EXERCISE ON TOPIC 13.1 &13.

1. Write sample space, S and event, A, of the following by using set notation. State
the number of elements in the sample space, n(S), and event, n(A).
a) A letter is selected at random from the word H E B A T. A is the event that a
consonant is selected.
S={H,E,B,A,T}
n(S)=5
n(A)=3

b) A month is selected at random from a year. A is the events that a month starts from
letter J is selected.

c) A box contains 10 cards numbered from 6 to 15. A card is selected at random from
the box. A is the event that the number on the card which is selected is a multiple of 3.

n(S)=10
n(A)=4

d) A ball is selected at random from boxes P and Q. A is the event that two balls
labelled with a number is selected.

3 X 5 Y 8

Box P Box Q

S={(3,5),(3,Y),(3,8),(X,5),(X,Y),(X,8)}
A={(3,5),(3,8)}
n(S)=6
n(A)=2

2) A letter is selected at random from the word MATEMATIK. Find the probability
of letter T is selected.

3) A basket contains 6 red apples and 4 green apples. An apple is selected at random
from the basket. Find the probability that a red apple is selected.

4) The table shows the number of pen in a box.

Colour of pen Black Blue Red
Number of pen 8 3 4
A pen is selected at random from the box. Find the probability of selecting
i) a blue pen ii) a red pen

5) The diagram shows a few number card. A card is selected at random. Find the
probability that the number on the card which is selected is
2 3 5 6 8 9 12 16

i) A multiple of 2 ii) a factor of 12

6) Determine whether each of the following events is possible or not.

i) The month of January has 30 days

ii) Both dice that are tossed show the different number.

7) Hendra chooses a number at random from number 27 to 49. Complete the element
of sample space for the event of choosing an prime number in the answer space. Then,
find the probability of this event, P(A).
Answer:
S = { ____, ____, 37, 41, ____, 47, 49}
P(A) =

8) Adam has a total of 80 marbles of red, yellow and green colour. 18 of the marbles
are red marbles. If a marble is chosen at random, the probability of choosing a yellow
3
marble is . Find the number of green marbles.
