WEEK 5: PERFROMANCE TASK NO.2

TYPES OF COLLISIONS
I. Objectives:
A. describe the different types of collisions; and
B. solve problems involving collisions (elastic, inelastic, and perfectly inelastic).
II. Materials: pen, paper, and calculator
III. Procedures:
1. Study the figure below that shows the different types of collisions. Figure 1: Elastic collisions. (a)
moving objects collides the with a stationary object (b) two moving objects collide head-on (c) two
objects moving in the same direction collide. In this type of collision, the momentum and kinetic energy
before and after collisions of the system does not change or conserve.

c.

Figure 2: Inelastic collision. In this type of collision, the momentum of the system is conserved but the
kinetic energy of the system changes or not conserved. Objects that stick together after collision is said to
be perfectly inelastic.

2. To identify the collision as being elastic, inelastic or perfectly inelastic using the equation
below:
● To verify if momentum of the system before and after collisions is conserved, use
the equation below:
pBC=¿ ¿ p AC
m1v1 + m2v2 = m1v1' + m1v2'
● To verify if kinetic energy of the system before and after collisions is conserved, use
the equation below:
K. E .BC = K. E . AC
K. E .BC = 0.5 [m1 (v1 ¿ ¿2 + m2 (v2 ¿ ¿2 ]
K. E . AC =0.5 [m1 (v1 ' ¿ ¿2 + m2 (v2 ' ¿ ¿2 ]
3. Solve the momentum and kinetic energy before and after collision. Encircle your final answer. (Show your complete
solution).
