THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT (Part 1)

Gal 5:1  Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not ent
angled again with the yoke of bondage. 
Gal 5:2  Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. 
Gal 5:3  For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. 
Gal 5:4  Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen fr
om grace. 
Gal 5:5  For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. 
Gal 5:6  For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which w
orketh by love. 
Gal 5:7  Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? 
Gal 5:8  This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you. 
Gal 5:9  A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. 
Gal 5:10  I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that t
roubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be. 
Gal 5:11  And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offenc
e of the cross ceased. 
Gal 5:12  I would they were even cut off which trouble you. 
Gal 5:13  For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion t
o the flesh, but by love serve one another. 
Gal 5:14  For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 
Gal 5:15  But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. 
Gal 5:16  This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 
Gal 5:17  For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary t
he one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. 
Gal 5:18  But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. 
Gal 5:19  Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, la
sciviousness, 
Gal 5:20  Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 
Gal 5:21  Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I h
ave also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 
Gal 5:22  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 
Gal 5:23  Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 
Gal 5:24  And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 
Gal 5:25  If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 
Gal 5:26  Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

Mat 7:15  Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenin
g wolves. 
Mat 7:16  Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 
Mat 7:17  Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 
Mat 7:18  A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 
Mat 7:19  Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 
Mat 7:20  Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. 
Mat 7:21  Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he th
at doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 
Mat 7:22  Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy n
ame have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 
Mat 7:23  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. 
Mat 7:24  Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wi
se man, which built his house upon a rock: 
Mat 7:25  And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house;
and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. 
Mat 7:26  And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a
foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 
Mat 7:27  And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house;
and it fell: and great was the fall of it. 
Mat 7:28  And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his d
octrine: 
Mat 7:29  For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Joh 15:1  I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. 
Joh 15:2  Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit,
he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. 
Joh 15:3  Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. 
Joh 15:4  Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine;
no more can ye, except ye abide in me. 
Joh 15:5  I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth fort
h much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. 
Joh 15:6  If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them,
and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. 
Joh 15:7  If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done un
to you. 
Joh 15:8  Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. 
Joh 15:9  As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. 
Joh 15:10  If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's co
mmandments, and abide in his love. 
Joh 15:11  These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy mig
ht be full. 
Joh 15:12  This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. 
Joh 15:13  Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 
Joh 15:14  Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. 
Joh 15:15  Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I hav
e called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. 
Joh 15:16  Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and brin
g forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he
may give it you. 
Joh 15:17  These things I command you, that ye love one another. 
Joh 15:18  If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. 
Joh 15:19  If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, b
ut I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. 
Joh 15:20  Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they hav
e persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. 

Intro.:
- Galatians- we are called to live the life we have in Christ, showing the fruits (standing in the
liberty) Gal 5:1, 16
Gal 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free,
and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
Gal 5:16  This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of
the flesh. 
- Only not use our liberty for the occasion of the flesh v. 13
Gal 5:13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an
occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
- Mat 7- the good and corrupt tree and their fruit
- John 15- the necessity of abiding in God to bear fruit and please Him
- James- the fruit/manifestation of salvation in our lives is being challenged here
Look at James 2:17-18, “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being
alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy
faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.”

I. The principle of fruitbearing in the scriptures is consistent (Gal, Mat 7, Jn 15, Jas 2)
II. The ability to bear fruit depends solely on God- the husbandmand
Joh 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
Joh 15:2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that
beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
Joh 15:3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
Joh 15:4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide
in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
Joh 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same
bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Joh 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should
go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of
the Father in my name, he may give it you.

III. The inability to bear fruit always has consequences


Joh 15:6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men
gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

IV. The miracle and ministry of the fruit (by the Holy Spirit)
“ the fruit of the Spirit..is”
When God saved us, He performed a miracle. God the Holy Spirit began a work
in us and we became a New Creature.
Look at 2 Cor. 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature:
old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
We once bore BAD FRUIT, but now we bear GOOD FRUIT. THIS IS THE
MIRACLE OF THE FRUIT.

There is only one FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT, but it comes in nine delicious flavors. Look at
Galatians 5:22-23 again, we read, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance….”

Only the Holy Spirit can produce these fruit in our life.

The Holy Spirit can do IN US, FOR US, and THROUGH US, what we cannot do for
ourselves. He can take a sinner and save him by grace and produce beautiful fruit in his
life.

V. The manifestation of the fruit

Let’s look at these “Fruits” that we Christians are suppose to manifest.

If your life is filled with the same kind of fruit that the lost world is producing, it could be
because you have never been made a “New Creature”.

Look again at Galatians 5:19-21 and see if you recognize yourself. “Now the works of the
flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before,
as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the
kingdom of God.”

The fruit of the Spirit is none other than the Spirit of Christ manifesting the reality of
Christ in our lives! The Bible says, “GOD IS LOVE!”

A. LOVE
The first “Fruit of the Spirit” is LOVE. The lost world talks about love in a variety of
ways, such as:
• Affection love
• Sexual love
• Relationship love
• Romantic love
• Puppy love
• Friendship love
• Permanent love
• Infatuation love
• Passionate love

But the Bible teaches there is another love and it is called AGAPE LOVE. It is the purest
form of love. God is love; God is “AGAPE LOVE.”

When we talk about the LOVE that is the Fruit of the Spirit were talking about GOD’S
LOVE.
“ …love God with all thy heart, might, soul..( notice the difference)
(note: how the patriarchs, apostles and early Christians proved their love)

B. JOY
The one place that you should find JOY is within the church. Why? (check the lives of the
patriarchs, disciples, apostles, NT Christians, how they lived a joyful life)
• The people around us can have HAPPINESS because a lot of good things happen to
them.
• Only God can put JOY within a man’s heart.

Paul wrote to the church at Galatia about the Fruit of the Spirit in chapter 5. He asked a
very penetrating question in Galatians 4:15, “Where is then the blessedness ye spake
of?” In other words, he was saying, “What has happened to all your joy…”

SOME JOY BUSTERS


When the devil sees a church filled with JOYFUL CHRISTIANS, he will waste no time in
trying to rob them of their Joy. Why? Because he knows a church full of JOYFUL
CHRISTIANS CAN SET THE WORLD ON FIRE FOR THE LORD!

1. UNRESOLVED GUILT

Look at Romans 8:1, we read, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which
are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

Look at 1 Cor. 6:9-10, we read, “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the
kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor
effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor
drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.”

When God saves us, Paul says He does three things:


• He washes us with the precious blood of the Lord Jesus
• He sanctifies us and sets us apart to do His Work
• He justifies us as if we have never committed one sin

David committed some horrendous sins, such as; deception, lust, adultery and eventually
he was responsible for the murder of Uriah.

He felt enormous guilt over these sins. He wrestled with the guilt and finally came to God
in Psalms 51:12, and prayed, "Restore to me the joy of your salvation..."

He did not lose his SALVATION, but he did lose his JOY. He prayed, Lord, “RESTORE TO
ME THE JOY OF YOUR SALVATION.”

2. A WOUNDED EGO

We men are known for our egos! When we have a large ego, it simply means we have a
high opinion of ourselves that others do not share.

In Romans 12:3, we read, “For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man
that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to
think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.”

The Lord desires that His people take Him seriously, but that they not take themselves
too seriously.

He wants them to wipe off their grim looks, put smiles on their faces, and let laughter
flow from their lips.
No church will ever be effective in reaching the lost until they have the JOY OF THEIR
SALVATION.
IT IS SIMPLY AN INNER JOY that comes from within and is reflected in the faces of God’s
People, whether they are in church or out of church.

SOME JOY BUILDERS

A. RECOGNIZE GOD AS JOYFUL

Many have unscriptural views of God. That is, they think of God as sitting on His throne
with a frown on his face and ready to destroy anyone that crosses Him.

One of the Joy builders in life is to RECOGNIZE THAT GOD IS A GOD OF JOY. Also,
another joy builder is:

B. REAFFIRM YOUR COMMITMENT TO OTHERS

Illus: You may have heard the acrostic for JOY:


• J - Jesus First
• O - Others Second
• Y- You Last

When a person lives a life like that, they are going to begin to bear the fruit of the spirit.
There will be JOY in their life.
• The first joy builder is vertical, and has to do with how we view God.
• The second joy builder is horizontal, and has to do with how we view each other.

Many folks could have more joy in their lives if they could learn to treat others the way
the Bible teaches we should treat others.

Ephesians 4:32 teaches; “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one
another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.”

Notice, this verse of scripture says we are to treat each other with kindness. Kindness is
always something that stands out.

C. Peace

The Bible teaches that there is a peace that the lost world provides. That is, the world
in which we live provides a certain kind of peace.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all the nations were at PEACE with each other? But that is
not the case.
God puts within our hearts a PEACE that flows like a river.

The Lord said, in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as
the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be
afraid.”

This is why He says, in Isaiah 1:18, “Come now, and let us reason together, says the
Lord, though your sins are as scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are
red like crimson, they will be like wool.”

It is a wonderful thing to have PEACE WITH GOD. God gives us a PEACE WITH GOD.
But also he provides us with-

- PEACE WITH OTHERS

One of the greatest changes that we can see in a man’s life after he is saved is his
attitude toward others. That is:
• I can’t look into a man’s heart and see if he has peace with God.
• I can’t look into a man’s heart and see if he has peace with himself.
• But I can look at a man’s life and see if he has PEACE WITH OTHERS.

Once we come to know the Lord, we want to live at PEACE with others.

In Romans 12:18, we read, “If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably
with all men.”

In other words, we should go the second mile to live at PEACE WITH OTHERS.

We can’t make everyone be at PEACE with us, but we make every effort to achieve this
even if it means walking the second mile.

When we have PEACE WITH GOD and PEACE WITH OTHERS, we can have PEACE
WITH OURSELVES.

All Christians at one time were the enemies of God.

- PEACE WITH OURSELVES

Many are trying to have PEACE when they do not know the PRINCE OF PEACE. Many
are trying to have PEACE when they are not willing to live at peace with others.

It is only when we have PEACE WITH GOD and PEACE WITH OTHERS, that we can
have PEACE WITH OURSELVES.

The Holy Spirit within can provide the PEACE that you are looking for. He wants you to
bear the fruit of PEACE.
