Procedure for Ferrite Testing
1.0 SCOPE
This procedure covers the calibration and operating methods for the Fisher Feritscope MP30,
used for the determination of Ferrite Content of Stainless Steels, Clad materials and
Duplex Stainless Steels.
Determination of the ferrite content is based on a magnetic method, which makes use of the
difference in magnetic permeability, as a function of the percentage ferrite present.
2.0 PERSONNEL
All personnel shall have received ‘in house training’ in the use of the equipment, due to
there being no Nationally recognised qualification scheme.
3.0 EQUIPMENT
All work shall be carried out to this procedure and in accordance with the Health and Safety at
Work Act 1974, and any local requirements.
Personal Protective Equipment is to be worn as specified by the Company Health & Safety
Policy.
Calibrate the equipment by verifying the instruments readout against the supplied sets of
reference Standards figures.
If after calibration the readout differs by more than 5%, the instrument must be recalibrated
(see manufacturers handbook).

Procedure for Ferrite Testing
This test procedure shall be followed for all testing conducted using the Fisher
Feritscope MP30, after the above set up procedure. All parts under examination shall be
within the range of -10°c to 40°c.
9.0 TESTING
Connect the probe to the top of the unit, and secure by rotating the knurled knob. Press
the ON/OFF button once and wait for the unit to complete its self -test. (always
ensure the probe is connected prior to turn on)
Select application number 1 (APPL No), the unit is now ready for use.
After the measurement has been taken, an audible ‘beep’ will be heard, lift the probe
from the surface (minimum of 10mm)
Take another reading by repeating the above step until the required amount of
readings have been taken.
The data stored in the instrument memory can be displayed at any time by pressing
the ‘BATCH-RES’ key.
(Erroneous measurements can be deleted by pressing the ‘DEL’ key after the
measurement has been taken)
Information such as the mean value, standard deviation etc… can be viewed by
pressing the ‘BATCH-RES’ key a number of times as listed below
A new batch of data is automatically started after the results have been reviewed
(Using the ‘FINAL-RES’ key shows results of all batches at once. The memory is
automatically cleared when a new measurement is taken after viewing these results)
When all testing is completed and logged, press the ‘ON/OFF’ key once the unit will
now turn off and all memorised data will be cleared.

(correction factors can be found in the manufacturers handbook)
11.0 REPORTING
All results shall be recorded on a standard Alliance report format and as a minimum
shall contain the following:
• Customer
• Project
• Date of test
• Items under examination
• Procedure reference
• Material specification
• Equipment details
• Name and signature of technician
