Symptoms of monkeypox (mpox) can include a rash, fever, chills, muscle aches, backache, swollen

Gregoris is 100 years old and, aside from appendicitis, has never known a day of illness in his life. He
has short-cropped white hair, a robustly handsome face and a bone-crushing handshake. He is known at

uneven, sloping terrain. Not many people half his age manage that. In Ikaria, a Greek island in the
Mediterranean, such characters are not exceptional. With its beautiful caves, rocky cliffs, and steep valleys,

on average 10 years longer than those in the rest of Europe and America - around one in three live into
their 90s.

What do its inhabitants know that the rest of us don't? Cardiologists found that the Ikarian diet, which has
been the subject of a number of scientific studies, features a lot of beans and not much meat or refined
sugar. The locals also feast on locally grown wild greens, which contain extremely high levels of
antioxidants, as well as potatoes and goat's milk. The Ikarians also drink a lot of herb tea and small
quantities of coffee, unlike some other areas in the country. In addition, and quite importantly, research
suggests the Ikarian habit of taking afternoon naps may help extend life.
Another important factor is that nearly everyone grows their own food and there is also a strong
tradition of solidarity among Ikarians, yet they are far from wealthy. Nearly all elderly Ikarians have a
story of suffering, though few are keen to tell it. After the Second World War, the locals were determined
not to become depressed and remained grateful that nothing worse happened to them. In terms of longevity,
it was a wise stance. Family is a vital part of Ikarian culture and every old person I visited has children
and grandchildren actively involved in their lives.
Just before taking my leave, I walk to a village and ask a number of men in their 90s and 100s if they
do any keep-fit exercise. The answer is always the same: "Yes, digging the earth," says one man, a 93-
year-old who looks 20 years younger. Each morning he goes out at 8 am to feed his animals and tend his
garden. "I've never thought about getting old," he says. “I feel good. I feel 93, but on Ikaria that's OK."
