Diversity Issues in the School Setting.

There are bound to be students from different backgrounds, nationalities, and races in any school

setting. The presence of immigrant students in a school calls for extra programs to cater to their

more extensive needs like that of the language barrier. With the reduction in manufacturing jobs

and introduction to new technologies, manual labor jobs after school completion are reduced

(Shapiro & Stefkovich, 2016). Therefore, this necessitates extra training to keep up with the

times and to have a good grasp of the English language to better communicate. However, some

schools are not adequately equipped to ensure this. Leadership and decision-making in these

schools should be ethical to ensure all students have an equal opportunity of employment after

school.

Ethics to be considered in such a setting include that of justice, critique, and care (Shapiro &

Stefkovich, 2016). In matters of justice, it should be considered not as a rule but rather a moral

principle. When oppressive laws are put in place like those of wrongful deportation or delaying

citizenship for those who qualify, it is crucial to use one’s moral principle to challenge these

laws.

Moreover, the paradigm of critique comes in when people are forced to ask difficult questions

which make people uncomfortable. Asking who are the lawmakers and whose voices are

silenced is critical (Shapiro & Stefkovich, 2016). In this instance, one needs to ask themselves

whether it is right to deny immigrants a chance to learn proper English just because of the fear

that they may end up being more qualified for jobs.

On the paradigm of care, ethicist Noddings states that care should surpass achievement (Shapiro

& Stefkovich, 2016). Thus, the focus should be on helping these students gain a deeper
understanding of the English language other than on them needing re-education that sounds basic

to the natives. Youth in these circumstances need attention, discipline, and staying on them.

In conclusion, ethics should be considered when dealing with matters of diversity in the school

environment. Laws oppressing those without a voice should be reviewed and challenged if need

be. This creates the chance to view such dilemmas in several paradigms.
