Learning Experiences and Self-Assessment Activities (SAA)

In every Organization, a leader is an Essential person. He is the one that leads co-student to
attain the goals that they have set. An essential part of directing the people to work is leadership.
Several authors give different definition of leadership. According to Fedler (1967) one may use
term leadership to:

1. Distinguish people in an organization or group;

2. An ability; and
3. A relationship.

Definition of Leadership

In the first sense, Leadership refers to those who provide direction and guidance.

In the second sense, the Leadership has been defined , among others as “the art of
including subordinates to accomplish their assignment with zeal and confidence”. (Koontz &
O” Donell, 1981).

2|Page
In the third sense, it has been defined as “the relationship in which one person (the
leader) influences others to work together willingly on related task to attain goals desired by
the leader and or, group”. (Terry & Fraklin, 1982).

Leadership is the process of influencing individuals or groups to achieve goals. It can be

correlated to the following:
 Authority
 Direction
 Motivator
 Reinforce
 Persuasion
 Cheerleader
 Coach
 Nurturer
 delagate

Further it is a planned process, which result in the following:

1. Challenging people to work collaboratively toward an ever expanding, vision of

excellence in the achievement or organization and personal / professional goals and
objectives.
2. Creating a treat-free environment for growth, so that the creative talents and skills are
used to the best knowledge.
3. Encouraging and building working relationship that are individually and organizationally
satisfying, unifying and strengthening in the realization of mutually determined goals and
objectives. Such relationship results in effective group problem solving.

Three Types of Leadership

1. Authoritative leadership through fear

Authoritarian leadership is a now outdated form of management that, especially in
recent decades, is sure to create a lot of resistance among employees. The word
authoritarian comes from the Greek language and derives from the word autocratic.
‘Auto’ means self and ‘cratic’ means rules. Authoritarian Leadership is a leadership style
in which, without accepting participation, the authoritarian leader makes all the decisions
themselves and delegates the tasks. This leader will check and punish their employees
more severely and quickly. When the results are disappointing, or when the leader
expects this to happen, the authoritarian leader will use his power to threaten sanctions
such as dismissal so that undesirable behavior can be prevented. Managers with an
authoritarian leadership style exert a lot of negative influence on the employees and have
an image of them that corresponds to the vision from McGregor’s Theory X.

2. Persuasive or Democratic type of Leadership

Also known as participative leadership or shared leadership, is a type of
leadership style in which members of the group take a more participative role in the
decision-making process. This type of leadership can apply to any organization, from
private businesses to schools to government.

3. Free-rein type of leadership

Under this style, a manager gives complete freedom to his subordinates. The
entire decision-making authority is entrusted to them. There is least intervention by
the leader and so the group operates entirely on its own.
