Bridge Planning and Engineering Workshop

BACKGROUND TO THE WORKSHOP

Transportation infrastructure is very important for the economic and social development
of any country. Highway Bridges form a major aspect of transportation infrastructure.
The different life phases of highway bridges include the planning and conception,
design, construction, maintenance and repair phases. These phases require various
technical, socio-economic, and sustainability indicators to determine performance goals
for the highway bridges.
Hence, in accordance with Presidential Executive Order No. 5 issued on 2 nd February,
2018, there is a need to bring together different stakeholders from Universities,
Institutes, Contractors, Consultants and Owners of the transportation infrastructure to
discuss and establish a common basis and expertise for the design and maintenance of
highway bridges in Nigeria to ensure effective and sustainable participation of Nigerian
Professionals and Contactors.
This maiden workshop seeks to identify the various processes in highway bridge
development and discuss in detail the Nigerian Highway Design Manual. It also seeks to
go through the structural design, maintenance and inspection of various highway
bridges with the goal of achieving sustainable development in the transportation
infrastructure industry.
The outcome of this workshop is really important, not only for those directly involved in
the transportation infrastructure industry but for social-economic development of
Nigeria.
