FACIAL EMOTION DISCRIMINATION TASK (on CD-ROM)

READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS: “You will be seeing on the computer screen a series of 30
pairs of faces and your task is to determine whether the two people in each pair are displaying the SAME
or DIFFERENT emotion on their faces (NOTE TO EXAMINER: HAND INDEX CARD WITH “SAME”
AND “DIFFERENT” WRITTEN ON IT TO THE SUBJECT).

Please indicate your choice by stating out loud whether the pairs of faces are showing the “SAME” or
“DIFFERENT” emotion on their faces. You will have 15 seconds to make your response. Once you give
your answer, we will go on to the next pair of faces. We can’t go back to face pairs you’ve seen already
or pause the faces for longer than 15 seconds.

For each pair of faces, ask: Are these faces expressing the same or different emotion?
