According to a survey by the Algerian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in
November 2019, 93.6% of the Algerians consider that the English language should be taught in all levels. The
survey was done to find out if they accept to study English as a second language from primary school up to the
post-graduation level.
The statistics show that 80.6% of the people questioned considered that teaching English is compulsory
and not optional. Besides, 70.5% answered that the adequate way of teaching it is to use the classical teaching
instead of E- learning (online learning). Moreover, 29% of the informants think that generalizing teaching
English in all levels must be done step by step and not at once.
Actually, the findings above show the acceptance of Algerian people to study English as a foreign
language in all levels. These statistics can be explained differently. Firstly, English is important as it is the
language of science. Moreover, they refer to the new strategy of the Algerian government that seeks to make a
reform in education mainly after the Algerian “Hirak” of 2019. In this context, the minister of Higher Education
declared: “mastering English by our students is a priority for Algeria in this period.”
