SCM presentation

Introduction

This presentation will consist of how the company applied procurement to the company to
become environmentally sustainable. How procurement makes the company environmentally
sustainable by using procurement will be explained.

What is the extent to which the company applied procurement to become

environmentally sustainable?

For PnP to become environmentally sustainable, they have to see what in the company is
causing them to not be environmentally sustainable. To become environmentally sustainable,
they need to apply Industry 4.0. Once Industry 4.0 is applied, it will be in charge of
innovating sustainable products. PnP is trying to reduce plastic use since that is one of the
main causes of to harm the environment.

According to Staff Reporter (2018), PnP has replaced plastic shopping bags with
environmentally friendly composable bags which are as “Green Bag”.

Pick n Pay (2022) states that they use green plastic bottles like Sprite bottles and recycle
100% of the plastic in them to create inexpensive reusable shopping bags. Pick n Pay was the
primary supermarket in South Africa to provide reusable bags as an alternative to plastic bags
in 2003. Since then, we've developed other replacements, such as cotton and RPET bags
(Pick n Pay 2022). PnP has recently worked with Designed for Earth to create a web tool that
allows packaging teams to assess if the packaging is recyclable and the effects of various
goods on the recycling capacity of packaging (Pick n Pay 2021:32).

PnP has created an innovative blue Pick n Pay plastic carrier bag that is sold in all stores to
reduce the environmental harm caused by the non-recycling of plastic bags. These bags are
constructed entirely of recycled materials—60% post-consumer waste and 40%
manufacturing waste—and contain no calcium additives (Pick n Pay 2019:30).

In South Africa, one of the most reused materials for packaging is PET. 63% of PET
bottles were reused in 2018, according to PETCO. Transparent PET has an
exceptionally high recyclable worth, thus it's crucial to keep it out of landfills and the
waste stream. Pick & Pay is seeking to encourage the gathering of green PET by
expanding its usage in our reusable bags. Green PET has a lower recyclable worth than
clear PET. PET bottles can be recycled at Pick n Pay locations, at public drop-off
locations, or (if available) through a home recycling service.

According to Omarjee (2023), the barrier bags in PnP will no longer be offered at checkouts,
but they will still be accessible in grocery shops' fruit and vegetable departments. Pick n Pay,
however, promotes the use of reusable netting bags among customers. By 2025, Pick n Pay
plans to minimize plastic waste. One of its goals is to have all or all of the packaging be
recyclable or reused. This objective has gone up from 67% to 80% in the last two years, the
store highlighted in a statement (Omarjee 2023).

Pick n Pay wants to acquire all of the cardboard and paper that it utilizes in its packaging
from "responsibly managed" forests (Omarjee 2023).

Recyclable PET can be viewed as a more sustainable option because it reduces carbon
emissions during production by at least 24%. Officially, RPET can take the place of anything
composed of PET (Prevented Ocean Plastic 2020).
