2nd Quarter: Lesson 2 December 02, 2022

RELATION AMONG THE

ARCS AND THE
INSCRIBED ANGLES OF
THE CIRCLE
Important Terminology:
Inscribed angle: In a circle, this is an angle formed by two chords with the vertex on the
circle.
Intercepted arc: Corresponding to an angle, this is the portion of the circle that lies in
the interior of the angle together with the endpoints of the arc.

Inscribed Angle Theorem

The Inscribed Angle Theorem states that the measure of an inscribed angle is half
the measure of its intercepted arc.

m∠ADC = ½ mAC

mAC = 2 m∠ADC

Corollary 1 (Congruent Inscribed Angles Theorem)

If two inscribed angles intercepted the same arc, then the angles are congruent.

m∠ADB = m∠ACB
m∠DAC = m∠DBC

Corollary 2 (Semicircle Theorem)

If an inscribed angle of a circle intercepts a semicircle, then the angle is a right
angle.

m∠DAB = 90o

Corollary 3 (Inscribed Quadrilaterals Theorem)

If a quadrilateral is inscribed in a circle, then the opposite angles are supplementary.

m∠DAB + m∠BCD = 180o

m∠ABC + m∠ADC = 180o
