Phonics Year 1 (a-e, ay, ai, eigh, ey)

The ‘ai’ family

This week we are going to be reading words with the ‘ai’ phoneme. We will be
recapping our knowledge of the ‘ai’ sound and the different ways of writing the
‘ai’ sound. The children should be confident reading words with a-e, ay and ai
diagraphs (snake, stay, rain).

This week the children should learn that sometimes ‘eigh’ in neigh also makes
the ‘ai’ sound and sometimes the diagraph ‘ey’ in grey makes the ‘ai’ sound.

Read the ‘a-e’ words below. Look at the pictures and write each word under
the correct picture. Read the word again to make sure that it is correct.
