1 General

1.1 Scope
This document is to be used as a guide for selection of proper Medium Voltage (MV) switchgear to be
utilized with the ACS 2000 4 kV variable speed drive. Application of the MV switchgear and overall
system overview is also provided in this document.
This document does not apply to ACS 2000 4kV variable speed drives ordered with the Integral Input
Contactor and Disconnect option. The requirements, functions, and wiring shown within this document
are fulfilled with this option, refer to Appendix P - Integral Input Contactor Disconnect for details. It is
recommended that the customer provides a Medium Voltage maintenance disconnect in accordance
with local and national electrical codes when this option is ordered.

1.2 Standards
The following standards are referenced in this document:
• All MV Switchgear IEC or NEMA standards for specific application must be followed

1.3 System Description

ABB ACS 2000 used in this project, includes an Active Front End (AFE) for AC to DC conversion, a DC-
link with Capacitor Bank Unit(s) and an Inverter Units (INU) for DC to AC conversion. ACS 2000 is a
Direct-to-Line (no transformer) Five Level Active Neutral Point Clamped (ANPC-5L) Voltage Source
Inverter (VSI). The control principle on the INU is Direct Torque Control (DTC), which means that the
switching frequency is not constant, only the average switching frequency is controlled.

1.4 Acronyms/Term Definitions

The following definitions for terms or acronyms are used in this document:
• IOEC - Input / Output Interface Module
• MCB - Main Circuit Breaker, also referred to as ‘switchgear’ within this document
• ACS 2000 - Device will also be referred to as ‘converter’ or ‘drive’ within this document
• AC - Alternating Current
• DC - Direct Current
• MV - Medium Voltage

2 Overview

2.1 Function
A MV switchgear device must be used at the main power supply of the ACS 2000 converter. The
switchgear is the main connection and disconnection point from the main power supply to the converter.
The switchgear must be able to communicate with and respond to commands from the converter. MV
switchgear acts as a protection device for the fuse-less versions of the ACS 2000, preventing hazard to
personnel and damage to equipment.
Figure 1 shows a single-line diagram of a typical drive system. A typical drive system includes a main
power feed, switchgear, an optional transformer, the ACS 2000 converter, and electrical motor.

The switchgear disconnects the power feed when required by the process or when a fault occurs. MV
circuit breakers, fused contactors, and motor control centers are a few examples of switchgear that is
compatible with the ACS 2000 converter.

2.2 Optional Cable Protection

An optional protection relay may be used in the drive system for additional cable protection. This may
also be used when a transformer is present in the drive system. The relay is not included within the
converter provided by ABB.

3 Switchgear Selection Criteria

3.1 Standards
Switchgear selection must be in accordance with IEC or NEMA and local standards regarding supply
voltage, load current, and short-circuit current. The ACS 2000 drive requirements are provided in this
section.
Switchgear that does not meet these requirements may cause physical injury and damage to
equipment.

3.2 Open Timing

Fused versions of the ACS 2000 require that the switchgear opening time plus arcing time, in response
to an open command from the converter, is less than 250 ms (milli-seconds). (to + ta < 250 ms)

Document number Lang. Rev. ind. Page

ABB Inc 2UEB000132 en D 3

Fuse-less versions utilize the switchgear as part of their protection strategy. They require that the
switchgear opening time plus arcing time, in response to an open command from the converter, is less
than 60 ms. (to + ta < 60 ms)

3.3 Close Timing

The ACS 2000 does not have any close timing requirements.

3.4 Control Power

The converter does not provide a power source for controlling the switchgear. Control power must be in
accordance with national and local standards.
The function of switchgear open on loss of control power is required. This may be accomplished with a
maintain coil, an undervoltage trip coil, or an equivalent undervoltage trip device.

3.5 Test / Service Operation

Commissioning and maintenance of the converter requires that the switchgear have the ability to operate
without medium voltage applied. This can be accomplished by providing a separate disconnect device
or a test position on a circuit breaker.

3.6 Control Interface

The standard converter switchgear interface provides close and open commands to the switchgear. At
least one closed monitoring signal from the switchgear is required. The converter can utilize additional
feedback signals indicating the switchgear is open and that it is available. Recommended control wiring
schemes are shown in Section 4. Refer to Table 1 for standard switchgear control signals.
Control interface signals
Signal name Usage
MCB order close Required closing command from the converter to the switchgear
/ MCB order trip Optional trip command from the converter to the switchgear, active
when de-energized
/ MCB order open Optional open command from the converter to the switchgear, active

MCB available Optional feedback from the switchgear to the converter indicating the

The converter control interface accommodates control voltages from 22 to 250 Volts (V) AC or 22 to 150
Volts (V) DC. Two current ratings are provided for trip and close circuits, they are listed in Table 2.

4 Wiring Diagrams
NOTICE
Commissioning will not proceed without submittal, verification, and sign-off of site specific MV switchgear
control wiring. Please consult Commissioning checklist, Chapter 7 of the user manual for details.

4.1 Exclusive Closing Control

The ACS 2000 must have exclusive control of closing the MV switchgear. The drive will operate the
switchgear in response to on and off commands. Section 5 provides more detail on these operations.

WARNING
The ACS 2000 must have exclusive control of closing the MV switchgear. Uncontrolled closing
of the switchgear may cause physical injury and damage the drive. ACS 2000 supplied with the optional
integral input contactor disconnect has this switching integral to the drive. See Appendix P for details.

It is also required that the attached switchgear opens upon loss of switchgear power. Typical devices
providing this behavior are contactors and circuit breakers with undervoltage trip devices. This section
provides details on the control wiring between the converter and different types of MV switchgear.

4.2 Wiring Configuration for MV Contactor

Figure 2 shows a typical wiring configuration for use with a medium voltage contactor. The MV contactor
utilizes a single maintained signal to operate its internal coil. An auxiliary contact, which follows the main
contacts, provides the required feedback signal to the drive.

5 Switchgear Operation
Under normal operation the drive opens and closes the switchgear. The ACS 2000 must have exclusive
control of closing the attached switchgear. Uncontrolled closing of the switchgear may cause
physical injury and damage the drive.
Additional trip devices such as external emergency off switches can be wired into emergency off portion
of the control interface as shown in Section 6.2. Opening of this circuit will remove power to the close
and trip circuits and will notify the drive of why the switchgear opened. The drive will trip when this circuit
opens.
The drive can be configured to use a variety of control locations for pre-charging and discharging of the
internal power electronics. Closing and opening of the attached switchgear is coordinated with the
internal drive activities and optional isolating equipment. Upon a 'Supply On' request, if no trips are
present and the drive grounding switch is open, the drive will pre-charge and close the switchgear. Upon
a 'Supply Off' request, fault class 1 trip, or an emergency off signal, the drive will open the switchgear
and discharge. The 'On' and 'Off' commands for the drive can be from the following locations.
• The 'Supply On' and 'Supply Off' buttons on the front panel of the drive
• Remote control locations wired into IOEC digital inputs DI07 and DI13
• Optional fieldbus interface (refer to Appendix B: Fieldbus Adapter Manuals for more details)

6 Control Interface Details

6.1 Control Interface Overview

Table 6 gives an overview of the switchgear control signal interface. Three signals are available to
control the opening and closing of the switchgear. Three feedbacks are available to detect switchgear
status. An additional three feedback signals are derived within the drive to monitor the tripping loop. The
control relays are shown in their deenergized positions, which are signaling ‘Trip’ to the connected
switchgear.
