SERVICES TO PAMPER
“When the going gets tough, the tough should get
going, have a hand and foot spa today!”

SHS Beauty Nail Care Services 11/12

Hello, are you aware of how
are you going to pamper your
client's hands and feet? Have
you mastered the services?

I have not mastered it yet, but I can

perform to my client hand and foot spa
procedures. However, there are times that
I'm a little bit nervous because I forget
some steps.

Okay thank you for your honest

feedback, I am always here to guide
you, but you need to memorize the
procedures to avoid confusion. Wait,
what part of the hand and foot spa
procedures are you struggling with?

I am struggling with the procedure of determining

the heat temperature of melted paraffin wax. Some
of my clients are afraid to dip their hands. They
have the thinking that their hands will get burned or
cannot tolerate the heat of melted paraffin wax.
Teacher Jane, what can I do so that my clients will
not be afraid or hesitant to dip their hands in hot
melted wax?

All right, let us look at what we can do to

ensure your client's safety while you carry out
the procedures of hand and foot spa
treatment. Future nail technicians start
reading and understanding the discussions
on "Services to Pamper" so you can learn
more and develop your skills in hand and foot
spa services.

Yes, Teacher Jane. We are going to

start reading the discussions here.
Thank you so much for your desire
that all of us will learn more on this
subject.

4
What is a Spa?
It is a beauty care service where curative mineral is present for personal
beautification. If the spa is applied to the hands and feet, the client can experience
relaxation, pain is relieved and blood circulation is stimulated due to the warm and
enhancing effect of the softening agents. It exfoliates dead skin cells and smoothens
roughness, aiding in the penetration of treatment ingredients in the system.

Your hands take a lot of abuse such as exposure to harsh detergents or

chemicals, to sunlight, and even getting overworked doing many different tasks andodd
jobs, that is why clients go to the salon for some pampering and relaxation through
hand spa treatment. Your feet experience the same thing because you use them for walking,
and you cannot stand without a foot. Your feet are experiencing the same thing as your
hands are. Your foot is also tired so we should just pamper it through a foot s pa.
As a service provider, being successful in giving your client a relaxing hand spa
treatment greatly increases your self-confidence. To be able to achieve quality
service, it is very necessary to follow the correct procedure in performing hand and foot
spa treatment.

As a service provider, being successful in giving your client a relaxing hand spa
treatment greatly increases your self-confidence. To be able to achieve quality
service, it is very necessary to follow the correct procedure in performing hand and foot
spa treatment.

Here are the steps in handling hand and foot spa treatment:

A. Check and analyze the condition of the client’s hands and feet.

Check if there is no Callous

Callous/ calluses are thick, hardened layers of skin that develop when yourskin
tries to protect itself against friction and pressure. They most often develop on the feet
and toes or hands and fingers. Corn occurs on the tops and sides of the toes. A hard
corn is a small patch of thickened, dead skin with a packed center.

5
Check if it is Normal with no cuts or wounds
An open wound on the hand/feet is a cut or break in the skin there. The wound
maybe minor and near the surface of the skin.

Check if it is Dry
Dry hands/feet are typically scaly and rough to the touch, particularly on
the backside of your hands as your natural oils don't typically congregate there.

After considering all this, you can now prepare yourself and your clientfor hand and foot
spa treatment.

B. Wash the client’s hands and feet with lukewarm water and soap and towel dry
before and after scrubbing.

 Client is advised to remove jewelry and accessories.

 Washing hands/feet is one of the most basic ways to minimize the transmission
of germs. Insist that you need to wash the client’s hands/feet before starting the
service.A fresh bowl of warm soapy water should be provided to each client
for the soaking of hands/feet. After a few minutes, rinse the hands/feet then
towel dry before scrubbing.

6
C. Prepare and use necessary tools and supplies/materials according to OHSC
Requirements.

TOOLS

1. Small Basin 2. Low Stool Chair 3. Wooden Foot File

EQUIPMENT

1. Hand Spa Machine 2. Foot Spa Machine

SUPPLIES/MATERIALS:

1. Hand Towel 2. Mittens 3. Transparent Plastic

4. Skin Oil (e.g. Liniment Oil, 5. Lotion 6. Hand Soap

Aromatherapy Oil, Olive Oil)

7. Foot Scrub 8. Foot Blush Spray 9. Foot Soak 10. Cling Wrap 7
D. Apply hand/foot softening product and massage according to the prescribed procedure.

PROCEDURE IN HAND MASSAGE

8
Foot massage is an accessible treatment for tense and aching feet. It
does not only rejuvenate the skin, but it also lessens aching soles and arches.
Furthermore, it increases blood flow and helps a person to relax. This time you
will learn foot massage techniques that are easy to try during your
practicum.

FOOT MASSAGE TECHNIQUES

1. Apply milking strokes. Hold the

foot with both hands. Give ten quick,
fast pulls on one side and then on the
other. Consider milking a cow’s pulling
motion when doing so.
2. Indian rub technique. Keep the side of
the foot with both thumbs positioned in
the middle of the arch. Moving the hands
back and forth as if wringing a wet towel
out. Enable a lot of foot movement when
applying this.
3. Petrissage on the Achilles tendon and
lower foot. Petrissage is an important
massage technique that exerts intense
pressure on the tissue and the
underlying muscles. This technique is
used in the treatment of muscle knots to
free up tissue and muscle movement. It
uses squeezing and lifting to relieve
spasms in the muscles. It increases blood
circulation, breaks down adhesions, and
relaxes the muscles. Using this technique,
slowly work your way down to the lower calf.
The use of petrissage in this area will help relax
the feet further.

9
4. Massage the long muscle of the foot.
The long muscle begins near the
tendon of the Achilles and ends at the
knee and it is closely tied to the foot
muscle movement. Let your client
straighten their leg vertically and use
your forearm to exert downward
pressure on the foot. Shift your arm
slowly so you can use your elbow to
add more pressure to the foot.

5. Perform ankle rotations. Keep the foot

up and use one hand to move the foot
around the ankle. Move the foot ten
times in one direction, and on the
opposite side also ten times. The ankle
joints may flare up but just continue
unless it causes some pain or discomfort
to the client.
E. Determine and test the appropriate temperature for the heat tolerance of the
client.

The following steps are to be followed when testing paraffin wax temperature.
1. Wax must be in an ideal consistency and temperature when it resembles honey and
glides easily over your skin. After heating your wax, test it on the inside of your wrist before
use.
2. Test the wax with your fingertip to make sure it's at the right temperature. If not,
adjust the temperature.
3. The wax should not be uncomfortably hot on your skin.
4. If it feels too hot, leave it cool for a couple of minutes and assess it again on your
wrist.
5. If the wax is not spreading easily and has a stringy texture, it is too cooland will need a
bit more heating time.

F. Soak hands for 4 seconds for 3 consecutive times in wax and wrap with plastic gloves
and mittens.

The pictures below show how to soak hands in wax using different supplies or materials.

10
G. Remove wax from hands according to manufacturer’s instructions.
Remove the wax.
After 15 to 20 minutes, remove your
handfrom the mittens and the plastic bag. Use a
softtissue to remove the waxy residue from your skin.
Remove slowly to prevent injury. When you have
completed your treatment, cover the wax, and
store it in a safe place for yournext treatment

H. Apply hand softening product and massage according to the prescribed

procedure.

Apply a small amount of softening lotion onto the

hands and massage until absorbed.

I. Advise client after service on a maintenance program.

When you have completed the treatment, you should inquire from your client
ifhe/ she is satisfied with your service.

Here is some advice to clients after service:

1. Wash hands regularly and clean
implements thoroughly because the most
exposed part of the body to toxins is the hands
and they should be welltaken care of.
2. Frequent Salon Visit (Twice a Month)
3. 3-5 Times a day application of lotion.

J. AFTER FOOT SPA MASSAGE SERVICES

1. Wash used towels immediately to prevent them from accumulating moisture and
dust.
2. Seal out oil/cream containers and sanitize them before keeping them.
3. Therapists should avoid washing hands with water after rendering foot
massage.
4. Dispose of waste products according to OHSC and Department of Health
requirements.
5. Always sanitize tools and equipment before storing them.
6. Keep the working station clean, sanitized, and organized for the next treatment
activity.

11
