DIFFERENTIATING PRIME FROM COMPOSITE NUMBERS
Are you hard up in differentiating prime numbers from composite numbers? Here are the steps on how to differentiate Prime from
Composite Number.
Find/give the factors of the given number.
Count the number of factors listed base from the given numbers.
If the given number has only 2 factors and can only be divided exactly by 1 and itself, it is a prime number,
if the given number has more than 2 factors, it is a composite number.
Prime Numbers – are numbers greater than 1 which can be divided exactly by 1 and itself. It has 2 factors.
Composite Numbers – are numbers greater than 1 which has more than 2 factors.
2÷2=1
2 ÷ 1= 2
Factors: 2 x 1, 2 x 1
3÷3=1
3÷1=3
Factors: 3 x 1, 3 x 1
4÷4=1
4÷2=2
4÷1=4
By looking for the factors, you can identify the given number if it is PRIME or COMPOSITE.
Note: In dividing a number from the given number, the quotient should always be a whole number or there is no remainders.
Example: 30
What numbers can be divided from 30?
Answer: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 15, 30
30 ÷ 1 = 30
30 ÷ 2 = 15
30 ÷ 3 = 10
30 ÷ 5 = 6
no remainder
30 ÷ 6 = 5
30 is a Composite number because it has more
30 ÷ 10 = 3 than 2 factors.
30 ÷ 30 = 1
ACTIVITY CARD
I. Give the factors of the following and identify each number if it is PRIME or
COMPOSITE
1. 45
2. 50
3. 37
4. 72
5. 36
Key Answer
1. 1, 3, 5, 9, 15, and 45 - COMPOSITE
2. 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, and 50 – COMPOSITE
3. 1, 37 – PRIME
4. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, 18, 24, 36, and 72 – COMPOSITE
5. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 36 – COMPOSITE
Legend:
5 – excellent
3-4 – good
1 – 2 – try again
DO IT AGAIN!!!!
Give the factors each of the following and tell whether the number is PRIME or COMPOSITE.
