With everything that is happening in around us, especially this pandemic every

person longs for psycho-social support—most especially children. Knowing that

there’s someone supporting you goes a long way. It boosts the morale of the person
and more importantly gives hope.
Psycho-social support is a term that is widely used, but frequently not understood.
‘Psycho’ refers to the inner world of a person – their thoughts, feelings, and
emotions – while ‘social’ relates to the external world and environment of the
person, and the relationships they have with this. Psycho-social support work
therefore focuses on the aspects of an environment or situation which impact on
both the social and psychological well-being of affected populations.
While psycho-social support can be achieved via specific targeted activities and
programs, it is important to understand that all interactions with children have the
potential to be psychosocially supportive. For example, respecting children,
showing a positive attitude towards them and valuing their presence are all ways of
helping to improve children’s self-confidence and self-esteem, and hence their
well-being.

Psycho-social support means working not only with children but also their parents,
the community, and other organizations to advocate for improved access to
community support and basic services.

Psycho-social support is important in the Learning process because it provides

suggestions of how educational planners and decision-makers can ensure a positive
learning environment for all. A positive psycho-social school environment helps to
create a conducive environment for effective teaching and learning.
