Deck department duties

The master (class 1 COC)

Chief officer(first officer/ first mate)( class 2 COC)

- Head of deck department


- Mainly responsible for the stowage of cargo
- Looks after the maintenance of the vessel

Second officer(class 3 COC)

- Navigating officer
- Upkeep of all charts and publications
- Planning and plotting of courses for the voyage in consultation with the master

Third officer(third mate)(class 3 COC)

- Safety officer
- Charge of the upkeep of all safety appliances on board

Deck cadets

- Participate in ship activities on deck or in the engine room


- Maintenance of the vessel

Boatswain (bosun) & rating

- Petty officer/ supervisor


- ABs (able bodied seamen) who works under the Bosun
- - does steering, bridge and gangway (accommodation ladder) duties
- GP (general purpose seamen)
- - work in the engine room and the deck
- Ordinary seamen and deck hands
- - maintenance work

Engine department

Chief engineer officer

- Running and maintenance of all engines and machineries in the engine room and on deck

Second engineer officer ( sane as chief officer) (class 2 C0C)

Third engineer officer


Fourth engineer officer (class 5 COC)

Junior engineer officer

Electrical engineering officer (take over by chief engineer)

No.1 greaser

- Bosun in the engine room

Greasers

- Cleaning maintenance room

Catering department

Radio department
