After watching Lighting Design Process, I gained knowledge about lighting design that

the light is intensely personal. How the generators generate light, how the modifiers modify it,
how our eyes encode it and allow our brain to understand it, and how we interact with light all
have physiological implications. Choosing where to place the light and how many to use may
also have an impact on us; especially when designing it, all of the major features of lighting can
have an impact on us and our personal space.

Art and science. That is the essence of lighting design. Why is it a combination of art and
science? We are learning about how we perceive and react to space by considering how light is
distributed within it. Lighting is fundamental not just to architecture but also to people’s daily
lives. Just like the example photos of the library lighting in the video, at first the library alley
looks bright since it has a whole bunch of light in the ceiling, but as the ceiling light changes into
a linear system, it gives us a higher perception of brightness and helps us achieve the primary
task, which is to find a certain book. We can meet our needs or the needs of the users by asking
fundamental questions like what the critical tasks are, who is using the space, how it will impact,
where the most important surfaces are, when the light needs to be engaged, and why we are
doing the lighting.  In addition, selecting a light fixture is the key on how light strikes the
modifier and reflects the light back to us to have an interactive connection between the space and
light.Lighting design also affect our perception and psychology. It can boost our mood and
normalize our circadian rhythms, allowing us to sleep better and deeper. Light can reduce
depression levels and even improve cognitive skills such as reaction time and activation. The
amount and type of lighting have a direct impact on focus, appetite, mood, and a variety of other
areas of daily living. We should consider the fundamental toolkit when designing lighting in
space, which includes the intensity, or how much accent light or candela you will use in the
given space, the direction of the light, whether it provides accent or ambient light to the area, the
chromaticity, where you can choose the color temperature and spectrum, and the surface, which
includes whether it is smooth or shiny, what color it is, and how much reflectance it has.

Overall, the video altered my opinion of how we should select lighting. It's not only that
it brings light into a dark environment; we must also consider how it will affect us and the
atmosphere it will generate. Lighting design is the most important component to consider when
designing a place since it has the ability to alter the ambiance, shape, and scale of the area.
