Implementation of these Installation, Operation and Maintenance Instructions will ensure the separator's most efficient and dependable performance. Warning Suspended electro-magnetic separators with self-cleaning belts are normally installed above conveyor belts in safe areas away from all operatives. Location of the separator is the responsibility of the customer. Eriez will advise on location if asked. Additional guarding can be provided at the customer's request. Suspended electro-magnetic separators with self-cleaning belts have pinch points where the belt travels over the pulleys; these can create a hazard when the self- cleaning gear is operating. Operators should not carry out maintenance on this equipment unless the power supply is switched off. When either a self-cleaning or manual-cleaning electro-magnetic separator is energised, operators should be aware there is a strong magnetic field in the area between the conveyor and the magnet face and take the necessary precautions when handling ferrous material in the vicinity. Tramp iron may be attracted suddenly and unexpectedly to the magnet surface with the possibility of finger or limb entrapment, resulting in injury. Warning Plates, Caution Plates and Safety labels on the separator must not be removed or painted over. It is important these warnings and cautions are legible and complied with, Magneti parators Persons wearing a cardiac pacemaker must maintain a minimum safety distance of 5m from the magnet so as not to interfere with proper functioning of. the pacemaker. The corresponding area shall be marked with warning labels. SE GB Page 3 Installation, Operation & Maintenance Instructions - Suspended Electro - Magnetic Sep Section 2 WARNING THIS EQUIPMENT CONTAINS MAGNETISED MATERIAL AND MUST BE TREATED WITH UTMOST CAUTION TO SAFEGUARD AGAINST INJURY. SE GB Do not allow the pole faces to face each other. Opposite polarity poles will come together with considerable force. Before handling this equipment personnel with pacemakers or implants should confirm that their implants are not affected by magnetism. If in doubt do not approach within 3m radius of the magnet. Take care when using ferrous tools or ferrous parts near the magnet as they can be attracted to the magnet with considerable force. Do not place pre-recorded tapes, computer disks, or credit cards near the magnet box since this could cause erasure. Keep all delicate mechanisms, such as mechanical watches, away from the magnet. Do not drill or weld near the magnetic unit without first seeking the advice of: ERIEZ MAGNETICS EUROPE LIMITED Page 4 Installation, Operation & Maintenance Instructons - Suspended Electro - Magnetic Separators Section 3 GENERAL DESCRIPTION Suspended electro-magnetic separators are heavy-duty magnets comprising a solenoid coil or multiple coils of wire, usually cylindrical but sometimes elliptically wound, surrounding an iron core. A magnetic field is induced in the core by passing a de current through the coils, thereby creating an effect similar to a permanent magnet having one North pole and one South pole. Electro-magnetic separators are designed for use over a moving bed of material from which iron is to be removed Eriez produce two types of separator, oil-cooled and air-cooled, both of which are available as manual-cleaning or self-cleaning units (see illustrations on the following Pages). Manual-cleaning separators are designed for use where small amounts of tramp iron may be present. They can be supplied with an adjustable cable sling designed for a one-point suspension. It is necessary with manual-cleaning separators to switch off the power periodically and discharge the accumulated tramp iron Manual-cleaning units may be installed over the head pulley or over the conveyor. A self-cleaning separator is essentially a manual-cleaning unit with a belt conveyor surrounding it to provide automatic discharge of tramp iron. These separators can be supplied with tumbuckles for four-point suspension and can be used over the head pulley or over the conveyor. SE GB Page 5 Installation, Operation & Maintenance Instuctons - Suspended Electro - Magnetic Separators MAGNET POSITIONS Position 4 (in-Line) The preferred installation of a suspended electro-magnetic separator is over the trajectory of material discharged from the belt conveyor. This is referred to as POSITION 4 (see Figs. 1 and 2). For optimum separation in Position 1 installations, provision must be made to adjust the location of the unit to suit the trajectory of the material. Separation efficiency will be improved by using a non-magnetic head pulley in Po: (nominal). ion 1 installations when the conveyor belt speed is less than 100m/min. Figure 1 Manual - Cleaning Position 4 SE GB Page 6 Installation, Operation & Maintenance Instructons - Suspended Electro - Magnetic Separators When installing a self-cleaning unit, ensure there is adequate clearance for the separator belt to operate and that provisions have been made to collect the discharged tramp iron. A hinged non-magnetic splitter, adjustable in length, will be required to prevent extracted tramp iron from re-entering the product. The unit is positioned so that the bottom surface of the separator belt is approximately 50mm from the trajectory of the discharged material. The centreline of the magnet should be approximately perpendicular to the material at that point (refer to Fig.2). Figure 2 Self - Cleaning Position 1 SE GB Page 7 Installation, Operation & Maintenance instructions - Suspended Electro - Magnetic Separators Position 2 (Cross-belt) Installation of the separator at right angles to the moving bed of material is referred to as POSITION 2 (see Figs. 3 and 4). The separation efficiency in Position 2 is not as good as Position 4 Position 2 mounting is generally not recommended where conveyor belt speed is in excess of a nominal 100 m/mm. In Position 2 installations, steel conveyor idlers cannot be used in the immediate vicinity beneath the separator. Any conveyor idlers beneath the separator must be constructed of non-magnetic material. Manual-cleaning and self-cleaning units should be installed on the centreline and parallel to the slope of the material conveyor. Figure 3 Parallel Manual - Cleaning Position 2 SE GB Page 8 Installation, Operation & Maintenance Instructions - Suspended Electro - Magnetic Separators « Figure 4 Self - Cleaning Position 2 Separators with permanent magnet extensions (Used when the ferrous discharge point is a long way from the product). The self-cleaning belt should lightly touch the outer comer of the electro-magnet and the outer comer of the permanent magnet extension (see Fig. 6). The amount of sag in the middle of the belt will vary. A sag of 25 to 50mm is common on the small units and 50 to 75mm on the larger units. Figure 5 eeeeapamaeeeen] O} Belt sag Points of contact SE GB Page 9 Intatation, Operation & Maintenance instructions - Suspended Electro - Magnetic Separators Section 4 INSTALLATION CAUTION All Models + Care must be taken when uncrating the unit to avoid damage to the equipment. + Before switching on, inspect the area and remove all magnetic material within the vicinity of the magnet face (bottom plate). + Ensure the main frame is visibly square and is not twisted. Oil-cooled Models + Ensure the oil expansion tank is at right angles to the direction of material flow and situated at the top if the separator is set at an angle. * Operate the pressure relief valve, located on the end of the expansion tank, by pulling the stem and releasing it. The valve is spring-loaded and will re-seat itself. Self - Cleaning Magnet Belt Suspension Height Product Conveyor Belt SE GB Page 10 Instaiavon, Operation & Maintenance instructions - Suspended Electo - Magnetic Separators SUSPENSION HEIGHT The separator is designed for a maximum suspension height. This distance (see sketch) is measured from the magnet face (bottom plate) to the top of the product conveyor belt. For actual suspension height, the separator should be lowered as close to the burden as practical. A clearance of 75mm between the self-cleaning belt and the top of the burden should be maintained; this clearance can be reduced to 50mm between the magnet bottom plate and the top of the burden for manual-cleaning units. BURDEN DEPTH Separator performance can be maximised by controlling the burden depth. A leveller, positioned above the conveyor and before the separator, will remove high spots caused by surges in the burden feed when the separator is installed in Position 2. The recommended installation location for Position 1 is calculated on tonnage (refer to the general arrangement drawing). Any variation from. this throughput will change the trajectory of the burden with respect to the working surface of the magnet and could result in poor separation. If sufficient application data is available, Eriez can prepare an installation drawing showing the separator location to provide optimum tramp iron removal. Without this information the following guidelines should be observed. SE GB Page 11 Installation, Operation & Maintenance insuctions ~ Suspended Electo - Magnetic Separators Po: Determine the highest point of the material trajectory and position the separator, if fitted with self-cleaning belt, so that the bottom surface of the belt is 50mm - 75mm. above the material on the conveyor and the magnet centreline passes through the high point of the trajectory (see Fig. 6). For manual cleaning separators the distance is measured from the magnet bottom plate. NOTE: The magnet angle with respect to the horizontal is best within the range 15° to 25°. As product belt speed increases, the angle of the magnet will decrease due ion 1 mounting (Separator over the conveyor head pulley). to product trajectory change. Figure 6 Clearance SE GB Page 12 Instataton, Operation & Maintenance Instructions ~ Suspended Electro - Megnetic Separators In cases where conveyor belt speeds are less than 100 m/minute (nominal) the ‘trajectory of the product material will be approximately level with the top of the pulley and will follow the pulley periphery. When operating with these conditions the magnet centreline should pass through the centre of the pulley (see Fig. 7). A head pulley of non-magnetic material (series 300 stainless steel) may be required to avoid magnetic induction. Figure 7 SE GB Page 13 Installation, Operation & Maintenance instructions ~ Suspended Electro - Magnetic Separators Position 2 mounting - (Separator across the conveyor belt). Position the separator so that the magnet is centred over the width of the conveyor with the face (bottom plate) parallel to the slope of the conveyor. When installing a self-cleaning separator over a troughed conveyor belt, the separator must be high enough so that tramp iron attracted to the surface of the separator belt will clear the outer edge of the conveyor belt. The rated suspension height of the separator must not be exceeded (see Fig. 8). Figure 8 er) Susfension Height a Parallel OIL-COOLED MODELS Caution: After installation and prior to start-up, check the oil level at the plug located on the side corner of the magnet near the expansion tank. If the level is low, add oil of the type specified on the general arrangement drawing supplied with the contract documentation. WIRING: Refer to the wiring diagram. Caution: Do not attempt to turn the terminal posts. This could result in damage to the internal coil connections. Figure 9 Rectifier * 3 Phase supply ELECTRO- MAGNET SE GB Page 14 Inetallation, Operation & Maintenance Instructions - Suspended Electro - Magnetic Separators Section 5 OPERATION STARTING UP SELF-CLEANING UNITS Belt Direction + After installing the separator, momentarily close the belt drive switch and establish that the belt direction is correct. if direction is incorrect, interchange two phases of the 3-phase supply. Belt Tension + The smaller suspended electro-magnetic separators utilise a two-pulley design. The tail pulley has approximately 150mm of take-up available for belt stretch and tracking adjustment. To set the tension on the belt the screws either side of the pulley should be adjusted evenly until the desired slack in the belt is achieved, 25mm to 50mm. + The larger units have a four-pulley design and have four take-up adjustments. The bottom tail pulley should be adjusted only for belt tension, in the same way as for the two pulley magnetic separators. The slack in the belt for the larger units should be between 50mm to 75mms. SE GB Page 15 Installation, Operation & Maintenance instructions - Suspended Electro - Magnetic Separators Belt Tracking SE GB + Note: When switching the belt on before it has been tracked, be ready to switch off immediately should it suddenly wander to one side. Never start the belt drive and allow it to run continuously until it has been fully tracked. Switch on the self-cleaning belt and establish if it is running centrally on the pulleys. If the belt is seen to wander to one side, switch off and proceed as follows. (a) To adjust the tracking on separators with a two-pulley system, the tail pulley belt tensioner, on the same side to which the belt is seen to wander, should be tightened. After tracking the belt, it may be necessary to readjust the tension. (b) Tracking the larger units with a four-pulley system is achieved by adjusting the small pulley immediately above the belt tension pulley. Tighten the tensioner on the same side to which the belt is seen to wander. After tracking the belt, it may be necessary to re-adjust the tension, Page 16 Installation, Operation & Maintenance Instructions - Suspended Electro - Magnetic Separators Section 6 MAINTENANCE Air-Cooled Manual-Cleaning Separators + No maintenance, other than periodic removal of tramp iron, is required for aircooled Manual-Cleaning Separators. Oil-Cooled Manual-Cleaning Separators + The oil level should be checked periodically when magnet is cold. If the oil level is low, fil as required to the lower line on the site gauge with the same brand and type as indicated on the general arrangement drawing. Do not attempt to mix brands or types since they may not be compatible. When hot the oil level may expand above the top level on the oil gauge. Ensure the expansion tank pressure relief valve is free. This should be checked frequently. + Caution: The relief valve may release hot oil Self-Cleaning Separators + Lubricate bearings on a 3 monthly schedule. Do not over grease. + Belt tension and tracking is vital to trouble-free operation (self-cleaning systems) and both should be checked frequently. Refer to ‘OPERATION’ for adjustment procedure. NOTE: The magnet box normal surface operating temperature for Eriez Electro- Magnetic Separators is approximately 60°C above ambient. SE GB Page 17 Installation, Operation & Maintenance instuctions ~ Suspended Electro - Magnetic Separators Section 7 TROUBLE SHOOTING General Self-cleaning separators - stop the belt before trouble shooting, performance checks or maintenance.
