Acid, Base and Salt

Acid:
1. It contains H+ ions (Hydrogen ions).
2. It dissolves in water.
3. It produces H3O+ (Oxonium Ion)
Suppose, HCl(g) is dissolved in HCl to produce Solution A and
dissolved in Toluene (Methyl Benzene) to produce Solution B.
We tested both of them with litmus. In solution A, the litmus
turns red, indicating Acidic. HCl ⇌ H+ + Cl-.
In solution B, there is no change in litmus, So HCl → HCl.
Why is Solution A, acidic?
It is dissolved in water, thus is ionized and produces Oxonium
Ion, H+ + H2O→H3O+
Why is Solution B, not acidic?
It dissolves in water, however is not ionized, and thus remain as
a molecule.
Acid is a chemical substance that dissolves in water, contains
hydrogen ions and produces oxonium ion (H3O+)

HCl→ Dissolves in water and produce Oxonium → Acid

CH4→Does not produce oxonium ion but has H+ ions→ Not Acid

Classification of Acid (According to strength):

There to two types of Acid according to strength,
1. Weak Acid, which is incompletely ionized.
2. Strong Acid, which is completely ionized.
