SPEAKER: Engr. Arlon D. Magsino, PEE

TOPIC: The Electrical Engineer as a Power System Engineer in Industrial Manufacturing Plants:

The Key to a Reliable Power Distribution

Figure 1.1 The Electrical Engineer as a Power System Engineer in Industrial

Manufacturing Plants: The Key to a Reliable Power Distribution

The first seminar session was held in the Amphitheater on March 08, 2023. Engr.

Magsino was the first speaker of the session. In his talk, he discusses the potential jobs that an

aspiring power system engineer might have in an industrial manufacturing facility. He also

discusses a skill that a future power system engineer should possess. He also discusses a few

real-world examples of how power system engineers apply their skills in large industries.
A power system engineer ensures that the energy generated by power plants is distributed

to the various users and consumers. Additionally, they offer technical assistance with protective

relaying, guaranteeing the technical network's protection against electrical faults as well as the

security and functionality of the electrical infrastructure. Aspiring power system engineers

should be knowledgeable about arc flash hazard analysis, protection coordination, load flow

analysis, and short-circuit analysis. Additionally, they must be knowledgeable about government

regulations as well as standards like PEC, ANSI/IEEE, and IEC.

Figure 1.2 The Skillset of a PSE

Engr. Magsino also discussed about the switchgear. A switchgear is an apparatus used for

managing, safeguarding, and isolating power systems. Additionally, it automatically interrupts

the power supply and safeguards the electrical system from harm caused by an electrical surge. It

is also used to de-energize equipment for safe testing, maintenance, and fault clearing.
Switchgears provide protection from a variety of hazards, including reverse power, overcurrent,

overloading, overvoltage, undervoltage, synchronization faults, ground faults, and short circuits.

Figure 1.3 Protection Offered by Switchgears

Engr. Magsino also talked about switchgear protection, which is important in modern

power system networks from generation to transmission and distribution. Circuit breakers are

current interrupting devices. The circuit breakers can be operated manually as needed, or they

can be operated automatically in the event of an overcurrent, short circuit, or other fault in the

system by sensing abnormalities in system parameters. Current, voltage, frequency, phase

angle, and other power system parameters are examples. The circuit breaker detects a faulty

condition in the system via protection relays, which are actuated again by a faulty signal, which

is typically generated by a current transformer or voltage transformer.

Figure 1.4 Overload Protection

Last but not least, Engr. Magsino also discussed Overload Protection. An overload

occurs when the motor draws too much current. This may cause the motor to overheat and

damage the windings. As a result, it is critical to protect the motor, motor branch circuit, and

motor branch circuit components from overload conditions. Overload relays protect the

motor, motor branch circuit, and motor branch circuit components from excessive heat caused

by an overload condition. Overload relays are a component of the motor starter (assembly of

contactor plus overload relay). They protect the motor by monitoring the current in the circuit.

If the current exceeds a certain limit over a set period of time, the overload relay trips,

activating an auxiliary contact that interrupts the motor control circuit, de-energizing the

contactor. This results in the motor losing power. Without power, the motor and motor circuit
components do not overheat and become damaged. Overload relays can be reset manually,

and some will reset automatically after a certain period of time. The motor can then be

restarted.

SESSION NUMBER: Fifth

SPEAKER: Engr. Bryan Yves Espiritu

TOPIC: Combined Cycle Process And Power Plant Safety

Figure 2.1 A Brief Discussion About Power Plant

This session will also be help at CEAFA building on 4 th floor which is the Amphitheater.

This meeting was conducted on March 8, 2023. Engr.Espiritu elaborated and give us the concept

of a power plant or sometimes called as power station. The term applies to an industrial facility

that generates anything of societal significance, such as electricity, gas, or drinking water, on a

huge scale in a number of South American nations. Therefore, a power plant is a specific kind of

industry. Power plants can include a steel factory, a hydroelectric power facility, a refinery for

petroleum, and other locations depending on the context. The term "electric generator" is also

used to refer to an industrial site in the field of mining, which is the economic activity of

exploiting or extracting minerals from deposits, soil, and subsoil areas in which they have

accumulated. This device is used to ensure that a potential difference is maintained between two

poles, converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. On the other hand, a lot of people

refer to the room in a rural house where, for instance, the water pump and the light engine are

located as a power plant in common speech. The term "power plant" may also apply to a physical

or symbolic setting that fosters the development of thoughts or other non-material problems. A

political analyst may assert that a particular library is a "Neoliberal power plant" because it

serves as a gathering place for intellectuals who promote neoliberalism.

Figure 2.2 Background of Siemens Power Operations

Engr. Espiritu was currently working within Siemens Power Operations, Inc, that’s why

he provided us brief background and history of the said company. He also discusses on how the

process goes within the company operation. Siemens AG is a German conglomerate company

and the largest industrial manufacturing company in Europe with branch offices abroad. The

principal divisions of the company are Industry, Energy, Healthcare, and Infrastructure & Cities,

which represent the main activities of the company. Siemens established its first recorded

presence in the Philippines in 1894. It operates in the Philippines through the businesses of Smart

Infrastructure, Digital Industries, Mobility, Siemens Healthineers, and Portfolio Companies. In

1992, Siemens, Inc., the regional company, was established to solidify the presence of the

company in the country.

Figure 2.3 Ideal Rankine Cycle

In order to transform the pressure energy of steam into mechanical energy using steam

turbines, power facilities frequently employ the Rankine Cycle. The main parts of the Rankine

Cycle are a revolving steam turbine, a boiler pump, a stationary condenser, and a boiler. A boiler

is used to heat water to produce steam at the pressure and temperature needed by the turbine in

order to generate electricity. If we take a step back and consider what a normal power plant cycle

looks like, this would make more sense. The turbine exhaust is sent to the radial or axial flow

condenser for condensing the steam to condensate and recycling back to the boiler through boiler

pumps for further heating. The session was concluded with a photoshoot of everyone within the

facility.

Figure 3.2 Roles of a Project Manager

Engr. Ramirez focused on the specific roles of a Project Manager. First is assembling this

is where the project manager gather a set of individuals to be the part of the part and identify the

things that will be needed. Second is planning this is where the things identified in the assembly

part will be arranged or synchronized. The project roadmap of the project, project plan, project

scope, project schedule, project constraints, and risk analysis will be build by the project

manager. Third is the budgeting, all the revenues and expenditures will be predicted through this

systematic approach. This role is very crucial for decision making since it is all bout money.

Fourth is the managing day-to-day tasks, a project manager is responsible to check and assess the

progress of the projects as well as its subordinates. Fifth is the execution, all the support is

necessary for the company’s strategy. And lastly is the meeting deadlines, this is achieving the

time frame or the gantt chart that includes all the activities needed to be achieved in a specific

time, day, or month.
