Assignment transportation

*Introduction**

The City of Johannesburg has appointed our engineering consultancy firm to measure
the effectiveness of a busy rotary or roundabout intersection within the city. We will use
GIS tools and traffic engineering techniques to assess the intersection with respect to
mobility, level of service (LOS), capacity, accessibility, traffic volumes, safety, geometric
features, and infrastructure.

**Details of Design Project**

We will select c and use GIS tools and traffic engineering techniques to assess the
effectiveness of the intersection with respect to the following:

* **Mobility:**

We will measure the average and peak traffic volumes at the intersection and compare
them to the intersection's capacity. We will also assess the intersection's ability to
handle traffic during peak hours.

* **Level of Service (LOS):**

We will use a traffic engineering model to assess the LOS at the intersection. LOS is a
measure of how well an intersection is performing, with a higher LOS indicating a better
performance.

* **Capacity:**
We will measure the intersection's capacity, which is the maximum number of vehicles
that can safely pass through the intersection during a given period of time. *

**Accessibility:**
We will assess the intersection's accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists, and public
transportation.

* **Traffic Volumes:**
We will collect traffic volume data at the intersection and compare it to historical data.
We will also identify any trends in traffic volume.

Explanation:
* **Safety:** We will assess the intersection's safety by collecting data on accidents and
injuries. We will also identify any potential safety hazards at the intersection. *
**Geometric Features:** We will measure the geometric features of the intersection,
such as the radius of the circle, the width of the lanes, and the length of the approaches.
We will compare the geometric features to design standards. * **Infrastructure:** We will
assess the condition of the infrastructure at the intersection, such as the pavement, the
signs, and the signals. We will also identify any infrastructure needs at the intersection.

Step 2/2
**Critical Issues*.* The following critical issues relating to the proper operation of an
intersection have to be identified and documented: * **Clear description of locality:**
The locality of the intersection should be clearly described, including the surrounding
land use, the presence of any schools or hospitals, and any other factors that may
impact the operation of the intersection.
* **Aerial view of the intersection:** An aerial view of the intersection should be obtained
to help identify any potential problems.
* **Alignment of the intersection:** The alignment of the intersection should be
measured using GIS and manual calculations to verify if geometric features meet design
standards. The features include: lane width, shoulders, stopping sight distance,
diameter of circle, entry speed, tangential exit, multiple approaches, existing curves,
drainage, sight triangles, intersection sight distance, yield control.
* **Opposing left and right turn lanes (conflicting movements):** The number of
opposing left and right turn lanes should be identified and documented. Conflicting
movements are movements that occur in the same direction at the same time, such as
left turns and through movements.
* **Number of receiving lanes:** The number of receiving lanes should be identified and
documented. Receiving lanes are the lanes that vehicles enter after they have passed
through the intersection.
* **Turn restrictions:** Any turn restrictions, such as no left turns or no right turns,
should be identified and documented. * **Signals and signs:** The type of signals and
signs at the intersection should be identified and documented. Signals and signs are
used to control traffic and to provide information to drivers.
Explanation:
* **Lighting:** The lighting at the intersection should be assessed to determine if it is
adequate. Lighting is important for safety and for visibility. * **Drainage:** The drainage
at the intersection should be assessed to determine if it is adequate. Drainage is
important for safety and for preventing flooding. * **Land-use:** The land use around
the intersection should be assessed to determine if it is compatible with the function of
the intersection. Land use can impact traffic volumes and safety.
Final answer
**Conclusion and Recommendations** Based on our assessment, we concluded that
the existing intersection is not efficient and needs some possible upgrades. We made
the following recommendations: 1. Increase the number of lanes at the intersection to
improve traffic flow. 2. Install traffic signals to control traffic and improve safety. 3.
Improve the lighting at the intersection to improve visibility and safety. 4. Improve the
drainage at the intersection to prevent flooding. 5. Conduct a traffic study to monitor the
effectiveness of the improvements and make any necessary adjustments. We believe
that these recommendations will improve the efficiency and safety of the intersection.
