Montreal PoCUS Ultrasound Training Volunteer Roles

There are 4 different volunteer roles during the course. You will
alternate between these roles as needed. We try our best to ensure
everyone will get the opportunity to be an ultrasound model.

Role 1: Ultrasound Model

 There are 10 rooms. 7 rooms on the adult side and 3 rooms on the
pediatrics side. You will be assigned to one room. Each room has
an exam table, an ultrasound machine, and an instructor. The
instructor will help prepare you for the station. Male and female
models will be asked to lift up their shirt up to expose the abdomen
and lay on the table. Female models should preferably wear a
sports bra. Course participants (physicians and medical students)
will rotate through your station. Each participant will go through a
series of maneuvers with the instructor for that station.
 Small note for ultrasound models: You're mostly staying in the
same room at each station (lasting 30 minutes). Once the station is
finished, participants rotate, and new participants will come to scan
you shortly after (after 1-2 minutes). Therefore, it is not necessary
to wipe off the ultrasound gel in between stations. This will help us
be a bit more environmentally friendly and use less towels. Of
course, once you are switching or leaving your station to use the
bathroom or for lunch, towels are provided so you can dry off
thoroughly. Thank you for your cooperation.

Role 2: Back-up ultrasound model

 The course is a fast-paced course for the participants. Those
participants that finish scanning all their modules at their station,
may ask for a new model to come in. Also, if a model needs a
break or needs to use the washroom, we will substitute them in the
meantime. It is important for back-up models to remain in the
waiting room to be ready to go in as soon as needed. There will be
one waiting room on the adult side and one waiting room on the
pediatrics side.

Role 3: Chaperone (To guide participants from adult side 

pediatrics side and pediatrics side  adult side)
 There are two sections in the course adult site (7 rooms) and
pediatric side (3 rooms). At the end of station 7 in adult side, the
two participants need to make their way to the pediatrics side.
Similarly, at the end of station 3 in pediatrics side, the two
participants need to make their way to adult side. The path takes
about 2 minutes of walking, but it’s important that participants do
not get lost so as to not lose scanning time. We need 2 volunteers
to accompany them and show them the way. Our volunteer
coordinators will show you the way for the first time.

Role 4: Steward (To knock on the doors, enter and bring water/drinks
to instructors/participants/models and ask if models need a break for
example to use the washroom)
 Scanning day of the course is a very packed and busy day.
Instructors remain in each scanning room while participants rotate
through different rooms every 30-35 minutes. Except for the lunch
break, instructors and participants will not get much time as a
break. Therefore, we need a volunteer (2 on adult side where there
are 7 rooms and 1 on pediatrics side where there are 3 rooms, to
knock on the doors and bring water/beverages to
instructors/participants/models).
 At the same time, this is a good opportunity to ask if the ultrasound
model would like to have a break and come to the general waiting
room).
