predict, will, one day, become a mighty Empire.”

So it is this day, the 18th September, that is generally regarded as the birth date of Auckland
by astrologers4 .

With the fairly widespread use of chronometers by 1840 “1 PM” would refer to local mean
time (LMT). Although the website ʻAstrothemeʼ states its birth time as being 12:30 pm I see
no reason why 1:00 pm LMT shouldnʼt be used. Moreover, this time proves itself in key
events in Aucklandʼs history 5. Thus the principal chart I will be discussing is this one: 1:00
pm LMT on 18th September 1840 in central Auckland.

of significant challenge,
instability and change, giving the city a chance to prove itself and grow. We can see clear
signs and results of this as Saturn and Uranus have transited through mid- to late-mutables
(Virgo and Pisces respectively) over 2007-10, triggering the grand cross of Moon, Mercury-
Sun, Saturn and Uranus, as Auckland has been ʻsuper-citiedʼ 6.

Or when the Mars-Jupiter-Neptune T-square was triggered by hard aspects from transiting
Pluto during the two Commonwealth Games hosted in Auckland: in February 1950 (Pluto at
# 2/10
17ºLeo) and in January 1990 (Pluto at 17ºScorpio). Auckland rose to the challenge to know
and develop her prowess and strength (Mars in Leo) through inclusiveness (Neptune in
Aquarius), idealisation of strength (Neptune-Mars) and promoting a global vision of equality
and diversity (Mars-Jupiter-Neptune).

Now letʼs see whether this chart describes something of what we know of Auckland.

Here we have a Sun in Virgo,

Capricorn rising and Moon in
Gemini. This portrays an
essential character of
discipline, self-containment,
independence, pragmatism,
under-statement, and worldly/
material strivings, with a spirit
of curiosity, sociability,
intellectual refinement and
duality. The cardinal angles bring forthrightness, assertion and aspiration.

An angular dignified Venus in Libra suggests grace, refined sensibilities, a fair and diplomatic
governance and public image, highly valued arts and culture, and a strong position of
women in society and leadership.

A dignified Mercury in the 9th house, ruler of the 6th and 9th houses indicates a solid work
force, geared towards the technical, agricultural, crafts, service and manufacturing
industries, and important relationships with the international world through shipping and air
transport7. Yet with Mercury rather trapped, through close aspects to Saturn and Uranus,
these - as well as the Mercury-ruled transport and communication systems - may be typified
by erraticness, rebellion and over-regulation.

Mars in Leo on the 8th house cusp shows the cityʼs confident, if somewhat zealous (square
Jupiter), pursuing of foreign investment. As Mars rules this 4th house thereʼs a link here with
real estate, suggesting the land will be used in trans-national investment deals.

Pluto in Aries at the IC hints at the many volcanoes that Auckland is build upon, with Aries on
the cusp indicating that the land on which the city makes its home should be hilly or
mountain-dominated.

Gaining objective corroboration of the above interpretation is difficult, but there are a few
descriptions of Auckland that might help to confirm aspects of it. Such as the history
prepared by Graham Bush for Auckland City Councilʼs centenary entitled Decently And In
Order (Sun in Virgo, Capricorn rising, Libran Venus and MC). Though financial houses, the
2nd and 8th, are not strong in this chart, Auckland being known as the financial centre of New
Zealand is perhaps a reflection of the strong earth and the 2nd house north node. And for the
ʻCity of Sailsʼ it is nice to see Neptune rising. I also enjoy the Moonʼs Gemini placement8 as a
# 3/10
reflection of the physical two-ness, which one might see as Auckland proper versus the
North Shore, the two harbours, or, from a wider perspective, a socio-economic north/south
divide.

But on balance, I am not entirely convinced that this chart captures the spirit of Auckland.
Baigent et.al. writes in Mundane Astrology that the Sun “can show the way in which (a city)
expresses itself, the myths and images which it projects and the way in which foreigners
view (it).” 9 Would we ever think of Auckland (-ers) as being neat, hard-working, precise and
self-contained? Is the myth of virginal purity and intactness relevant to this city? For a Virgo
city, think Paris10; for a nation think Switzerland 11. The Moon in a cityʼs chart refers
specifically to the people, or the population as a whole. Iʼm not convinced that erudite,
intellectually curious, sophisticated and witty Gemini captures a common theme of the
population of Auckland. Nor do I find Auckland a very Moon-Saturn city - held-in, reserved
and self-controlled.

And I wonder where in this chart is the image of rampant growth that Auckland has
undergone much of its life - there is something of this, perhaps, in the rising Neptune, with its
lack of containment suggesting flow or spread, and possibly in the active expansion
symbolised by the close Moon-Jupiter-Mars configuration, but overall there is more Saturn
than Jupiter in this chart, more constraint than expansiveness.

I have no doubt of the validity of the above chart, of its historic and symbolic relevance, but I
havenʼt found it particularly convincing as a clear picture of Auckland, of who this ʻbeingʼ
actually is and how it functions.

Aucklandʼs ʻArrivalʼ Chart

So I would like to propose another chart worthy of study: that of the time of arrival of Captain
Hobson in New Zealand. Hobson, as discussed above, was sent from England expressly to
find and purchase the land for a capital for the new colony - which was to become Auckland.
I will call this the Arrival chart, to distinguish it from the Foundation chart looked at previously.

Hobsonʼs arrival was on the morning of the 29th January 1840, only eight days before the
signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. This day has been celebrated ever since as Aucklandʼs
anniversary, despite the more ritualised founding being in September, as captured by the
Foundation chart. This is a point of strong significance, as I understand the cultural
observing of an initiative as being at least as important as what may appear more historical
ʻtrueʼ12.

What makes this link intriguing is the fact that every year since 1850 Auckland has
celebrated its anniversary on this day, the 29th January, with a yachting regatta, and thus
commemorating the first regatta at its founding on the 18th September 1840. It is for this
reason, and the fact that it works, that I take this chart seriously, and will now discuss it.

recorded that Hobsonʼs ship arrived “in the morning”; I am using a speculative arrival time

- a city intent on growth (Sun-square-Jupiter, with Sun-Neptune an image of its rather
sprawling style, supported by the Sagittarian Moon);
- a hidden revolutionary spirit (Uranus in the 12th house);
- strong foreign investment (ruler of the 8th house, Venus, in the 9th and in Sagittarius);
- an incredible power to assert itself, nationally and internationally (Pluto rising); and
- an exciting multi-culturalism (Sagittarius/9th house emphasis), though not without its
problems (Saturn in Sagittarius in the 9th); and
- a love-affair with the ocean, as the City of Sails (Sun-Neptune conjunction in airy Aquarius,
and the ruling planet, Mars, in Pisces).

I believe this describes the city well.

Here, too, are a few examples of the Arrival chart at work, showing how some of the most
significant events in the history of Auckland are aptly portrayed through transit or direction.

# 5/10
Many of them involve the angles, which being sensitive to small changes in birth time, help
confirm the 9:40 am arrival time:
1. Auckland lost its capital status slowly from 1862, with parliamentʼs first trial sitting in
Wellington on 7th July 1862. At this time transiting Neptune was at its retrograde station at
3Ari52, closely on the Ascendant and square the MC (status/government). It was another
3 years before parliament finally moved to Wellington, with its first official sitting on 26th
July 1865, when transiting Uranus was at 1Can37, less than 2º shy of the chartʼs IC.
2. Auckland City Council was formed on 24th April 1871, with North Node (true) at 2Cap23 on
the MC, with structuring Saturn at its retrograde station at 9Cap53. At this time Solar Arc
(SA) Jupiter (law) conjuncted Saturn (local government, ruling the 11th house) within 0º19ʼ.
In 1989 the council was radically restructured, with substantial amalgamation of existing
local bodies. At the time, Saturn was at 9Cap19 conjunct Neptune (10Cap4), with Uranus,
at 2Cap27, less than 1º from the chartʼs MC.
3. The University was opened (23rd May 1883) with SA Descendant conjunct Jupiter,
universal significator of Universities.
4. Mars, the chart ruler, in the dual sign of Pisces (the two harbours, the two shores)
progressed to the cusp of the 3rd house (bridges) within 0º25ʼ at the opening of the
Auckland Harbour Bridge, on 30th May 1959.
5. The Queen Street Riot of 7th December 1984 shows Uranus, planet of riots, at 13Sag54,
closely square natal Uranus at 14Pis18 (orb 0º24ʼ).
6. The winning of the Americaʼs Cup yachting race in May 1995 infected Auckland with a
chronic case of ʻcup feverʼ, as the city worked towards hosting the race in January 2000.
This whole period, especially ʻ96-ʼ99, saw transiting Uranus in Aquarius moving across the
Sun-Neptune conjunction (the Sun ruling the chartʼs 5th house of sport), as the population
was gripped in a passionate sporting obsession (transiting Pluto moving directly over the
Sagittarian Moon). The deflation felt after the Cup was lost in Feb/March 2003 is
beautifully symbolised by the transit of Neptune (at 11-12º Aquarius) across this Sun-
Neptune conjunction .
7. The Sky Tower was opened on the 3rd of March 1997.
This tower dwarfs all other buildings in the city and is,
primarily, a casino. This date saw the two sky gods,
Jupiter at 9Aqu14 and Uranus at 6Aqu43, closely conjunct
each other and on the chartʼs Sun - the ruler of the 5th
house of gambling. (The Ura/Jup midpoint, at 7Aqu59,
was within 0º09ʼ of this Sun)
8. The first of four of Aucklandʼs main power cables failed on
20th January 1998 (the other three failing over the
following month, plunging the CBD into darkness for
several weeks), when transiting Uranus was at 8Aqu10,
0º02ʼ from natal Sun (symbolising the CBD as well as
light).

# 6/10
9. Another blackout was experienced on 6th December 2006, when transiting Uranus was at
14Pis42, right on the Uranus return (orb 0º24ʼ) and with transiting Saturn (black) at
8Leo06, 0º02ʼ from an exact opposition to the chartʼs Sun at 8Aqu08 13.
10.The amalgamation of the several different city and district councils into one ʻSuper Cityʼ
on 1st November 2010 saw transiting Pluto at 3º22ʼ Capricorn, within 0º04ʼ of the chartʼs
MC (the cityʼs governance).

Thus you can see how resonant this chart is to past transits and directions. So, I propose
this Arrival chart as an alternative, or additional, chart to the Foundation chart described
above for the City of Auckland.

The Super-City chart

To give due regard to the recent amalgamation of Auckland, previously consisting of
separate cities and districts, into one ʻSuper Cityʼ would take a whole article in itself. But I
include the chart of this significant event for completenessʼ sake, and make a few comments
on it. The chart I am proposing is based on the beginning of the dawn ceremony marking the
new Cityʼs inception: this started, according to a Radio NZ reporter, “just before 6 am” on the
1st November 2010 1415 . So

represented reflects determination and endurance. Moon in Leo shows a confident and
proud, community-oriented (11th house) population, yet individualistic and resistant to
unification (Moon in Leo, opposition Neptune), and potentially easily deceived.

A comparison between this and the two charts above is fascinating, but outside the scope of
this article.

The chart of new mayor, Len Brown18 , shows some strong synastry contacts with this Super
City (SC) chart, including:
- his Sun at 7-8º Libra conjuncts SC Saturn (he is carries the authority for the City);
- his Neptune is directly on the SC Ascendant (encouraging, perhaps, an image of him as
the perfect or popular man for the job); and
- both charts have the Moon in Leo, and they are conjunct, suggesting he has a natural
comfort, familiarity and empathy with the City.

The future for Auckland

To give an adequate exploration of the up-and-coming transits and directions of Aucklandʼs
charts is a whole other study unto itself, but I will close with making a few brief observations:

With Saturn transiting through Foundationʼs 10th house over the next 2-3 years Auckland can
expect a period of difficulties as the teething problems of the recent major local body
restructuring are ironed out. Despite the projected savings, this suggests a tightening of the
belt as significant challenges are faced, possibly involving the law (Libra).

No astrologer can be unaware of the Uranus-Pluto square that has been building over the
past year or two, continuing through into 2018, with its themes of epochal shifts and radical
cultural and structural transformation. There are seven of these squares happening from
2012 to 2015, between 8º-15º Aries/Capricorn. All three charts I have looked at are subject
to this transiting square: the Foundation chart through its relationship with Venus (ruler of the
MC, governance and leadership) and the MC/IC throughout this period, and then Pluto
towards the end; the Arrival chart less so, but initially though proximity to the angles, and
then later to the Mercury-Pluto square; and the Super City chart through Saturn, ruler of the
IC.

Given this consistent IC connection, it is tempting to infer an eruptive force such as an

earthquake or even, as ridiculous as it may sound, volcanic activity (2015-16 sees transiting
Uranus crossing Pluto in the Foundation 4th house), but it may well be a disturbance at a
more sociological level, which profoundly upsets communities. These transits occur
concurrent with, or soon after, the progressed Sun conjuncts progressed Uranus in Pisces
(mid 2014), when we might expect sudden confusion due to forced and abrupt severance or
radical change in direction.

A test of the sensitivity of the Arrival chart is imminent, with transiting Uranus poised to cross
the Ascendant over 2011/12, specifically April (with Mars) and October 2011, and February

# 8/10
2012. This should bring significant disruption, perhaps through fire, instability and innovation.
As this trines the chartʼs Moon, this may be well-received by the people of Auckland, even if
initially shocking.

Conclusion
How might one work with more than one chart for the city? For a start, I would encourage
further testing and analysis; perhaps seeing them in action will show one as more significant
than the other. The Arrival chart also requires historic confirmation and possibly further
rectification. But I have no issue with more than one chart describing a single entity -
something which arises more often in mundane than natal work19 .

Although such a distinction is not entirely accurate, it might be useful see these charts as
representing different facets of Auckland City: the Foundation chart may carry something of
the purposeful, pioneering element of the city, so is perhaps more likely to reflect the cityʼs
historical background and physical, structural nature; the Arrival chart, given it represents
that which the people of Auckland celebrate annually, may capture something more of the
deeper spirit of the place and the people; while the Super City chart brings the latest
incarnation of governance and organisation20 . Though I feel strongly that all the above charts
can claim a right to be a chart for Auckland, I am currently most impressed by the Arrival
chart, by its capacity to describe it most sensitively, and reflect, with accurate and
appropriate symbolism and often tight orbs, the cityʼs major historic events.

There is so much more that could be gleaned from these charts: their natal placements,
inter-chart synastry, synastry with the key New Zealand charts, in-depth predictive work
using transits and directions, astro-cartography and more. I look forward to further research.

5 The following progressions and transits involving the angles may help to justify my loyalty to a 1:00pm LMT
ʻbirthʼ:
1.Auckland University opened as Auckland University College on 23rd May 1883. Secondary Progressed
(SP) MC conjuncts SP Jupiter within 0º41ʼ (separating)
2.Auckland Harbour Bridge was opened on 30th May 1959: SP MC conjunct natal Neptune in Aquarius,
exact (0º00ʼ), an apt symbol of the unifying consequence of the bridge, given both Neptuneʼs universal
association with the notion of unification, and specific association as ruler of the chartʼs third house of
bridges.
3.A small pox epidemic from May 1913 to April 1914 concurred with Neptuneʼs transit (24º-28º Cancer)
over the Descendant, Neptune being linked with contagious epidemics.
4.The Americaʼs Cup (yachting) was won on 13/5/1995, when SP MC was conjunct SP Uranus in Pisces
(orb 0ʼ23ʼ, applying): sudden (Uranus) attainment of yachting (Pisces) ambitions (MC) bring worldly
acclaim (MC).

6A Royal Commission on Aucklandʼs Governance was set up in July 2007, the report being released in March
2009 leading to the creation of an amalgamated ʻsuper-cityʼ.
7As if to confirm this chartʼs Mercuryʼs link with air transport, Aucklandʼs International Airport was opened on 1st
January 1966, with transiting Uranus-Pluto at 18º and 19º Virgo respectively, opposite Saturn at 15º Pisces.
8Which, curiously, wasnʼt triggered when this gap was bridged with the opening of the Auckland Harbour
Bridge on 30th May 1959.

13At this time transiting Pluto, also carrying the symbol of ʻblackʼ, was retrograding at 25Sag33 , 0º05ʼ from
natal Venus.
14Legally, the new City of Auckland came into existence at midnight on the morning of the 1st November, but I
have often found that the ceremonial marking of an event represents the more significant ʻbirthʼ moment of an
organisation, as confirmed by how the horoscope ʻworksʼ.
15This chart has fascinating links with a chart for New Zealand I am presently exploring: the signing of the New
Zealand Declaration of Independence on 28th October 1835 at 12:00 noon at Waitangi, Bay of Islands. I hope to
discuss this in a future article.
16 The story of unitary amalgamation has had a long history in Auckland, encouraged by its rapid and nodal
growth (which I link to the Aries rising, Sun-Jupiter signatures and Aquarius Sun in the Arrival chart). A brief
analysis of this reveals the importance of the early Cap/Can MC/IC axis in the Arrival chart: the birth of the
original Auckland City Council had Saturn at 9ºCap and the nodal axis right across the MC/IC; in 1901 the city
experienced its first surge of the ʻgreater Auckland movementʼ, with the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in Capricorn
at the MC and Neptuneʼs transit over its IC; a subsequent surge in 1913-15 saw Pluto and then Saturnʼs transit
across the IC; and then the 1989 local body amalgamation saw Saturn, Uranus and Neptune all conjunct the
MC and Jupiter on the IC . See Graham Bushʼs history of the Auckland City Council, Decently and in Order
(1971) and http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/auckland/introduction/bush/chap2.asp
17 And, in the Arrival chart, as SA IC conjuncts natal Saturn, ruler of the MC (governance), orb 0º15ʼ.
