Aloe vera (L.) Burm.f.


Soil and Climate
• Origin: Arabian Peninsula
• Can't tolerates water logging
• Prefer A red soil, loamy soil or sand loam soil.
• pH: withstand 5.0 to 8.5.
• It can tolerate a dry climate (15-20 cm rainfall)
to humid climate (150-200 cm rainfall)
• Can’t tolerate excessive cold climate, heavy
rainfall and fogged conditions.
Propagation
• Seeds:
– Sowing date: in spring
– Germination media: compost, sand and perlite
(1:1:1).
– Germination temperature: 21°C
– Germination period: 4–24 months
• Sucker Separation:
– Time: in summer, leave for a day to dry,
– Planting media: compost and sand mix (2:1).
– Leave in a warm place to establish.
Planting
• Time: End of September to end of October or
April-May if irrigation facilities are available.
• The 2/3rd part of sucker is buried in soil
• Planting distance: 45-30 cm.
Fertilization and Irrigation
• Manure: 8-10 MT/ha.
• 100 kg/ha of compost should be given after 30
days of planting and repeated after 180 days.
• Fertilizer recommendation:
– 25-30 days after planting: 35 N, 25 P and 25
K kg/ha
– 170-180 days after planting: 35 N, 25 P and
25 K kg/ha
• Irrigation: bimonthly from October to February
and monthly from March to June.
• It is very sensitive to water lodging
Leaves Harvest
• Time: 7-8 M after planting. October-November
are the best period
• Manually by sharp knife is a labor-intensive.
• The outermost 3-4 leaves are harvested at the
white base.
• Prevent damage to the outer rind to prevent
bacterial infection.
• Second year gives maximum yield and for about
4-5 years good yield could be harvested.
• Leaves are dried in shade and then in sun before
storages.

Flowers Harvesting
• Time: December – January
• Preserved after proper drying
Handling and Processing
• Refrigeration: to prevent enzymatic and
bacterial activities
• Decolorization (with activated charcoal and
diatomaceous earth): removes a variety of
carcinogenic small-molecular-weight organic
compounds, including aloins A and B, from aloe
vera leaf material.
