Material: Sentence stress is the emphasis on words in a sentence so that what is said can be
understood by others. This emphasis can be in the form of one word or more, depending on
which part the speaker really wants to emphasize in the sentence. With an emphasis on
certain parts, listeners will more easily understand the meaning to be conveyed

Stress in longer words 2

Hi, I’m isna
In this lesson ,you can learn abaut stress in longer words 2in english

There are many longer word endings where the last letter is –y. In words with these endings,
the stress is placed on the syllable two from the end. Listen to these example.
pub lic
pub lic i ty
na tion al
na tio nal i ty

pho to graph
pho tog raph y
eli mate

4
eli ma tol o gy

as tro-
a stron my
chem ist
chem i stry

Note: If we add the ending –ic to a word, the stress goes on the syllable before-ic.
Notice the changes of stress, for example:

Photography photographic.

Note: In words for an expert in the subject , such as photographer or climatologist,

the stress stays on the same syllable as in the word ending in-y:

Photography photographer

Climatology climatologist

Many words for school and university subjects have one of the –y ending in this unit
or the ending –ics. Listen to the names of subjects in this text.

At school,I hated science subjects like physics, chemistry and biology you know and
ehm…I wasn’t very good at history, geography, economics. Anyway , when I went to
university, I wanted to do geology, but I couldn’t ‘cause I was no good at sciences so
in the end I did philosophy!

Note : Many english speakers do not pronounce the second syllable in

history , so that it sounds like this:/’histri/Oo.the first part of the word
geography may be pronounced as one or two syllables:/’dʒɒgrəfi/Ooo
or /dʒi:’ ɒgrəfi/oOoo. Many speakers do not pronouce the second syllable
in mathematics, so it sounds like this: /mæθ’mætiks/oOo.

ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION (joining words 1)

Intro :

Assalamu'alaikum warohmatullohi wabarokatuh.

Hi guys, welcome to my video, my name is Diah Febriana Munawaroh, my number

22332081. I study at the University of Muhammadiyah Ponorogo.
Oke guys, here we will learn together about joining words 1

Let's get started!!!

Main :

In speech, words are not sepearated, they join together. Sometimes it is difficult to
know where one word finishes and the next word begins. For example, pets enter
sounds the same as pet centre because the consonant /s/ could be at the end of the first
word or at the start of the second word. Listen to the examples. The phrases on the left
sound the same as the phrases on the right.

EXAMPLES :

▪︎Stopped aching stop taking

▪︎Ice-cream I scream

▪︎Know aim no name

▪︎Called Annie call Danny

Note : The spelling may be different in the two phrases which sound the same. For
example, the consonant sound /s/ is spelt S in pets, but C in centre. The consonant
sound/t/ is spelt D at the end of stopped, but T in taking.

Note : The /h/ is often dropped from the beginning of pronouns, so that thanked him
sounds like thank Tim.

Normally, we know from the context what a word is. For example, these two
sentences sound the same, but we know the first one is wrong because it has no sense.

7
EXAMPLES :

▪︎It snow good

▪︎It’s no good

Closing :

Oke, well may be until here our learning about joining words 1 may be useful.

Thank very much. See you next time.

Wassalamu'alaikum Warohmatullohi Wabarokatuh

Pronouncing Short Words

‫فَ ْاذ ُكرُوْ نِ ٓ®ْي اَ ْذ ُكرْ ُك ْم َوا ْش ُكرُوْ ا لِ ْي َواَل تَ ْكفُرُوْ ِن‬
Translate :

"Maka ingatlah kepada-Ku, Aku pun akan ingat kepadamu. Bersyukurlah kepada-Ku, dan
janganlah kamu ingkar kepada-Ku."

"So remember Me and I shall remember you; give thanks to Me and do not be ungrateful to
Me for My favours."

Hello everyone, let me introduce myself. My name is Diah Lailatul Wahidah. Student number
22332080. In here, I will tell you about Short Words.

What are short words?

Short words like articles (a, the), conjunctions (and, or), and prepositions ( to, of) are usually
unstressed when spoken in sentences. They don’t receive the full pronunciation. Every line
has the stress pattern oOoO (unstressed-stressed-unstressed-stressed). They have this rhythm
because the first and the third words are all unstressed.

Example :

The blue words are unstressed.

Some milk and eggs

A tin of peas
A snack for lunch
Some fruit and cheese
The loaf of bread
A jar of jam
Some juice to drink
A piece of ham
Some pears or grapes

9
Some beans and rice
A can of beer
As cold as ice

The vowels in all the unstressed syllables are pronunced the same. In fast speech, the
consonant sounds after the vowel in these words may not be pronunced. In this case, and
sound like an, and of sounds like a.
And sounds like an :
An apple and an orange

Of sounds like a :
A bit of this and a bit of that

The consonant sound in "of" is not dropped when the following word begins with a vowel,
for example some of each.

The vowel sound in "to" and "the" is different if the following word begins with a vowel.

The word to changes from /tə/ to /tʊ/

We need water to drink and food to eat

The word the changes from /ðə/ to /ðɪ/

I’ll have the fish, and the apple pie for dessert.

The word to /tu/ changes to “tuh” /tə/

I want to go.

Okay, that's all about short words. Hope it useful. Thank you for your attention. Bye - bye.

Al-isra’: 31-32

‫طـًٔا َكبِيرًا‬ ٍ َ‫َواَل تَ ْقتُلُ ٓوا َأوْ لَ َد ُك ْم َخ ْشيَةَ ِإ ْمل‬

English translate : Slay not your children, fearing a fall to poverty, We shall provide for them
and for you. Lo! the slaying of them is great sin.

‫ُوا ٱل ِّزن ٰ َٓى ۖ ِإنَّهۥُ َكانَ ٰفَ ِح َشةً َو َسٓا َء َسبِياًل‬

۟ ‫َواَل تَ ْق َرب‬

English translate : And come not near unto adultery. Lo! it is an abomination and an evil way.
And come not near unto adultery. It is an abomination and an evil way.

This verse is very much in accordance with the life that is happening in today's era, regarding
the number of abortions carried out because of adultery or adultery or MBA, Even though
Allah swt has forbidden it but there are still many who violate it. Every time I tell my mom
that I want to date like my other friend, she always sends me this verse to ponder and don’t
talk about it, just focus about my dreams.

HOW TO PRONOUNS of PRONUNCIATION?
“Pronouns in sentences are usually unstressed. Look at this time: I met him. The
first and third words are pronouns. So this sentence has the stress pattern oOo.”

“o” Small is used to unstressed.

“O” big is for stressed.

For example :

15
You know her (oOo)
They read my book (OooO)
They saw you (oOo)
She phoned me(oOo)
“you don’t need to copy the fast speech pronunciation. People will understand
you if you use careful speech. But you need to be able to understand fast
speech.”

tempat kembali".

The meaning:The Apostle has faith in the Quran handed down to him from his God, as have the
believers. All have faith in God, His angels, His books and His apostles. (They say): "We do not
discriminate between any one (and another) of His apostles", and they say: "We hear and we
obey". (They prayed): "Forgive us, O our Lord, and you will return to you".

Beri maaflah
kami; ampunilah kami; dan rahmatilah kami. Engkaulah Penolong kami, maka tolonglah kami
terhadap kaum yang kafir".

The meaning: God does not burden a person but according to his ability. He gets the reward (from
virtue) he seeks and he gets the torment (from evil) he does. (They prayed): "O our Lord, thou
shalt not punish us if we forget or we are wronged . O our Lord, thou shalt not impose upon us a
heavy burden as thou didst impose upon the people before us. O our Lord, thou shalt not bear
upon us what we cannot bear. Forgive us; forgive us; and mercy on us. You are our Helper, so help
us against the heathens".

DIPHTHONG:A dipthong is a type of vowel sound that is made up of a combination of two vowel
sounds but within the same syllable.

 Explain the theory:

In the first column each sound ends with ( /Ә/ )

ɪǝ
սǝ

In the second column each sound ends with ( /I:/ )

ɔɪ

And in the third column each sound ends with ( /Ʊ/ )

ǝս

“Remember the dipthong are combination of 2 sounds, so your mouth will change position as you
say the word”.

Ok now look at the first column:

ɪǝ
Combination of ɪ and ǝ ur mouth should open a little as you go from the first sound to the second
sound, starting from the ɪ finishing on the ǝ.

As in word:

Year: j(/IӘ/)

Here: h(/ӀӘ/)

Really: r(/ӀӘ/)li:

սǝ

Combination of u and Ә your mouth should open a little you go from the first sound to the second
sound to the second sound starting on the u and finishing on the Ә

As in word:

Our: (/ƱӘ/)Ә

Power: p(/ƱӘ/)Ә

During: dƷ(/ƱӘ/)rɪɳ

18
Now we have combination of eg and ə in this sound the mouth dont open or close the main
difference is the shape of our lips. And the origin of our sound in our throat, starting on the e and
finishing on the ə

As in word:

Where: w(/eə/)

Parents: p(/eə/)rɘnt

There: ð(/eə/)r

Moving to the second column:

Now each sound ends with the vowel sound ih or Ӏ: because sometimes it is the longer Ӏ: sound

Which combination of e and Ӏ: this time we need to close our mouths a little as we say the sound
starting on the e finishing on the Ӏ:

As in word:

They: ð(/eɪ/)

Say: s(/eɪ/)

Make: m(/eɪ/)k

ɔɪ

This combination of o and Ӏ:, the shape or our lips and the position of our tongue also change a lot
going from rouded lips to unrounded, starting in the o and finishing on the Ӏ:

As in word:

Boy: b(/ɔɪ/)

Point: p(/ɔɪ/)nt

Oil: (/ɔɪ/)l

This is combination of a and Ӏ:, so our mouth start wide open and closes as we say the sound,
starting on the a finishing on the Ӏ:

As in word:

I: (/aɪ/)

By:b (/aɪ/)

Moving to third column:

ǝս

19
The next sound is ǝս this is a combination of ǝ and ս: the main difference here is the shape of the
lips rounding a little as we say the sound, starting on the ǝ and finishing on the u:

As in word:

Go: g(/ǝս/)

Know: n(/ǝս/)

Only: (/ǝս/)nly

Combination a and ս, now our mouth is closing and the shape of the lips is changing at the same
time rounding a little as we say the sound.

As in word:

Out: (/au/)t

How: h(/au/)

Down: d(/au/)n.

Hello everyone. Let me introduce myself. My name is Anisa Eka Yuliani. I am a student in
Muhammadiyah University Ponorogo, at English Education. In this video, I want to introduce
to you about Syllables. What are syllables? Syllables are a group of sounds that make a word.
Each word must have vowel. Let's take a look at what I mean.
Let's try it :
- Book
- Mother
- Banana
Did you hear that? If you hear the syllable breaks when you say, that is syllable sounds.
- 'Book' have 1 syllable
- 'Mother' have 2 syllables
- 'Banana' have 3 syllables
Basically, syllables have consonant sound before the vowel, after the vowel or before and
after the vowel.
Remember! Letters are not the same as sounds. Letters Y and W are not consonant sounds if
they come after the vowel sound. Eg. saw, say, pay.
In this case, we talk about pronunciation, not about writing. The word 'chocolate' in writing
maybe we can divide it into 3 parts 'cho-co-late'. But in pronunciation, we say it /tʃɒk.lət/. It
has 2 syllables. The other example are different /̍'dɪf.rənt/ and general /'dʒen.rəl/.
Alright, here are some simple examples about syllables.

Material about emphasis in words or what is commonly called word stress

 Definition Word Stress
Word stress is the emphasis in the pronunciation of syllables in English or the
sound stress that occurs in the syllabels. In the pronunciation we need to
emphasize the appropriate or the same as the dictionary.
 Type of word stress
Here I want to explain the types of word stress,
 The First is Primary Stress. In this type has the strongest stress in the
syllabels. In writing it is always marked with an upper quotation mark
or an apostrophe.
Example :
On the word Ability / ə ‘bɪləti / in the pronunciation of Ability on the
letter ’b is more emphasized.
In other words Positive / ‘pɒ zə tɪv / in the pronunciation of Positive on
the letter ‘pɒ is more emphasized.
 While Secondary Stress, this type is weaker or there is not much
emphasis, and this type is also marked with the underscore.
Example :
On the word Understand / ,ʌn də ‘stænd /
In other words Education / ,e dʒu ‘keɪ ʃn /
On the pronunciation Un of Understand and E on Education is read
low without stress, where as in the word “ Stand and Ca “ there are
read with stress or these words belong to the type of primary stress.
 Rule on Word Stress
There are several rules in word stress so that you can pronounce the vocab
correctly.
 Stress occurs only on vowel sounds
Example :

25
Reading / ‘riː dɪɳ /
Positive / ‘pɒ zə tɪv /
 Stress only occurs in words consisting of two or more syllables
Example :
Jump / dʒʌmp / (without stress)
jumper / ‘dʒʌm pər / (with stress on first syllabels)
More example :
TEACHer / ‘ti: tʃə(r) /, JaPAN / dʒə’pæn /,
ConverSATION / ,kɒnvə’seɪʃn /, Interesting / ‘ɪnrəstɪɳ /,
ImPORtant / ɪm’pɔ:tnt /
 One word has one primary stress
On word cannot have two or more primary stress. However, if there is
definitely the word is composed of two words.
Example :
Understand / ,ʌn də ‘stænd /
Positive / ‘pɒ zə tɪv /
From the first example there are two types of stress, namely
secondary and primary stress. The letter “Un” is not emphasized too
much, while the letter “Stand” is more stressed.
In the next example it only has one stress, namely the primary stress,
so only the word “Po” is emphasized.
 Word stress tips
Maybe a lot of some people think “ what’s the point of emphasizing the
word? It’s not too important either” but that’s wrong, the emphasis is very
important so that in your pronunciation you look more proficient.
If you’re still confused, i have some tips for you.
 The first, in nouns or adjectives the prefix is usually stressed.
Example :
Water / ‘wɔːtə(r) /
Mother / ‘mʌȪə(r) /
Ugly / ‘ʌgli /
Crazy / ‘kreɪzi /
 There are additional words such as
Employee / ɪm ‘plɔɪi: / on “ee” is stressed,
Engineer / ,endʒɪ’nɪə(r) / on “neer” is also emphasized.
 There is also every word ending with “Tion and Sion” it must be
pressed
Example :
Pronunciation / prə,nʌnsi,eɪʃn /
Reputation / ,repju’teɪʃn /
Communication / kə,mju:nɪ’keɪʃn /
Vision / ‘vɪʒn /

CONTRACTIONS

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh

Halo welcome with me Erlina Rahmawati, you can call me erlina or erlin. my student ID
number is 22332077. Here I will explain about my material, namely contractions.

29
In this lesson you can learn about the pronunciation of contractions. you'll see how to make
contractions, how to pronounce them and when to use contractions in english. What are
contractions, contractions are when we put two words together by making one word shorter.
For example he is he's, they will they'll, do not don't. But which words can you make
contractions from.
Here are the words that can make contractions in english.
am
are
is
will
would
have
has
had.
Let's see an example in a sentence.
"you are the nicest person i have ever met"We can make two contraction here. Can you
see where you can contract? you are to you're and i have to i've
"you're the nicest person i've ever met"the pronounciatiom of contractions can change
depending on how fast you're speaking. The pronounciation can be quite clear and textbook
"you're the nicest person i've met"or the pronounciation can be faster and weaker "you're the
nicest person i've met"
This fast we pronounciation is very common.
Let's do another example "They will think he has gone completely mad!"can you see
where we can make contractions? here's the answer They'll think he's gone completely
mad. Many english learners find contractions with will difficult to pronounce.
Let's practice quickly, say (they'll) as you pronounce the vowel eh, slide your tongue forward
to add the oo sound. deil. deil. Now try the full sentence "they'll think he's gone completely
mad"
Most contractions have two different pronunciations. The only Contractions which never
change are will and am. Contractions of will are always pronounce el, am is always em.
Contractions of are is would have has and had can have different pronunciations.
Why does the pronunciation change? it mostly depends on the sound before the contractions.
Sometimes it depens on the sound after the contraction. For would have and had it depens
wether the sound before the contraction is a vowel or a consonant.
The contractions of has is pronounced veh after a vowel sound (i've we've they've) after a
consonant the contraction of have us pronounced "ev"kudev wudev maidev.

30
The same rule is true for would and had, the contraction is pronounced d after a vowel and ed
after a consonant.
i'd
she'd
it'd
tom'd
There's someone exception to this if someon's name ends with a vowel sounds we usually
treat it like a consonant for contractions. So if you want to say "Shopie'd help you if you
asked her"even though Sophie ends with a vowel sound we generally pronounce the
contraction as ed because it' a name.
Notice how u said usually and generally it's because this isn't exacly a rule, it's more common
and i advise you to follow it but not all native speakers speak this way all the time.

HOW TO USE CONTRACTIONS

Generally you should use contractions when you speak using contractions sounds more
natural in spoken English. Look at example for earlier "He does not understand why they
did not help him". If you're speaking to someone and you say this sentence without the
contraction it sounds a bit robotic and unnatural. try it say the sentence out loud with no
contractions. Doesn't it sound a bit strange . Pronouncing the contractions makes it sound
much more natural "He doesn't understand why they didn't help him"looks different
right?
okay, so here are some things I can say about contractions material. sorry if there are spelling
mistakes and some other mistakes, because I'm also learning. Thank you, until we meet again
and

SCRIPT PRONUNCIATION

Hey everyone. I'm Dinda in this English lesson. We are going to study the pronunciation of S
endings. So simply word ending in S are so common in English verbs can end in S plular. So
it's very important that you know, how to pronounce the S at the end of this word. And there

33
are three ways that the S can be pronounced. But how do we know when to use this sound? Is
there a rule?
Well, firstly, we have to look at the sound that comes right before the S.So let's remove the
sound to find out. We have, like, come, stop, laughs, fun sport, time and bath. Are all
unvoiced consonants.
English has voiced and unvoiced consonants with unvoiced consonants, you don't use your
vocal cords. So if you touch your throat and say the sounds you don't feel any vibration at all.
So the rule is, you need to use the sound for words that end in an unvoiced consonant.
For exemple:Likes stops laughs Sports baths. Now let's take a look at the IZ ending sound.
For example, dogs, words loves dreams and sings these words all IZ with the ending sound
but but why what's the rule here again?Again, we need to look at the sound right before the Z,
so, let's remove that and see what we have.these are all examples of Rights. They are voiced
consonants.
Voiced Consonants, use your vocal cords in your throat. So if you put your fingers to your
throat and say a voiced consonant, you can feel it vibrate. Got done. Mmm.So the rule is, you
need to use the sound for words that end in a voiced consonant ,For example :dogs words.
Love's dreams sings fans, feels where's jobs.
There's one more thing with this ending sound all words ending in a vowel also use the sound
for us. For example, plays trees toes. The third one IZ ,This is ending sound it's represented
by the ES spelling. So that makes it much easier to identify and to know when to use this

.minimal pairs is two words that vary by only a single sound, and this usually confuse
learners,like the following example

36
Fan-van

Desk-disk

So you see two words that are pronounced almost in the same way,but they have one sound
that makes them different.the sound can be a vowel or a consonant.these pairs have nothing
to do with spelling or meaning.the words sound similar but they actually do not mean the
same thing.minimal pairs often confuse English learnes.many English learners will replace
one word with another while speaking.but you know what, this will completely change the
meaning of the actual sentence.that’s why when we say the words incorrectly in our
conversation, this can cause miscommunication.however,if you learn minimal pairs really
improve your English pronunciation.practicing minimal pairs is a great way to become a
better English listener, and of course a better English speaker.try to listen to the sample
provided in this video.ok here are the list of sample minimal pairs.try to practice with these
sounds after you hear them.

8. Sesungguhnya orang-orang yang beriman dan mengerjakan kebajikan, mereka akan

mendapat surga-surga yang penuh kenikmatan,

8. Lo! those who believe and do good works, for them are the gardens of delight,

Hello guys, my name is Rizal

I am from English Education study program. Here I will explain material about joining words
2. So keep watching the video

When we say the spellings of words or names, we normally join them together in one
continuous sound. For example, we say ABC like this: /eɪbiːsiː/ (without any pause between
the letters). Sometimes we have to add an extra sound to separate vowel sound. Listen to
these examples. The added sound is in small letters.

EAR /iː jeiː ar/

AIM /eɪ jaɪ jem/
TORN /tɪː jəʊ wɑː ren/

The same three sounds, /r/, /j/, and /w/, are also added between whole words to separate
vowel sounds.

39
The consonant sound /r/ is used to separate vowel sounds when there is a letter R at the
end of the first word. In many accents of English, including Southern British, this final
letter R is not pronounced, so the word ends in a vowel sound. For example, the word
after is pronounced /aːftə/. But if the following word begins with a vowel sound, then R
is pronounced, in order to separate to two vowels. For example, the R is pronounced in
after eat /aːftə_riːd/. In this case, the R sounds like it is at the start of the next word, so
after eat sounds like after read. Listen to the examples.

R not pronounced R pronounced Sounds like

Her book Her age Her rage

Under mark Under eyes Under rise

After frist After eat After read

Four cart Four eel Four reel

Clear bird Career elephant Career relevant

The sounds /j/ and /w/ can also be pronunced to separate vowel sounds.

● If the first word ends in a vowel sound like /ɪ/ and the next word starts with any vowel
sound, we add the sound /j/ (Y).

● If the first word ends in a vowel sound like /uː/ or /ʊ/ and the next word starts with
any vowel sound, we add the sound /w/ (W).

Listen to the examples. Notice that /j/ or /w/ is pronounced even when there is no Y or
W in the spelling.

no/j/ or /w/pronounced /j/ or /w/ pronounced Sounds like

Every time /evrɪ taɪm/ enemy /evrɪ ˈenəmi/ Every yenemy

40
He said /hɪ sed/ He enters /hɪ ˈentə(r) / He yenters

Holla guyssss, nice to see you again in this video, i am Jian A'yuni from English education
department, i want to share to you materials about " pronouncing verb BE ".
< Intro >
You don’t normally put stress on, are in the middle of a sentence. Listen to this rhyme.
Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Flowers are nice,
And so are you !
Note: Many speakers pronounce are just as the weak vowel sound /ə/, but if the
following word begins with a vowel sound, the /r/ is pronounced too, for example People
are angry.
The word is (and ‘s) is not usually spoken as a separate syllable; it is usually joined to the
syllable before, for example Snow is/’s white. But if the word before ends with letter like S,
CE, GE and CH, it is a new syllable, for example Grass is green.

A. is and ‘s - not a separate syllable

Snow is white
Your hair is dirty
The road is closed
The clock is broken
B. is and ‘s – a separate syllable
Grass is green

42
Your face is dirty
The bridge is closed
My watch is broken

Note: After a pronoun am, is and are are usually written as contractions (‘m, ‘s, ‘re). In
the middle of a sentence, was and were are also usually unstressed. Listen to the chant.

She was first

You were last
It was hard
She was fast
You were slow
She was strong
I was tired
It was long

The verb be is normally unstressed at the start of the sentence too. Listen to this chant.
Am I right? Am I wrong?
Is it short? Is it long?
Are you hot? Are you cold?
Were they young? Were they old?
Is it false? Is it true?
Was it me? Was it you?

Note that the vowel is very weak in fast speech. am = /əm/; is = /ɪz/; are = /ə/; were =
/wə/; was = /wəz/. You do not need to copy the fast speech pronunciation. People will
understand you if you used careful speech. but you need to be able to understand fast
speech.
Note: The verb be is tressed in negative contractions (e.g. aren’t), and at the end of
sentences (e.g. Yes, I am).Note: the verb be is also stressed for emphasis or contrast, for
example: That can’t be John....Wait a minute ... It is John !

SURAH

َ‫ك هُ ُم ْال ُم ْفلِحُوْ ن‬

ِ ‫ف َويَ ْنهَوْ نَ َع ِن ْال ُم ْنك‬
‫َر ۗ َوا‬

Let there be a group among you who call ˹others˺ to goodness, encourage what is good, and forbid
what is evil—it is they who will be successful.

Artinya :

Dan hendaklah di antara kamu ada segolongan orang yang menyeru kepada kebajikan, menyuruh
(berbuat) yang makruf, dan mencegah dari yang mungkar. Dan mereka itulah orang-orang yang
beruntung.

Stress in longer words 1

So before we talking about stress in longer words and the example, let me explain about
stress words first. If a word has more than one syllable, you give stress to one of the syllables.
To give it stress, do one or more of these to the syllable, just make it longer, make it louder,
make it higher. For the example,
ba Na na, this is stress
Now talking about stress in longer words 1, we can build longer words by adding parts to the
beginning or end of shorter words. Usually, this does not change the stress: it stays on the
same syallble as in the original word. Look at yhe example bellow

Here is a list of beginnings and endings which do not change the stress of the shorter word.
-able (drinkable) -in/im- (impossible) -ness (happiness)
-al (musical) -ise (civilise) -ship (friendship)
-er (player) -ish (childish) un- (unhappy)
-ful (helpful) -less (childless) -under (underplay)
-hood (childhood) -ly (friendly)
-ing (boring) -ment (employment)

45
Some endings do change the stress in the sorter word. Look how the ending –ion changes the
stress in the word educate

When we add the endings –ion or –ian, the stress always moves to the syllable before these
endings. Let's see the video for examples this one.
Information, discussion, politican
Can you think of three more words like this?
There are many, but here are three more suggestions:
situation, revision, electrician.
The same rule is true for words ending -ic:The ending –ic also moves the stress to the syllable
before it. Listen to these examples.
economic, dramatic, atlantic, scientific.

55
Hi guys, welcome back with me

I am Ega Farrel ,you can call me ega

I am from English Education Department with student number 22332062.

So in here, I want to tell you about vowels

First, let me tell you what is vowels

Vowels are one of the two groups of letters in the English alphabet. The other group is
consonants. There are five different vowel letters: 'a', 'e', 'i', 'o' and 'u'. Vowels are very
common in the English language as they can be found in almost every word and syllable.

Vowel letters are one of the two types of letters in the English alphabet. The other type are
called consonants and they make up the majority of the letters in our language. Whether a
letter is classified as a vowel or consonant comes down to how we articulate the sound it
represents.

As we mentioned before, there are 5 different vowel letters in the English language. These
are 'a', 'e', 'i', 'o' and 'u'. In some cases, 'y' and 'w' can be considered vowels.

the sounds that the vowels make often fall into one of two main groups: short vowel sounds
and long vowel sounds. We can see the differences in these according to how they are
pronounced in certain words. See these examples:

● Words that contain short vowels include: bat, cat, bed, leg, but, bug, bog, hip,
pop and sip.
● Words that contain long vowels include: haze, he, she, hope, human, cute and
equal.

Let’s take a look at a few examples of words that contain one or more vowels:

apple

In this simple example, we can see that it contains the vowels ‘a’ and ‘e’. Note that
when we pronounce the word ‘apple’, we tend to stress the ‘a’ in the first syllable but
not the ‘e’ at the end of the second syllable. This unstressed ‘e’ is an example of vowel
reduction.

Why are 'w' and 'y' sometimes considered vowels?

Earlier on, we mentioned that ‘w’ and ‘y’ are sometimes considered to be vowel letters. But
how come?

56
That’s because both 'w' and 'y' are what we call semi-vowels. These are letters that are
sometimes vowels, but sometimes aren’t. It all depends on the situation. To help us make
sense of this, let’s look at some examples.

The letter ‘y’ is considered a semi-vowel when it’s placed at the end or middle of a word or
syllable, or that word has no other vowels. For example:

● early
● candy
● backyard
● gym

Vowels and consonants are both speech sounds. Speech sounds existed in speech
before letters were used to record the sounds in writing. Because the English language
is partly based on the Roman language which only had the five vowel letters ‘a’, ‘e’,
‘i’, ‘o’ and ‘u’, over time, we have combined vowels and consonants or pairs of
consonants to make digraphs or trigraphs to represent all of the sounds.

And for this reason, vowels are also the starting place for teaching children how to read
and write. Once children have mastered vowels, they’ll be able to recognise patterns in
words and read and write with greater ease.

Well i think that's all that I can explain about vowels

Thank you for your attention, and see you!!

NIM : 22332067

Hi guys! welcome back with me.

I am Ryan Achmad Maulana, you can call me ryan.

I am from English Education Department with student number 22332067.

So in here, I want to tell you about past tense endings.

Past tense endings have two kinds of pronunciation

there are voiced and voiceless.

First, -ed becomes /t/ following voiceless consonants

Voiceless consonants in English include: /f/, /k/, /p/, /s/

the -ed ending is pronounced with the voiceless sound /t/. The reason for this is that it is
natural (i.e., easier to pronounce) for a voiceless sound to follow another voiceless sound.

I will give simple examples for you to easy to know it

1. looked
2. stopped
3. watched
4. finished
5. danced

Okay, the second is -ed becomes /d/ following voiced sounds

Voiced (also called loud) consonants and vowels refer to sounds that make your vocal cords
vibrate. If you put your hand to your throat when you pronounce these sounds, you will feel a
vibration. These sounds are all loud—you can hear the noise they make.

Voiced consonants in English include: /b/, /dʒ/

the -ed ending is pronounced with the voiced sound /d/. The reason for this is that it is natural
(i.e., easier to pronounce) for a voiced sound to follow another voiced sound.

okay for the voiced sounds for past tense endings ,simple examples like this:

59
1. listened
2. preferred
3. cried
4. smiled
5. studied

And the last here some simple sentence for make sure you clear with the material

there are like:

She looked round first

The driver cried

He never guessed

She’d pass the test.

Well i think that's all that I can explain about past tense endings

Thank you for your attention, and see you!!
