LABOR DAY
LAMENTATION
https://opinion.inquirer.net/162786/labor-day-lamentation
1.WHAT IS THE EDITORIAL ABOUT? WHAT
IS THE STAND OR POSITION OF THE
EDITOR REGARDING THE ISSUE?
Group 1 5

ANSWER

• The editorial is about the current situation of workers in the Philippines on Labor
Day, highlighting issues such as lack of jobs, low pay, high cost of living, and
labor migration. The editorial also mentions the struggle of minimum wage earners
to make ends meet, especially with the recent surge in inflation. The editorial takes
a critical position, stating that labor unions are protesting rather than celebrating
the occasion, and pointing out that the minimum wage has hardly been adjusted to
catch up with rising prices. The editorial suggests that this lack of adjustment is a
perennial sticky point for workers and that it contributes to the difficulties that they
face.

2. WHAT ARE THE EVIDENCES MENTIONED IN

THE EDITORIAL THAT SUPPORT THE
WRITER’S CLAIM OR POSITION?
Group 1 7

ANSWER
• It cited the minimum wage in Metro Manila, the highest
in all regions, which is not even half of the family living
wage in the region. It said the P570 minimum wage in the
National Capital Region is only 49.1 percent of the
P1,161 family living wage requirement as of January
2023. In the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim
Mindanao (BARMM), which has the lowest minimum
wage, the P341 basic daily pay is only 17.5 percent of the
region’s family living wage of P1,944.
• The Ibon Foundation, a nonprofit think tank, highlights
the significant gap between the minimum wage and the
needed income for a family of five to live decently. They
state that the government's poverty threshold is only
P12,030 a month, which leaves each family member with
only P80.20 a day for all their needs.

ANSWER
• Representatives from Gabriela, ACT Teachers, and
Kabataan party lists filed House Bill No. 7568 seeking a
P750 minimum wage regardless of employment status,
industry classification, and location of the enterprise.
3. DO YOU AGREE WITH THE
EDITOR? EXPLAIN YOUR ANSWER.
Group 1 10

ANSWER

• A part of me agree that our country should have an increase in

minimum wage, because if people are working 8 to 10 hours a
day and can’t even pay for basic needs then there is really a
problem inside this topic.
Group 1 11

ANSWER

• There is a part of me disagree at the idea of minimum wage

increase. Because a sudden increase on minimum wage might
cause a domino effect. Minimum wage increase > More
demand on market > Price increase > Inflation

4. WHAT IS YOUR REACTION

ABOUT THE EDITORIAL?
13

TIMELINE

• This editorial made me realize it is hard to govern a

country. The salary of every person is what makes them
alive everyday. This issue may be hard to resolve, But it is
easy for us to choose a leader that can help us fight this
problem.
5. WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE MAJOR
CONSIDERATIONS TO NOTE WHEN DOING A
CRITICAL READING OF A TEXT LIKE AN
EDITORIAL?
Group 1 15

ANSWER
When doing a critical reading of a text like an editorial,
it is important to consider the author's biases and
perspective, as well as the evidence and sources they
use to support their claims. It is also important to
analyze the language and tone used in the text, as well
as the context and historical background of the topic
being discussed. Additionally, it is helpful to consider
any counterarguments or alternative perspectives that
may exist and evaluate the strength of the argument
presented in the editorial.
