 Earth Songs for the Five Hole Native American Flute

Native American flute music has traditionally been ‘made up’ on the
spot, by playing what one feels. It is a wonderful tool for self expression.

This book was designed for those who might want to learn to play
specific songs on their flute. The tonal graphics were written using the A
Minor 5 hole Native American style flute.

A mirror image, the TOP circle on each tonal graphic represents the
flute hole nearest your MOUTH when you play. The bottom circle
represents the hole on your flute that is farthest from your mouth. Each
dark circle represents a flute hole that must be covered in order to play
that particular tone. When you cover the holes, be sure that your
fingers cover the entire hole, or it will not make the correct sound. (Also
check your block/fetish to be sure it is positioned correctly.)

This music is written so that it can be played even by those
with no musical training. The following helpful symbols are
used in this book:

This symbol represents a grace note, for which you rapidly

raise and lower the finger that covers the hole next to the
symbol. The last tone is the same as the first, formed when
lowering the finger, and it is the notation graphic following the
symbol.

This symbol is a holding symbol. Each note that has this

symbol after it gets held longer than the notes that do not have
one after them. It is up to you how long. You will get a sense of
the length that it needs. (Two holding symbols indicate that
the note gets held longer than notes with just one holding
symbol.)
