Tutorial 6: Induction Motor Drives
1) A 3‐phase, Y‐connected, 30 hp, 480 V, 6‐pole, 60 Hz, slip ring motor has stator resistance 0.5 Ω
and a rotor resistance referred to the stator 0.5 Ω. The rotational losses are 500 W and the core
losses are 600 W. Assume that the change in the rotational losses due the change in the motor speed is
minor. The motor load has a constant‐torque.
a) Calculate the developed power by the motor.
b) At full‐load torque, calculate the speed of the motor and the efficiency.
c) Calculate the added resistance to the rotor circuit needed to reduce the speed by 20%.
d) Calculate the motor efficiency with the added resistance.
2) A 3‐phase, 415 V, 4 pole, 50 Hz induction motor has stator resistance 0.5 Ω and a rotor
resistance referred to the stator 0.5 Ω, is driving a constant load of 120 Nm. Ignore the rotational
losses and calculate the motor speed:
a) At full voltage
b) When the voltage is reduced by 20%
3) A 3‐phase, 415 V, 4‐pole, 50 Hz, star‐connected induction motor has the following equivalent circuit
parameters referred to the stator at rated frequency:
0.33 Ω 1.6 Ω 20 Ω
Assume negligible iron losses and a sinusoidal current waveform.
The motor is driven by a variable voltage, variable frequency supply line voltage at 0.033 slip with constant
flux. Calculate the motor stator current ( , the motor rotor current ( and the motor torque:
a) At rated voltage and rated frequency
b) When the frequency is reduced to 25 Hz.
4) A 3‐phase, 415 V, 2‐pole, 60 Hz, Y‐connected induction motor is driving a constant torque load of 50
Nm at a speed of 3500 rpm. The stator resistance and inductive reactance are equal to 0.25 and 4
respectively. The rotor resistance referred to the stator is 0.25 . The load torque is assumed to
include the rotational components.
a) Calculate the motor starting current at the rated frequency.
b) The supply frequency is now decreased to 50 Hz. Calculate the new starting current.
c) The motor is now controlled using constant V/f control.
i. Calculate the new voltage of the supply when the frequency is reduced to 50 Hz under
these operating conditions.
ii. Compare the starting currents of the motor at 60 Hz and at 50 Hz under V/f control.
