ASSIGNMENT

D.C MACHINE

1) The wave connected armature of 2-pole, 200 V generator has 400 conductor and runes at 300 r.p.m.
Calculate the useful flux per pole. If the number of turns in each field coil is 1200, what is the average
value of emf in each coil on breaking the field if the flux is completely dies away in 0.15 second?

2) A short- shunt d.c compound generator supplies 100V at 200A. The resistances of armature, series and
shunt field windings are 0.04, 0.03 and 60 Ω respectively. Find the emf generated. Also find the emf
generated if the same machine is connected as a long shunt machine.

3) A dc generator is connected to a 220 V mains. The current delivered by generator to the mains is 100A.
the armature resistance is 0.1 Ω. The generator is driven at a speed of 400 r.p.m. Calculate- a) the induced
emf. b) the electromagnetic torque. c) the mechanical power input to the armature neglecting iron, friction
and windage losses. d) the power input and output of armature when the speed drops to 350 r.p.m. state
weather the machine is generating or motoring. Assume constant flux.

4) A 6-pole dc machine has 300 conductors and each conductor is capable of carrying 80 A without
excessive temperature rise the flux per pole is 0.015 Wb and the machine is driven at 1800 rpm. Compute
the total current, emf, power developed in the armature and electromagnetic torque, if the armature
conductors are- a) wave connected b) lap connected.

5) A 240 V dc shunt motor runs on no-load at 800 rpm with no extra resistance in field or armature circuit,
armature current being 2 A. calculate the resistance required in series with the shunt winding so that the
motor may run at 950 rpm when taking a line current of 30 A. Shunt winding resistance is 160 Ω,
armature resistance is 0.4 Ω. Assume flux is proportional to field current.

6) A shunt generator delivers 50 kW at 250 V when running at 400 rpm. The armature and field resistance
0.02Ω and 50 Ω respectively. Calculate the speed of the machine when running as a shunt motor and
taking 50 kW at 250 V. Allow 1 V per brush for contact drop.

7) A 4-pole, 250 V, wave connected shunt motor gives 10 kW when running at 1000 rpm and drawing
armature and field current of 60 A and 1 A respectively. It has 560 conductors. Its armature resistance is
0.2 Ω. Assuming 1 V per brush, determine- a) total torque b) useful torque c) useful flux per pole d)
rotational losses e) efficiency.

8) A 220 V dc series motor is running at a speed of 800 rpm and draws 100 A, calculate at what speed the
motor will run when developing half the torque. Total resistance of the armature and field is 0.1 Ω.
Assume the magnetic circuit is unsaturated.

9) A 500 V shunt motor takes 4 A on no load. The armature resistance including that of brushes is 0.2 Ω
and field current is 1 A. Estimate the output and the efficiency when input current is a) 20 A, b) 100 A.

10) A dc series motor runs at 1000 rpm when taking 20 A at 200 V. The resistance of the armature circuit is
0.5 Ω and that of field winding is 0.2 Ω. Find the speed for a total current of 20 A, 200 V, when a 0.2 Ω
resistor is joined in parallel with the field winding. The flux for field current of 10 A is 70% of that for 20
A.
11) A 250 V compound generator armature, series-field and shunt-field resistance of 0.4 Ω, 0.2Ω and 125Ω
respectively. If the generator supplies 10 kW at rated voltage, find the emf generated in the armature
when the machine is connected a) long shunt b) short shunt. Ignore armature reaction and allow 1V per
brush for contact drop. c) If a diverter of resistance 0.3 Ω is connected in parallel with series –field
winding, find the percentage decrease or increase in series field armature turns.

12) A 220 V shunt motor has an armature circuit resistance of 0.2 Ω and field resistance of 110 Ω at no
load the motor takes 5 A and rune at 1500 rpm. If the motor draws 52 A at rated voltage and rated load
calculate the speed and its rated shaft torque in N-m, the rotational losses at no load and full load are the
same. Neglect armature reaction.

13) A 230 V dc shunt motor has an armature circuit resistance of 0.4 Ω and field resistance of 115 Ω. This
drive a constant torque load and takes an armature current of 20 A at 800 rmp. If motor speed is to be
raised from 800 to 1000 rpm, find the resistance that must be inserted in the shunt field circuit. Assume
magnetization curve to be a straight line.

14) A 10 kW, 250 V dc shunt generator has total no-load rational losses of 400 W. The armature circuit
(including brushes) and shunt field resistance are 0.5 Ω and 250 Ω respectively. Calculate the shaft power
input and efficiency at rated load. Also calculate the maximum efficiency and the corresponding power
output.
