“Pulp and paper industry is considered as one of the environmentally unfriendly industries due to the production

of pulp and paper is related to many environmental problems. You are requested by a non-government organization
(NGO) to run a Green-movement event to raise the public awareness encouraging to BUY and USE only
environmentally friendly paper products in order to exert pressure and push the manufacturers to be more
responsible to the environment issues and to achieve SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) 12.”
Based on the above statement, propose the information that should be included and explained to the public during
the Green Movement Awareness event so that they can understand the importance of supporting green pulp and
paper products to minimize the negative impacts to the environment which are caused by the pulp and paper
manufacturing processes. Consequently, SDG 12 could be achieved.

The pulp and paper products consumption are known for its high level of usage, and the
consumption are still growing now. The level of pollution created from the production has reach the
a very concerning level, which one of the main issue is the waste consumption issue.

From the decades, many products that introduced to the public requires the productions of pulp and
paper as the main materials. Though many campaign has been held to rise the awareness of
reducing pulp and paper products, economically, and for our own usage, it is hard to terminate the
usage. However, the pulp and paper we used from the past until now, is creating a lot of waste issue,
and the product on the markets are usually not environmentally friendly

If we can’t remove the usage, then we need to find a replacement for the usage of pulp and paper
products.

Today, we are trying to reach Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12, which encourages more
sustainable consumption and production patterns through various measures, including specific
policies and international agreements on the management of materials that are toxic to the
environment.

The high-quality papers we use for printings, packaging, or examinations, are made from virgin pulp.
It is understandable that we need to ensure the product holds for long time, however the
production of virgin pulp requires the company to cut down trees. Of course, it is important to have
the virgin pulp in the market, however, increase of the used product have to be controlled. This is
where the recycled pulp comes in.

The recycled pulp are very different from virgin pulp. The paper used, whether it is from the boxes,
or the graphic paper, it is used as the main raw material for the repulping process. The repulping
process of secondary fibre in the pulp is easier, and less energy and chemical consumption
compared to the virgin pulping. This means that the effect of the production on the environment can
be reduced. Most importantly, we can introduce the used paper into a cycle of the recycled pulp
production, and we use it maximumly, while reducing the demand of virgin, and fully use the source
rather than dumping it straight away.
