Assignment Sheet on Fundamental aspects of Drives
1. A shunt machine connected to 250V mains has an armature resistance (including brushes) of 0.12 ohms, and the
resistance of the field circuit is 100 ohms. Find the ratio of the speed as a generator to the speed as a motor, the line
current in each case being 80A. [1.08]
2. A cumulatively compounded motor is required to start against 140% of full load torque with a starting current of
130% full-load current. Determine the ampere-turns required on shunt field in terms of the total ampere-turns at full
load. Find also the no-load speed of the machine if there is a resistance drop of 12% at full load and 2% at no load.
[35%, 150%]
3. A 240V unsaturated shunt motor has an armature resistance (including brushes and interpoles) of 0.04 ohms and
field resistance of 100 ohms. (a) Find what resistance must be added to the field circuit to increase the speed from 1200
to 1500 rev per min, when the supply current is 200A. (b) With the field resistances as in (a), find the speed when the
supply current is 100A. If the machine is run as a generator to give 200A at 240V find (c) the field current at 1200
r.p.m, (d) the speed when the field current is 2A. [ (a) 25 ohms; (b) 1525 rev per min; (c) 2.56A; (d) 1540 rev per min]
4. A 230 V series motor develops a torque of 296 N-m at 750 r.p.m. The torque loss due to iron and friction loss is
11 N-m. If the efficiency is 87 %, determine the current taken by the motor at 750 r.p.m. [Ans. 111.8 A]
5. Determine the efficiency and the output kilowatts of a three phase 400V induction motor running on load with a
fractional slip of 0.04 and taking a current of 50A at a power factor of 0.86. When running light at 400V, the motor has
an input current of 15 A and the power taken is 2000W, of which 650 W represent the friction , windage and rotor core
loss. The resistance per phase of the stator winding (delta-connected) is 0.5 ohms. (Ans . 0.857 pu, 25.57 kW)
6. A 3phase slip ring induction motor is mechanically coupled to a 3 phase synchronous machine as shown in the figure.
The synchronous machine and IM have respectively 4 poles & 6 poles and both are connected to 3 phase 60 Hz supply
from the stator side. Neglect rotational losses and stator resistance losses. The rotor of the IM is connected to 3 phase
resistive load of 1 p.u. power. The synchronous machine rotates at synchronous speed. a) the rotor rotates in the
direction of stator rotating field in the IM. Determine the speed, frequency of the current in the resistive load and power
taken by the synchronous machine from the source. b) repeat a) if the phase sequence of the stator supply to IM is
reversed.
7. A 3 phase 460 V 250hp 8 pole slip ring induction motor controls the speed of a fan. The torque required for the fan is
proportional to its (speed)2. At full load, the motor slip is 3 % with the slip ring shorted. The slip-torque relationship of
the motor can be assumed to be linear from no load to full load. R2’ is 0.02 per phase. Determine the value of R2 to be
added so that the fan runs at 600rpm at f1=50Hz.
8. A 3-phase, 400 V, 50 Hz, Delta-connected, 1470 rpm, 10 kW induction motor has a full-load efficiency and
power factor of 87% and 0.866 respectively. It takes about 5 times FL current on DOL starting. Calculate (a) its starting
torque during DOL starting. (b) the starting line current and starting torque, if Y-Δ starting is employed, (c) the starting
line current and starting torque, if a transformer with turns ratio of 3:1 is employed to apply reduced voltage to the
motor. (d) If the starting torque is to be 25% of FL torque, calculate the resistance to be included in the 3-lines.
9. A generator supplying 2800 kW at power factor 0.7 lagging is loaded to its full capacity, i.e. its maximum rating
in kVA. If the power factor is raised to unity by means of an over-excited synchronous motor, how much more active
power can generator supply and what must be the power factor of the synchronous motor, assuming that the latter
absorbs all the extra power obtainable from the generator? Sketch the phasor diagram.(1200 kW, 0.3875 lead)
10. A three-phase, star-connected synchronous motor is connected across a 400 V supply. The stator winding has a
synchronous reactance of 0.8 ohms/phase and negligible resistance. If the input power remains constant at 30 kW,
calculate the generated emf per phase when the power factor is (a) unity (b) 0.7 lagging and (c) 0.7 leading. Sketch, for
each case, the phasor diagram showing the phase current and voltages for one phase only. (234 V, 198.5 V, 268.5 V)
