CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

People have always desired to communicate or just simplify their life. To send a

message from one place to another, people in the past have employed carrier pigeons, drums,

and smoke signals. That is an obvious illustration of why it is essential for humans to

communicate from remote regions. Martin Cooper created the first mobile phone in 1932 for

this reason.

Mobile phones changed as time went on. Initially black and white, they soon included

a camera, music player, video player, file storage, radio, internet, and, in some cases, a

television, to meet the needs of students and other people. Mobile phones are now seen as one

of the needs, not the wants, in our culture.

At the moment, education is moving in the direction of using more technology in

classrooms, from primary to collegiate levels. Mobile phones, computers, and tablets are the

most often utilized gadgets for education in high schools and colleges. The goal of using

these tools is to improve pupils' academic performance. Students use technology for tasks

including taking notes, doing research, and communicating. Despite the fact that these tools

are meant to enhance students' educational experiences, there have been some unfavorable

outcomes of using contemporary technology in the classroom. Although the connection

between student cell phone use and academic achievement is not well understood.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study is generally aimed to identify the effect of mobile phone usage on the

academic performance of selected students of Bukidnon National School of Home Industries.

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the level of impact of mobile phone usage on the academic performance of

students?

A. too much screen time usage

B. decrease in academic performance

C. distraction
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

Our study focuses on how to recognize the advantages and disadvantages of mobile

phones for students, how to use them responsibly, and the obligations that come with using

them.

1. To identify the benefits of mobile phones to the students of Bukidnon National

School of Home Industries.

2. To demonstrate the negative effects of mobile phones to Bukidnon National School

of Home Industries.

3. To determine the particular reasons and responsibilities of students when using a

mobile phone.
HYPOTHESES

i. Student academic performance is not significantly related to mobile phone usage.

ii. There is no significant relationship between student use of mobile phones and their

learning.

iii. There is no significant gender difference in students' use of mobile phones.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study focuses on the causes and effects of mobile phones on the academic

performance of students in Program Bukidnon National School of Home Industries, and the

findings will benefit the students by improving their discipline and knowledge of how to use

mobile phones responsibly.

Students

Because they will obtain a complete understanding of how mobile phones affect

academic achievement, students will gain the most from this study. They will learn the truth

and become enlightened.

Parents

Our parents are the keepers of our lives. They will be able to understand and become

aware of how mobile devices affect the academic achievement of their students. The studies

on how to raise children properly will serve as their parents' guide.

Teachers

We refer to our teachers as our "second parents." They will be able to discover how

mobile phones affect pupils' academic achievement. By doing this, they will gain knowledge

on how to manage, correct, and instruct the kids.

School Administration

The administration of the school will take what they have learnt and use it to design a

policy allowing pupils to use their phones as a tool for their study.
SCOPE AND LMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

This study focuses on the impact of mobile phone usage to the academic

performance of selected Senior High School Students of BNSHI.

This study will be on senior high school students who are officially enrolled for the

school year 2022-2023. The study will be carried out at the Bukidnon National School of

Home Industries in Maramag, Bukidnon, Philippines.

The study was constrained by time, finance, and mobility. The study covered two

secondary schools in Senior High at BNSHI

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Students can access a range of electronic media through their mobile devices

practically anywhere and at any time. Popular activities including playing video games,

browsing the internet, sending texts, and keeping an eye on their own social media accounts

are associated with how well adolescents perform academically. Students today are

completely enamored with using technology. For their amusement and to receive the newest

of the new, they typically prefer to purchase the most recent models of these devices,

particularly mobile phones. Thus, students frequently spend more time on their phones than

they do studying, which has an impact on their study habits and academic achievement.

RESEARCH LITERATURE

Gore (2010) calculated it to be.18 utilizing the research and data that were subjected

to a Chi-Square analysis. This value was insignificant at the.05 level. It implies that her

research refutes the claim that using a cell phone as a learning tool can improve academic

performance in a classroom.

According to a study by Junco (2012), 53% of university undergraduate students

admitted to texting during class. Additionally, using a cell phone in class has a negative

impact on pupils' academic performance.

83.1% of students use their cell phones for messaging, 10.8% for calling, and 1.5%

for Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, according to Jones' (2014) research.

According to Freed (2017), a growing number of pupils are being cyberbullied at

school and he discovers that children are diverted from learning when using mobile devices.
