Review:

And Then There Were None is a 2015 mystery thriller television serial that was first
broadcast on BBC One from 26 to 28 December 2015. The three-part programme was
adapted by Sarah Phelps and directed by Craig Viveiros and it is based on Agatha
Christie's 1939 novel of the same name. Having more than 6 million viewers, the series
received critical acclaim as regards writing, performances, and cinematography. It also
scored high ratings.

The story is set in England during the 1930s, on a remote island called Soldier Island,
where eight guests and two servants are summoned by a mysterious couple, Mr and Mrs
Owen. However, these hosts never appear. This is relevant because there is a macabre
poem hanging on each bedroom, “Ten Little Soldiers”, which describes in detail ten
deaths until nobody is left.

During their first dinner in the house, a gramophone starts playing a recording of the
sins of each guest and the servants. Apparently, these people are guilty of murder of
different sorts, and now, it seems like they are trapped on the island to pay for them.
Throughout the series, eerie mood increases as the guests are executed one by one,
according to the nursery rhyme, and the survivors try to discover who the murderer is
before it is too late.

Although they deny any wrongdoing at first, they slowly begin confessing their deep
secrets. These dark truths and fear are accurately shown by the director, who used
outstanding visual effects as flashbacks and realistic storm clouds, which symbolize the
violent acts occurring on the island.

The incredible cast talent makes each guest so unique that seeing them interact becomes
a kind of pleasure, and also part of the puzzle. However, the constant sober atmosphere,
supported by shadowy and cloudy backgrounds as well as pastel-coloured clothing,
causes a sense of tedium and monotony among some viewers.

On the whole, And Then There Were None is an incredible psychological portrait of a
group of frightened and confused people trying to survive at all costs, distrusting of
everyone and relying upon one another at the same time. You will also feel that, in the
end, justice was served for those innocent people who could not defend themselves.
