Describe first each phenomenon using 2-3 sentences.

Classify the given phenomena either as Natural or Man-Made Hazard

Ground shaking
- Natural
- Ground shaking is caused by body waves and surface waves. As a generalization, the
severity of ground shaking increases as magnitude increases and decreases as distance
from the causative fault increases and Ground shaking, is the result of rapid ground
acceleration.
- Ground Shaking is the vibration of the ground during an earthquake. It is caused by body
waves and surface waves. As a generalization, the severity of ground shaking increases as
magnitude increases and decreases as distance from the causative fault increases.

Tornado
- Natural
- Tornado is a violent rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground.
Tornadoes form when warm, humid air collides with cold, dry air. Spawned from
powerful thunderstorms, tornadoes can cause fatalities and devastate a neighborhood in
seconds. Winds of a tornado may reach 300 miles per hour.
- Tornado is a violent rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground.
Tornadoes are vertical funnels of rapidly spinning air. They are also known as twisters,
tornadoes are born in thunderstorms and are often accompanied by hail. Giant, persistent
thunderstorms called supercells spawn the most destructive tornadoes.

Flood
- Natural
- Floods are among the most common and devastating natural disasters. It occur when an
overflow of water submerges land that is usually dry. Floods are caused by rapid and
excessive rainfall that raises water heights quickly, and rivers, streams, channels or roads
may be overtaken.
- Flood is an overflow of water that submerges land that is usually dry. Floods are an area
of study in the discipline of hydrology. They are the most common and widespread
natural severe weather event. Floods are often caused by heavy rainfall, rapid snowmelt
or a storm surge from a tropical cyclone or tsunami in coastal areas.
Lava flow
- Natural
- Lava flows are the least hazardous of all processes in volcanic eruptions. As pressure is
released gases, dissolved in the magma, bubble out so the composition of lava changes.
Lava flows can form during fountaining eruptions or they can well out of the ground with
little or no pyroclastic activity.
- lava flow is an outpouring of lava created during an effusive eruption. They are the least
hazardous of all processes in volcanic eruptions. How far a lava flow travels depends on
the flows temperature, silica content, extrusion rate, and slope of the land

Industrial pollution
- Man-made
- Industrial pollution is the pollution which can be directly linked with industry. Caused
by things such as factories, power plants, cars, airplanes, chemicals, fumes from spray
cans, and methane gas from landfill. Industrial activities are a major source of air, water
and land pollution, leading to illness and loss of life all over the world.
- Industrial pollution is the pollution which can be directly linked with industry. This form
of pollution is one of the leading causes of pollution worldwide. It is caused by factories,
power plants, cars, airplanes, chemicals, fumes from spray cans, and methane gas from
landfill.

Typhoon
- Natural
- Typhoon forms when winds blow into areas of the ocean where the water is warm. These
winds collect moisture and rise, while colder air moves in below. Typhoons can inflict
terrible damage due to thunderstorms, violent winds, torrential rain, floods, landslides,
large and very big waves associated with storm surges.
- Typhoon is an intense area of low atmospheric pressure. It forms when winds blow into
areas of the ocean where the water is warm. Due to thunderstorms, strong winds,
torrential rain, flooding, landslides, huge and very high waves associated with storm
surges, typhoons can cause terrible harm.

Forest fire
- Natural or Manmade
- A forest fire is an uncontrolled burning within the forest. It can be caused by natural
disasters or man-made causes. Forest fires increase carbon dioxide levels in the
atmosphere contributing to the greenhouse effect and climate change.
- A forest Fire is the uncontrolled fire that occurs above 6 feet (1.8 m) in height in
woodland. This fires sometimes exceed the proportions of a global conflagration, and
combustion and heat from surface and land fires are often started. A large forest fire will
crown, that is, spread rapidly until involving undergrowth or the forest floor through the
topmost branches of the trees.

Liquefaction
- Natural and Man Made
- Liquefaction is a phenomenon in which the strength and stiffness of a soil is reduced by
earthquake shaking or other rapid loading. Liquefaction occurs when vibrations or water
pressure within a mass of soil cause the soil particles to lose contact with one another. As
a result, the soil behaves like a liquid, has an inability to support weight and can flow
down very gentle slopes.
- Liquefaction occurs beneath buildings and other structures that can cause major damage
during earthquakes. It is a phenomenon in which earthquake shaking or other fast
loading decreases the strength and stiffness of the soil.
Storm surge
- Natural
- Storm surge is an abnormal rise of water generated by a storm, over and above the
predicted astronomical tide. It is caused primarily by the strong winds in a hurricane or
tropical storm. The impact on surge of the low pressure associated with intense storms is
minimal in comparison to the water being forced toward the shore by the wind.
- Storm surge is the abnormal rise in seawater level during a storm, measured as the height
of the water above the normal predicted astronomical tide. It is caused by a Strong
hurricane winds blow along the ocean surface and cause water to pile up as it approaches
the shoreline. Low pressure at the storm's center causes water to bulge upward. The
Storm surge effect from wind is much higher than that caused by low pressure.

Tsunami
- NATURAL
- tsunami are caused by large earthquakes at the seafloor, when large slabs of rock are
forced to move past each other suddenly causing the overlying water to move. This force
creates waves that radiate outward in all directions away from their source, sometimes
crossing entire ocean basins.
- Tsunamis are giant waves caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions under the sea. Out
in the depths of the ocean, tsunami waves do not dramatically increase in height. But as
the waves travel inland, they build up to higher and higher heights as the depth of the
ocean decreases. It is caused by large earthquakes at the seafloor, when large slabs of
rock are forced to move past each other suddenly causing the overlying water to move. It
may may travel as fast as jet planes over deep waters, only slowing down when reaching
shallow waters.

landslide is the movement of a mass of rock, debris, or earth down a slope. Landslides are a type
of "mass wasting," which denotes any down-slope movement of soil and rock under the direct
influence of gravity. The term "landslide" encompasses five modes of slope movement: falls,
topples, slides, spreads, and flows.

Indoor fire means the burning of materials in any enclosed or confined area. These Indoor fire
can occur from faulty wiring, defective products, discarded cigarettes, left on flammable
materials, and smoke detectors that fail to activate. It can result in serious injury and damage to
personal property.

Extreme rainfall
- Natural

- Extreme rainfall events on the basis of the amount of surface rainfall vary widely. Heavy
rainfall can lead to numerous hazards, flood and landslide, including risk to human life, damage
to buildings and infrastructure, and loss of crops and livestock.
- Extreme rainfall conditions vary greatly on the basis of the volume of surface rainfall. Different
threats, flooding and landslides may result from heavy rainfall, including threats to human life,
damage to buildings and facilities, and loss of crops and livestock.

Describe the basis of your classification.

 Disasters may be described as a sudden, accidental occurrence of great severity that
causes life and property to sustain significant damage. They are abrupt, dramatic and
usually happen without any warning or alarm. Such events, such as earthquakes, can be
short-lived, and some others may be long-lasting, such as flooding. However, the
devastation in the form of deaths, casualties and loss of property is enormous, regardless
of the period of the tragedy. Many disasters are of natural causes, but certain disasters are
also man-made. They are called natural disasters if the disasters arise due to natural
causes, for which man has barely have a control. While, they are considered man-made
disasters if the disasters are due to human carelessness, human intent or error. All kinds
of man made disasters lead to human suffering, loss of life and a long term damage to a
nations economy.
