TITLE

Significance of artificial lighting in gymnasium

ABSTRACT
The study of lights and the effects of it has become a
popular topic in recent years. Artificial lights are human
made and get sourced by a electric mean. It can effect a
human body in both positive and negative manner, so
installing it in a physical workout area is a task. People use
these spaces to improve their health, so the lights play a
major role in maintaining their physical performance, to
prove this it needs to get the opinion of the users through the
questionnaire survey. so this research will attempt to bridge
knowledge gap by reviewing a wide range of studies, with a

RELEVANCE (need of the research)
These days an increasing number of individuals are going
to gymnasiums, so as to counter the side effects of their
hectic urban life style. This development is promoting
people take health diet and fitness seriously. With this
increasing traffic improving the quality of this
environment is a necessary objective. As Gymnasiums are
totally air conditioned these spaces will mostly depend on
artificial lighting, with over illuminance can effect the
users visual comfort. So this study gives a conclusion how
that be avoided and the user can have a better experience
in the space, artificial lights also works as a aesthetic
element which can gain the attraction of the users willing
to join there, and how it helps the topic gives the idea
how and all artificial lights can be utilized in the
gymnasiums, how artificial lights
INTRODUCTION
Artificial lights are man made illumination which is sourced
by a electrical mean. Use of light to achieve practical and
aesthetics effects. All spaces require various kind of lighting
in order to be utilized properly, different kind of lights play
incompatible role in individual spaces. Likely the workout
spaces requires various lights in specific area’s, which
interacts with the user both physically and intellectually. That
can be either in positive or negative manner, lighting inside a
workout space regulates the performance specially artificial
lights, studies show that it will have influence on our energy
levels, the main focus of study to analyse the impact of
artificial light on health of user in physical workout spaces.
LITERATURE STUDY
Artificial Light is any light source that is not naturally occurring.
Artificial Light includes things like flash/strobes and
Lighting or illumination is the deliberate use of light to achieve practical
or aesthetic effects
Proper lighting can enhance task performance, improve the appearance of
an area, or have positive psychological effects on occupants. Indoor
lighting is usually accomplished using light fixtures, and is a key part
of interior design.
FIRST GENERATION
Bulbs based on heating of a wire
filament(incandescent lamps)or an arc. The
halogen lamp is a type of incandescent lamp
filled with a halogen gas such as iodine (I) or
bromine (Br).  It emits visible light and a
little UV light.  As UV that may cause, with
prolonged exposure, burns and skin cancer,
prolonged close exposure to halogen lamps
should be avoided. Quality incandescent light bulb

SECOND GENERATION
Gas discharge lamps florescent lighting is
based on electric discharge of gas (mercury),
leading to emission of high energy photon’s
(UV), that impact florescent coating of the
bulb, producing visible light. In addition to
visible light, a small amount of UV radiation
in the UVA range. Exposure to UV radiations
from CFL lamps containing mercury may be
reduced by distancing the lamps from the
user by 30cm or more Compact fluorescent lamp (CFL)
THIRD GENERATION

This is the generation we are currently in.

light emitting diode (LED) consists of a semi
conductor that has undergone doping, an
electrical current passing through the diode
excites the atoms to high energies. When the
atoms return to lower energy levels, energy
in the form of photons in the visible light
range is released. LED lamps emit visible Modern LED lamps
light and do not emit UV radiations.

The quality of light produced by each of these sources is characterized

by its effect on the sense of sight in the human eye, and it is measured in
one of two ways – the specific range of frequencies of each light source,
and the strength of illumination.  The strength of illumination is
measured in lumen units – the intensity of visible light as perceived by
the human eye

TYPES IN ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING

There are three basic types of lighting that work together to light your
home: General, Task and Accent. A good lighting plan combines all
three types to light an area, according to function and style.

AMBIENT LIGHTING

Ambient lighting is essentially indirect lighting. A soft light that is

reflected off the ceiling. It reduces the shadows on people's faces and
fills the room with equal brightness, opening the architecture and
drawing people in. Ambient light may be produced in a couple of ways.
Ambient lighting, or what is commonly called as general lighting,
serves as the primary source of light for a certain room. It is the
foundation of all the lighting of a room. Aside from the basic lighting
functionality, the ambient lighting improves the sense of warmth and
depth of a room or space.
Ambient lighting can be accomplished by using basic lighting fixtures
such as chandeliers, track lights, recessed lights, and wall or ceiling-
mounted lighting fixtures. There are various ways to achieve balance in
ambient lighting and this often depends on what type of room you are
using it for. In some rooms, this can also serve as a primary source for
task lighting just like in a laundry room

TRACK LIGHTING

Task lighting is direct lighting used specifically for certain tasks, such
as reading, writing, cooking, sewing, or other intricate work. It is used
to add visibility to a small area, with light bright enough to illuminate
small details, reduce strain on the eyes, and avoid distracting shadows

Besides making your work easier to see, task lighting is important for
your eye health. Inadequate lighting can cause eye strain and lead to
eye problems. More than a matter of aesthetics, brighter task lighting
is necessary to work safely and comfortably.

There are two basic types of track lighting: plug-in and hardwired. Plug-in
track lights do not require electrical wiring; however, they must be
located near an outlet. Hardwired track lights need to have electrical
connections made during installation through a junction box, which is an
electrical box in the ceiling or wall. Note: Hardwiring is usually best
handled by a professional electrician.
ACCENT LIGHTING

Accent lighting focuses light on a particular area or object. It is

often used to highlight art or other artifacts. Common types of
accent lights include wall sconces, floodlights, recessed
lights, torchère lamps, or track lighting. The brighter light from the
accent lamp creates visual interest to a room

Accent lighting is a form of lighting used very commonly for

illuminating walks with subtle light. However, this form of
lighting can also be used to highlight key objects and focal points
in the home or surrounding landscape

COLOUR FUNDAMENTALS IN ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING

Color temperature is measured in Kelvin (K), and there are three

common ranges: Warm Light (2700K-3000K); Cool White (3000K-
5000K), and Daylight (5000K-6500K). Warm Light resembles the
color of an incandescent; looking orange or yellow. Cool White
ranges from Yellow-White (3000K) to White (4000K) to Blue-White
(5000K).
A gymnasium, also known as a gym, is a covered location for
athletics. The word is derived from the ancient Greek term
"gymnasium". They are commonly found in athletic and fitness
centers, and as activity and learning spaces

GYM – A PLACE FOR WORKOUT

A modern day gymnasium (as gym used to be called way back in
Ancient Greece) is a place for indoor physical workout where various
equipment and machines are typically used. For some people, a
typical gym is a place where you focus on weight lifting and similar
activities. While it is true that gyms used to be reserved for weight
training and were rarely frequented by women, that’s not the case
nowadays. Both men and women work out at the gym, and there is a
great variety of machines, including cardiovascular machines.
Broadly speaking, gyms don’t offer as many group classes as a fitness
center does. While there are personal trainers and 1-1 training
sessions, group classes are not as common. Mind you, this applies to
facilities that identify only as gyms, and not as gyms and fitness
centers or health clubs

Trying to please everyone is needlessly complicated and may actually

undermine your authority as a "specialist" in a certain fitness niche.
For example, no one goes to a box gym chain expecting world-class
martial arts training, and no one would go to an old school boxing or
lifting gym wanting to join a spinning class.
Your atmosphere tells your customers what your gym is all about.
The fitness niches your trainers excel in, the services your customers
are likely to find in your facility, and even the likely cost of a
membership are just some of the factors communicated by the
ambience your establishment gives off.
GYM – SPACE, DESIGN, AND
LAYOUT

To perform well, a gym has to be designed

with a lot of thought and care – the facility
should be be spacious, well structured, and
properly organized to be able to
accommodate a lot of users and various
types of exercises at the same time

Traditionally, gyms and fitness centers haven’t considered layout to be

an integral part of launching a facility. The increasing changes in the
marketplace and an increase in competition and consumer demands has
seen a stronger focus on design and zones. Additionally the growth of
boutique facilities has put the focus on interior design and creating the
best environments – traditionally, however they have defined single-use
areas, leaving the opportunity to focus design and zones for facilities
catering for a variety of training goals and needs.

GYM ZONING
Zoning lets you put sensitive movement areas into certain places to avoid
cross overs, so people can do their own kind of training in the most
conducive atmosphere whether that is peaceful, energised, or focused
Potential Fitness Center spaces are numerous and varied. Small
facilities may have little more than a fitness area with cardiovascular
machines and weights, locker rooms, and a small
support/administrative area. Large facilities may add gymnasiums,
racquetball courts, indoor and/or outdoor pools, food service and
retail spaces, and child care spaces
Ideally, the fitness spaces
should naturally extend out of
the lobby entrance, past the
control desk. The control desk
should have visual control over
as much of the fitness spaces as
possible but particularly the
cardiovascular machines. If
other potentially hazardous
activities such as a climbing
wall are provided, the control
desk should have visual control
over those as well
Why is lighting in the gym important
Gyms have unique lighting needs and require adequate lighting to keep
participants focused and safe. Lights that are more difficult to reach, such
as those placed in areas with higher ceilings or above a swimming pool,
can be difficult to maintain.

Weight training requires motivation, attention to detail and persistence.

A frequent user of a weight room needs a lighting design tailored their
intense workouts. If people will be hoisting medicine balls, kettle bells
and even sands bags in a space, it’s important to consider ceiling
height and light fixtures.

According to research, light and colour have a huge impact on our

mood, productivity, and general well-being. Light is highlighted in
psychology, for the huge role it plays in decreasing depression and
increasing cognitive performance and capability.
It is essential to have good quality and efficient lighting in gyms to
help customers properly exercise and boost their performance
