BACKGROUND
Paper serves as one of the most common materials used in different forms. It is
utilized in a variety of applications, including packaging, art, and education. However,
the production and use of paper are the primary sources of deforestation in the world
today. In addition, the demand for paper and paperboard increases due to the effects of
economic growth (Parayno et al., 2020), meaning the industry will need more trees in
order to meet the demand for these products. According to Capital Solutions, reducing
paper waste and all other waste is a big problem. Over 60% of the annual 17 billion cubic
feet of trees that fell are utilized to create paper. This deforestation brings on nearly a
fifth of the annual greenhouse gas emissions in the globe.

The waste management hierarchy is the guiding principle in most waste

management policies. It establishes an order of preference for action to reduce and
manage wastes where recycling is a key element. Accordingly, recycling targets for
different packaging materials and household waste have been set around the world.
Recovered paper is one of the best managed secondary materials, boasting high recovery
and recycling rates around the world. In addition, recovered paper is both a technically
and environmentally sound raw material and an important global trade commodity.
Globally, recovered paper is the most important raw material for the paper and board
industry by volume (Ristola, 2012). (Ervasti, I., Miranda, R. and Kauranen, I.)

Aside from this, waste management is a crucial issue. It has been a challenge for
all nations due to the economic expansion of expanded urban agglomerations, which
resulted in fast growth in waste volume (UNEP 2009). Due to the wide range of complex
issues and elements that influence how trash is handled in solid waste management are a
challenging, interdisciplinary issue with economic and technological elements, normative

restrictions regarding the minimal standards for recycling, and issues relating to
sustainable development (Fiorucci et al., 2003; OECD, 2007a; McDougall et al., 2001).

Due to this reason, Lemongrass is one of the best alternatives to trees.

Lemongrass, also known as "tanglad," is a grass family member native to the Philippines.
This type of plant is commonly found in the North, and growing lemongrass is not
difficult because it can regrow through stalks. According to Zawawi Daud et al. (2020),
lemongrass has a high probability of becoming an alternative fiber due to its high
cellulose concentration and low lignin content. Cellulose is a type of organic polymer that
is found in cell walls and makes up the fibers of plants. A high cellulose content can
produce fiber stringency and improve papermaking or pulp quality. Also, it is essential
because it is the main component of the industry. Furthermore, lignin is another type of
organic polymer that provides rigidity and serves as a binder to form plant tissues. To put
it more simply, it will strengthen the fiber and make it more difficult to break.

On top of that, Limoncillo De Papel is a paper consisting of recycled paper and an
alternative element in making paper, lemongrass. It is eco-friendly and aims to help
reduce existing waste by recycling. It is absorbent, thus making it perfect for writing.
There is little to no scent except for the organic lemongrass that it contains. Moreover, it
is also durable and lasts for a long time.

Using recycled paper with lemon grass to manufacture LDP uses less water and
energy than using pulp from trees and other plants to make new paper products.
Recycling paper and using lemongrass helps to protect forests and trees. Numerous trees
are saved with each sheet of paper produced. LDP uses recycled paper as an eco-friendly
resource, saving cost for materials and energy.

The making of the product, “Limoncillo de Papel (LDP),” requires a few simple
ingredients such as (dried) lemongrass, used paper, cornstarch, glue, and baking powder.
According to a website called "Conserve Energy Future," cutting up or shredding used

paper is a necessary step to recycle paper, wherein it's one of the processes in Limoncillo
de Papel.

LDP has many uses, from academic and professional use to making arts and crafts
as a hobby. It has a smooth texture that is suitable for writing, especially love letters for
loved ones, because its look gives off a vintage vibe. On the other side, it has a rough
surface, which is ideal for making various artworks unique and fabulous. Furthermore, it
can also be used as greeting cards, such as for birthday gifts, invitations, and holiday
greetings, because the product is aesthetically pleasing.

MISSION STATEMENT
Promoting the anti-deforestation and waste management propaganda for
developing a sustainable future for the betterment of today’s society.

VISION STATEMENT
LDP succeeds in achieving a healthier environment and in providing an
alternative source for paper products through the use of renewable resources.

RATIONALE
Due to the overwhelming impact of global warming, an alternative of non -
biodegradable materials such as plastic, paper et al. would be beneficial for our world.
Having a paper that contains eco-friendly ingredients such as recycled paper and
lemongrass helps stop one of the main issues of our world today which is waste
management.

According to a website called “paper recycling coalition”, global climate change

may have serious environmental and economic ramifications for the United States and
other countries. 3.6 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are avoided
for every ton of recovered paper transformed into new recycled paperboard for packaging

and other end applications. Recycling paper decreases greenhouse gas emissions that
cause global warming in three ways: First, paper recycling reduces landfill methane
emissions. To begin, eighty percent (80%) of the paper that is not recycled ends up in
landfills. In landfills, paper decomposition creates methane, a greenhouse gas with
twenty-one (21) times the heat-trapping potential of carbon dioxide (CO2). The U.S. The
EPA has identified landfills as the single greatest source of methane emissions in the
United States, with paper degradation being the primary cause. When paper is recycled, it
does not wind up in the garbage stream, where it will decompose and emit methane.
Simply said, the less paper that is landfilled, the less methane is released. Second, paper
recycling preserves more trees alive, allowing them to absorb more carbon dioxide
(CO2). There are no trees used in the production of one hundred percent (100%) recycled
paper. Trees that are left standing absorb carbon from the atmosphere, a process known
as carbon sequestration, which is one method of mitigating the effects of industrial CO2
emissions. Lastly, recycling paper uses less energy. Creating fresh paper from recycled
paper uses less energy than making paper from wood. When compared to virgin grades of
paperboard, one hundred percent (100%) recycled paperboard consumes fifty percent
(50%) less energy, considerably lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

Therefore, with these issues to consider, a product that consists of reusable

materials such as lemongrass is one eco-friendly and it contains unique components that
are eligible to achieve the ideal product.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

LDP is a good substitute for trees when making a paper based on ecological
impact. It will be much more efficient to use as a production material due to its low
ecological impact compared to using trees. The product is beneficial to students since
they can use it for writing and business owners can use the recycled paper made of
lemongrass as a package for their products, considering the paper is strong enough to
wrap their selling goods. In addition, Consumers can also use the paper for designing
journals, scrapbooks, and their projects. Since the material cost is lower than the typical

cost of resources used in paper production, the product will also be beneficial to several
consumers since it is more affordable and better suited to their budget. To conclude, LDP
has no drastic effect on the ecosystem caused by its main pulp resource which is
lemongrass, a renewable and common source alternative for trees.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The “Limoncillo de Papel” requires a few simple ingredients such as dried
lemongrass, used paper, cornstarch, and baking powder. The LDP is ideal for writing,
especially love messages for close friends and family. Furthermore, they can design
notebooks, scrapbooks, and other crafts with the paper. The opposite side of the LDP is
rough, which is perfect for giving the artwork a distinctive and gorgeous appearance.
However, Businessmen can also use this recycled lemongrass paper for their business
correspondence. Since this paper is printable, they can print their reports to lower their
office expenses.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Limoncillo De Papel is a paper consisting of recycled paper and an alternative
element in making paper, lemongrass. It is eco-friendly and aims to help reduce the
existing waste by recycling. In addition, It is also durable and it does not rip off easily
and lasts for a long time. However, Limoncillo de Papel not only aims to satisfy
customers but also has three main purposes to fulfill in terms of environmental,
ecological, and affordability.

METHODOLOGY

1. Brainstorming about the possible product.

We started off with a brainstorming session. Brainstorming helped us to gather

the ideas that we needed for the better development of the product. This part is important
wherein we consider each opinion about what item we should produce. However, even

though all the suggestions are good, we needed to narrow it down. Also, one of the things
that we prioritize is to make sure that no one person's idea was too good to be true. In
addition, we tried to find out if anyone else was already working on a similar product, so
we could study their strategies and build on that.

2. Researching and Making Decisions .

After gathering those ideas, we did some research to get more information and
do some analysis. Through getting details and by considering those advantages and
disadvantages, it helped us to determine the best product that we should create. At last,
we choose paper as our product.

3. Meeting and Planning

We had a meeting with our members on how we can make our paper unique. We
exchanged different opinions, browsed and read different sources. Also, we went through
each idea one by one and looked at how much time and money it would take us to make
it happen, if it seemed feasible at all. Whilst gathering ideas and thinking of a way to
create a product that would be essential or at least useful to everyday lives. With that
said, the idea of recycled paper with organic contents came to mind.

4. Finalizing
Since we also consider how we can help or don't harm nature as much as
possible and to give at least an alternative product so we can lessen the problem about the
paper waste issue. We came up with the idea of using lemongrass as our main ingredient
instead of trees, this is much better for our ecosystem. Moreover, we also look at how we
can make it affordable yet still in great quality.

5. Introducing the product

Lastly, we studied more about it and with the help of some articles namely
bluecat papers and iopscience.org, the product was innovative and we called it
Limoncillo De Papel (LDP).
