CHAPTER ONE: Introduction

1.1 Background Of The Study

The purpose of modern-day machinery diagnosis is to carry out needs-based maintenance
or repair and to minimise the repair and other servicing downtimes of a machine. The aim is to
detect damage as it occurs. The condition of a machine or of machine components can be
accurately diagnosed from the nature and extent of its vibration. Accordingly, vibrations are
measured, recorded and evaluated using sensors and recording equipment. Correct interpretation
of the measurement signals requires a thorough understanding of the mechanisms at work and a
degree of experience.

Nowadays, the car (Peugeot) diagnosing system is very crucial and significant to any
Peugeot manufacturing companies as specifications are changing rapidly stimulated by
environmental and economic factors. This issue presents a challenge to both the mechanics and
drivers in handling car failures and malfunctions. With the advent of new technologies like the
hybrid engine, there are many changes that need to be learned. In fact, in a normal situation, fault
identification is still a challenging task, especially for the inexperienced mechanics and drivers.
Consequently, the success of finding the fault is extremely dependent on the expertise of the
individual. However, the dependence on the experts can be minimized if the expertise is captured,
documented, and retained in some computer applications.

The Expert Diagnosed System (EDS) is a computer system that emulates the decision-
making ability of a human expert in a restricted domain. The expert diagnosed system one of the
leading Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques that have been adopted to handle such task. The
required AI techniques for such domain have to be capable of emulating the human brain’s
diagnostic processes (Russell and Norvig 2010).

Hence Expert Diagnosed System is one of the well-known reasoning techniques that is utilized in
diagnosis applications domain. In EDS, human knowledge about a particular expertise to
accomplish a particular task is represented as facts and rules in its knowledge base (Salama et al.,
2012).

It seeks and uses the information provided by a user. Reasoning process is then performed over
the represented knowledge using heuristic approaches for a solution (Folorunso et al., 2012).
Application of an expert system for diagnosing damage to Car (Peugeot) has also been carried out
such as (Salama et al., 2012) its failure detection is a sequence of diagnostic processes that
necessitates the deployment of expertise. The Expert Systems (ES) is one of the leading Artificial
Intelligence (AI) techniques that have been adopted to handle such tasks.

Car failure detection KBS is proposed by Al-Taani, 2005 in his system, car faults are divided into
three states: Start-up state, Run-stable state and Movement-state. Shell Rule- based expert system
(CLIPS) with forward chaining inference engine is used in the implementation. CLIPS store’s the
knowledge in rules form, which has logic-based representation as well as the production rules. The
system interacts with the user through an interface and gives the diagnosis result with illustration.
However, improvement in the domain knowledge and applying adaptive technique for knowledge
creation are required in such system.

1.2 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The main Aims of this study are to designed and implement an expert diagnosed system for Car
(Peugeot). The objectives includes

1. To detect faulty problem in Car (Peugeot)

2. To provide integrated maintenance and repair tracking solution,
3. To provide a trouble shoot system of faulty repairs like a master technician

4. It will conclude its diagnosis based on the symptoms selected by the user.

1.3 SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY

This Project work “An expert system for diagnosing Cars’’ will function to help Peugeot users and
mechanic in diagnosing and detecting problem or fault in the Cars using an automated
computerised system. It will be of significant to Peugeot users as it will reduce the cost of fault
repairing and mechanic work.

1.4 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Car user’s especially commercial users are seriously disturbed with the problem of fault repairing
and maintenance. Most of the damage and problem encountered by users are as result irregular
frequent check-up and maintenance. These problems can be highlighted as follows:

1. Frequent fault development such as brake failure, gear fault and wheel faulty.
2. Poor repairing by mechanics that are not professional in the aspect which advance the
initial fault.
3. Lack of proper and regular service and spare part check up.
4. Unable to detect or diagnosed faulty problem by the local mechanics.
5. Long duration (time wasting) in repairing of minor faulty by mechanics.

1.5 SCOPE AND LIMITATION

This Project work will cover the design and implementation of an expert diagnosed system of Car
(Peugeot) The software will be designed using Visual Basic 6.0 this system will detected problem
from the Cars (Peugeot) and diagnosis it. It will diagnosis some part of the Peugeot.

purpose of achieving a particular objectives by accepting inputs and producing output in
an organized transformation system.
▪ PROGRAM: is a set of instruction that tell the computer what to do or how to perform a
specific instruction.
▪ DATA: A data is a raw fact that is ready to be process or information that is not processed.
▪ PROCESS: involved transformation process that convert input into meaningful output.
▪ INPUT: Simply means what is given to the computer to process.
▪ OUTPUT: is the result of computer processing, it is what is obtained from computer as
information.
▪ IMPLEMENTATION: is the ability of putting the newly designed system into operation,
it is defines as raw fact and figures which are given to the computer in order to generate
output.
