DIFFERENTIATING PRIME FROM COMPOSITE NUMBERS

Are you hard up in differentiating prime numbers from composite numbers? Here are the steps on how to differentiate Prime from
Composite Number.
 Find/give the factors of the given number.
 Count the number of factors listed base from the given numbers.
 If the given number has only 2 factors and can only be divided exactly by 1 and itself, it is a prime number,
if the given number has more than 2 factors, it is a composite number.

Prime Numbers – are numbers greater than 1 which can be divided exactly by 1 and itself. It has 2 factors.

Composite Numbers – are numbers greater than 1 which has more than 2 factors.

2 is a prime number, why?

2÷2=1

2 ÷ 1= 2

Factors: 2 x 1, 2 x 1

Factors: 1 and 2, it has 2 factors

3 is a prime number also, why?

3÷3=1

3÷1=3

Factors: 3 x 1, 3 x 1

Factors: 1 and 3, it has 2 factors

4 is a composite number, why?

4÷4=1
4÷2=2

4÷1=4

Factors: 1x4, 2x2, 4x1

Factors: 1, 2, and 4, it has 3 factors

By looking for the factors, you can identify the given number if it is PRIME or COMPOSITE.

Note: In dividing a number from the given number, the quotient should always be a whole number or there is no remainders.

Example: 30
What numbers can be divided from 30?
Answer: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 15, 30
30 ÷ 1 = 30
30 ÷ 2 = 15
30 ÷ 3 = 10
30 ÷ 5 = 6
no remainder
30 ÷ 6 = 5
30 is a Composite number because it has more
30 ÷ 10 = 3 than 2 factors.

30 ÷ 15 = 2 Its factors are: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 15, and 30.

30 ÷ 30 = 1
