EL-OPS-WI-011 Crate - Packing and Shipping Instruction
EL-OPS-WI-011 Crate - Packing and Shipping Instruction
1. INTRODUCTION
This document defines the minimum requirements for Packing, Marking, Material Storage
and Handling of materials and equipment to ensure that they arrive at the delivery
destination site in the same condition as they were following Elmac internal checks and any
client third party final inspections where applicable at Elmac manufacturing location.
European Parliament and Directive 94/62/EC for packaging and packaging waste.
International Import and Export Regulations ISPM 15.
All crates made in house will include a permanent stamp as detailed below, approx. size
150x70mm. Any crates made off-site will also demonstrate a similar size IPPC stamp with
full tractability.
3. GENERAL DETAILS
Elmac Technologies Limited (ETL) will pack all purchase orders separately.
Numbers of crates and actual dimensions will not be generated or confirmed until full
fabrication of equipment is complete.
Where applicable, ETL shall allow for the requirements of both exporting and destination
country rules and regulations and all relevant Inspection Agencies. These requirements are
specifically focussed towards avoidance of deterioration of the goods during shipment and
storage at site following final inspection at Elmac manufacturing location.
ETL will take all appropriate safety measures at all times and will at least achieve the
minimum requirements of appropriate legislation. ETL has internal standards and
procedures in place for achieving these objectives.
ETL will ensure compliance with the relevant packaging regulations which are applicable to
the business.
ETL will minimise packaging weight and volume and use minimum packaging required for
safety, protection and preservation. Packing materials that can be recovered will be used,
where possible.
If the Purchaser believes that there is any conflict with their own proposal for preservation or
packing or that there are any ambiguities or doubts regarding the interpretation or intention
of any part of this procedure, they should immediately communicate this in writing to ETL.
4. PACKING
ETL will determine the necessary preparation to guarantee proper protection of goods for
conditions which will be subject to the shipment.
Packaging for shipment will be generally as per ETL standards. The forces imposed on
packages during transit and handling, and the environmental conditions encountered during
storage, shall be considered in the design of the equipment and in the selection of packaging
methods.
ETL will ensure that the packaging method selected will adequately protect the equipment
during transit and ensure that components do not move around during transit.
Packages will comply with standard BS 1133 Section 8 crate specification for export packing
and comply with EU directive 94/62/EC, generally as follows:-
a) All crates and all wood products, such as bracing, dunnage, etc. will be built using
softwood timber specially grown in purpose managed renewable plantations all
compliant with the UK wood marking programme and ISPM 15.
e) Internal bracing shall be incorporated where required to ensure materials inside the
crate(s) will be securely braced to prevent movement.
f) All crates will be waterproofed and fully lined to prevent water damage. As an
additional precaution for long term storage, “Silica Gel” will be inserted within lined
crates (not within the equipment).
g) Packing materials will not include wood fibre, sawdust, straw, shredded paper, or
other organic materials. No straw, hay, shredded paper or similar materials will be
used.
Refer to ‘Typical Solid Wooden Crate Configuration’ as follows for general guidance on solid
crate details used for packing Valves and other associated equipment of a similar nature.

All units to remain in their transit crates, ideally in a dry indoor facility until required for use.
Upon receipt at the receiving site, crate packages shall be opened by the receiver to
examine for damage and to check quantities, etc.
During the unpacking of the goods according to procedure the user must remove units
without damage to the equipment surface finish. User to ensure all flanges, bolt, nuts and
flange protectors are left in place until installation of the equipment takes place.
Packing list will be supplied with each crate and will contain the following information as a
minimum:-
Packing list will be placed in a waterproof pouch, securely fastened and clearly visible on the
outside of the package(s).
7. MARKINGS
