Module 2: Resume
WHAT IS A RESUME?

 A resume is a document that summarizes your career history, skills and education. The
term originates from the French word résumé, which translates to “abstract” or
“summary.”

WHAT IS A CV?

 A CV (abbreviation for the Latin word curriculum vitae, or “course of life”) is a detailed
and comprehensive document which describes the course of your academic and professional
accomplishments.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CV AND RESUME

Length

 Since a resume includes your skills and qualifications for a specific role only, it should
typically be just one or two pages.
 A CV won’t have a length limit and is much longer than most resumes because it includes
more information and more detailed descriptions of coursework, research, publications or
presentations.

Career type

 CVs are mostly used to apply for academic roles or programs, grants, fellowships and
research or teaching positions. You may have a CV if you are currently applying to or
have graduated from a master's or doctoral program, or if you work as a professor or
researcher at an academic institution.
 Resumes are used when applying for jobs in the private or public sectors which are often
referred to as “industry positions” in contrast to academia.

Geographic location

 In other regions of the world, such as the UK, New Zealand and parts of Europe,
employers use the term CV to describe both CV and resume-style documents and don’t
use the term “resume” at all.
WHEN TO USE A RESUME VS. CV?

 When deciding whether to submit a resume or a CV, consider the role and geographic
location of the position. If you’re in doubt, don’t hesitate to ask a representative of the
organization such as the hiring manager, recruiter or an HR representative to help you
decide.

CV AND RESUME FORMAT

Module 3: Cover Letter
COVER LETTER

 is where you can show your passion for the position and the company, and highlight your
most relevant qualifications. Many employers require cover letters as part of the job
application process. However, even when an employer does not explicitly ask for a cover
letter, you should send one.
 The key to writing effective cover letters is to follow instructions and communicate
succinctly but with a compelling voice.

COVER LETTER FORMAT

TIPS

1. Customize your header based on your application format

 If you’re writing cover letter directly within an online job application, there’s no need to
include your address or other contact information, as you’ve probably already typed that
into other areas of the application form. If you’re including your cover letter as an
attachment, you can use the same heading as your resume.

2. Use an appropriate greeting

 If you don’t know the name of hiring manager, you can begin your letter with a simple
“Hello” or “Dear Hiring Manager”. More formal introductions such as “To whom it may
concern” or “Dear sir or ma’am” can come across as too stuffy for some organizations,
while greetings like “Hey” and “Hi there”, are almost always too casual for a cover
letter

3. Keep it short and to the point

 Unless specified in the job description, there is no required length for a cover letter, just
focus on the details that are most important for the job.

4. Avoid generic references to your abilities

 Whenever possible, tell meaningful anecdotes that tie your skills to concrete problem-
solving activities or tangible business results you’ve worked on in your career.

5. Proofread before you submit

 Reread your cover letter several times before submitting it and keep an eye out for
errors of spelling, grammar, or punctuation. Reading the letter aloud can help you pick
out awkward phrasing or too long sentences
