The context for the research study is that; female
learners in Science, Technology, and Mathematics
(STEM) subjects often face challenges that are
specific to their gender. These challenges can include
gender stereotypes, lack of female role models, and
unconscious bias from teachers and peers.
According to data from the Department of Education,
in the Philippines, female students in STEM fields
are underrepresented. In 2019, only 37% of students
who took the National Achievement Test (NAT) in
the STEM strand were female. This suggests that
there may be underlying issues that are preventing
female students from pursuing STEM subjects.
Furthermore, research has shown that female students
who do pursue STEM subjects often face more
challenges than their male counterparts.
The MPNAG, being an educational institution that
offers STEM programs, is a suitable location for your
research. In particular, your research will focus on
Grade 10 female learners in the Research subject,
which is a key component of the STEM curriculum.
The academic year 2022-2023 is a relevant time
period for your research since it aligns with the
current academic year and allows for data collection
over an extended period.
The rationale for the research study; is to identify the
challenges faced by Grade 10 STE female learners in
the Research subject at MPNAG and explore the
coping strategies that they use to overcome these
challenges. This information can be used to develop
interventions and support systems that can help
female learners in STEM subjects succeed.
Additionally, this research can contribute to the
broader conversation on gender equity in STEM
education, which is a critical issue in the Philippines
and around the world.

Based on the goal of assessing the challenges and
coping strategies of Grade 10 STE female learners in
the Research subject at MPNAG, one proposed
intervention is to conduct focus group discussions
with female learners in order to gain a deeper
understanding of their experiences.
Focus group discussions (FGDs) are a qualitative
research method that involves bringing together a
small group of individuals to discuss a particular
topic. FGDs can be a useful tool for understanding
the perspectives and experiences of a particular
group, such as Grade 10 STE female learners.
During the FGDs, participants can be asked a series
of open-ended questions about their experiences in
the Research subject, including the challenges they
have faced, the coping strategies they have used, and
the support systems they have found helpful. The
FGDs can also provide an opportunity for
participants to share their ideas and suggestions for
how MPNAG can better support female learners in
STEM subjects.
Overall, the proposed FGDs can be an effective
intervention for understanding the challenges and
coping strategies of Grade 10 STE female learners in
the Research subject at MPNAG. By gaining a deeper
understanding of their experiences, MPNAG can
develop targeted interventions and support systems
that are tailored to the specific needs of female
learners in STEM subjects.

Plans for Dissemination and Utilization
Since our research focuses on grade 10 STE female
learners at MPNAG, it would be important to share
our findings with the school administration. We can
present our findings to the principal, teachers, and
counselors at MPNAG, and suggest ways to improve
the learning experience for female learners.
