Activity 1: Effect of Temperature

Objective: Describe how the temperature affects the rate of reaction.

Materials: 2 clear glass or bottle; 200 mL hot water; 200 mL cold water, 2 teaspoon coffee
Procedure:
1. Fill the first glass with 200 mL hot water and label it as glass A.
2. Fill the second glass with 200 mL cold water and label it as glass B.
3. Pour 1 teaspoon of coffee on each glass simultaneously.
4. Observe what happened.
Guide Questions:
1. Which glass dissolved or dispersed the coffee first?
2. Which glass dissolved or dispersed the coffee last?
3. Based on the result of your experiment, conclude on the effect of the temperature on the rate of
reaction.

Activity 2: Effect of Concentration

Objective: Describe how the concentration affects the rate of reaction.
Materials: 1½ teaspoon Baking powder; 20 mL Vinegar; 2 identical transparent glass
Procedure:
1. Prepare 2 identical transparent glasses, then pour 10 mL of vinegar on each glass.
2. Label the first glass A and the second glass B
3. Measure ½ teaspoon of baking powder and another 1 teaspoon on a separate dish or saucer.
4. Simultaneously pour the ½ teaspoon on glass A and the 1 teaspoon on glass B.
5. Observe what happened on both set-ups.

Guide Questions:
1. Can you propose a way by which the rate of reaction may be quantitatively measured?
2. Which glass produces more bubbles? Why do you think so?

Activity 3: Effect of Surface Area / Particle Size

Objective: Describe how the surface area / particle size affects the rate of reaction.

Materials: 2 Effervescent tablet ; 200 mL water, 2 identical transparent container or glass

Procedure:
1. Pulverize one of the tablet.
2. Measure 100 mL of water on a separate container or glass.
3. Label the containers as A and B.
4. Simultaneously drop the whole tablet in container A and the powdered tablet in container B.
5. Observe what happen in the two set-ups and record the time it takes for the tablet to be completely
dissolved in water.
Guide Questions:
1. Which tablet was dissolved first in water?
2. Based on your experiment, conclude about the effect of surface area / particle size on the speed of
reaction.
Activity 4: Effect of Nature of Reactants
Objective: Describe how the Nature of Reactants affects the rate of reaction.
Materials:
0.1 g iron nail ;0.1 g aluminum foil ; 20 mL Hydrochloric acid (HCl)
Procedure:
1. Measure 10 mL hydrochloric acid (HCl) on a two transparent glass container.
2. Label it as glass A and glass B.
3. Simultaneously drop the 0.1 g iron nail in glass A and the 0.1 g aluminum foil in glass B.
4. Observe what happen on the two set-ups.

Guide Question:
1. Which glass produces more bubbles? Why is this so?

Activity 5: Effect of Catalyst

Objective: Describe how the catalyst affects the rate of reaction.

Materials:
Papaya (Carica papaya) ; Chicken Meat Water

Procedure:
1. Prepare 250 g of peeled unripe papaya
2. Measure two sets of 250 g chicken meat (preferably of the same kind & part of chicken).
3. Prepare two casserole with 1L water each and label them as A and B.
4. Put one set of the chicken meat in casserole A and the other set in casserole B.
5. Add the 250 g peeled unripe papaya in casserole B. 6. Simultaneously boil/cook the two sets of
chicken in a medium heat for 20 minutes.

Guide Questions:
1. Which chicken is more tender? Why is this so?
2. What do you think is the role of the papaya in cooking the chicken?
3. What conclusion can you derive based on the activity?
