H.E. Dr Huang Huikang bids farewell to Malaysia
In
conjunction with the 68th Anniversary of the
Founding of the People’s Republic of China, The
Ambassador Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary of
the People’s Republic of China to Malaysia, H.E. Dr
Huang Huikang and his wife, Madam Zhao Shumei
hosted a reception on 26 September 2017 to celebrate
the occasion.
Held at the Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur, the
reception was well attended by over 1,000 guests
comprising dignitaries, business and political leaders,
captains of industry, representatives of Chinese
organisations and associations, friends and staff of the
Chinese Embassy.
Dato’ Mark Ling, President & Executive Director along
with Deputy CEO, Ajeet Singh Ahluwalia and Board
Secretary, Tang Yang Yang were also present to
extend Edra’s heartiest congratulations to the People’s
Republic of China on its 68th Anniversary.
This will be the fourth and last National Day reception
that H.E. Dr Huang is hosting in Kuala Lumpur as he
completes his 4-year term as the Chinese Ambassador
to Malaysia by mid-October 2017.
Speaking at the reception, H.E. Dr Huang said that
during the four years in Malaysia, he has witnessed the
best period of bilateral relations between China and
Malaysia, following President Xi Jinping’s state visit
to Malaysia back in October 2013. During this period,
a comprehensive strategic partnership between both
countries have also been established.
“On behalf of the Board of Directors, Management
and staff of Edra, I would like to express our sincere
appreciation to H.E. Dr Huang for all the support and
cooperation given to Edra,” said Dato’ Mark.
Since becoming a member of the CGN family, Edra
has built a strong relationship with the Embassy of
People’s Republic of China to Malaysia, and continues
to enjoy the great rapport with the Ambassador and
H.E. Dr Huang Huikang the staff at the Embassy.

H.E. Dr Huang was present at the launch of the “New
Edra, A New Chapter” in April 2016, following the
successful completion of the acquisition of Edra by CGN.
In March this year, the Chinese Ambassador also visited
Edra’s Telok Gong Power Station in Melaka as part of
his tour of six states and 12 projects in Malaysia with
Chinese investments.
“On this note, I would like to acknowledge the good work
and efforts that have been put in by our Board Secretary,
Mr Tang Yang Yang in helping Edra to build the strong
relationship with the Chinese Embassy,” said Dato’ Mark.
Dr Huang is expected to take up his new posting based
in Beijing. He has been nominated by the Chinese
Government to represent China as a member of the
International Law Commission for the 2017-2021 term.
The Commission is a body established by the United
Nations.
Edra would like to take this opportunity to wish H.E. Dr
Huang and his wife good health and continued success
in his new posting.
“We would also like to extend a very warm welcome to
the new Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China
to Malaysia. We look forward to continue building on the
strong relationship with the Chinese Embassy for which
the foundation has already been laid by H.E. Dr Huang,”
added Dato’ Mark.

SNPI conducts technical and safety assessment for JIMAH
A
team from Suzhou Nuclear Power
Research Institute Co. Ltd (SNPI)
was in Malaysia recently to conduct a
technical and safety assessment for Jimah
Power Plant, from 26 – 29 September, 2017.
SNPI, whose core business covers technical
solution, technical implementation and
R&D, is a wholly owned subsidiary of
CGN. It provides specialized, standardized
and intensive technical services to power
industry.
Leading the 8-men delegation from
SNPI was its General Manager,
Mr Wang Wei. The other team
members were specialists in their
respective fields: Mr Liu Yong
(Steam turbine & rotating machine),
Mr Chen Zhong Bing (Material
science & pressure vessel), Mr
Luo Wen Bo (Plant operation), Mr
Jiang Xiao Bin (Water chemistry),
Mr Feng Guang Ming (Equipment Mr Wang Wei
management & electrical), Mr Ma
Hai Long (Control and instrumentation) and up the
Mr Chen Wei (Boiler and environment). of their

In his welcoming speech, Dato’ Mark Ling,
President & Executive Director of Edra
thanked the delegation for their support, and
said that he looks forward to having many
such visits to enable an effective transfer
of know how between Jimah and SNPI,
particularly in enhancing O&M procedures of
the plant.
The 4-day session focussed mainly on the
key technical problems faced by Jimah
due to inherent design issue which has
impacted the plant’s availability factor and
indirectly causing forced outages
at the plant. They also discussed
the remediation plans by Jimah to
address the problems.
As part of the assessment,
the delegation visited various

CGNNE Chief Engineer visits Project Melaka site

T
he Project Melaka development continues to generate
great interest, given its proposed plant up capacity,
development cost and the significance of the new
power project to the electrification requirement of Malaysia
after 2021.

Mr Liu Luping, Chief Engineer of CGNNE flew in to Kuala

Lumpur on 16 May 2017 for a brief two-day working visit to
Edra. The entourage from CGNNE also included Mr Henry
Chu, Mr Oscar Huang and Mr Guan Cheng Jie.

Day one of the itinerary focused mainly on Project Melaka.

The day’s programme included briefings by the Project
Melaka management team, discussions with the EPC
Contractors and followed by the Project Melaka tour for a
first-hand knowledge of the construction site and to assess
the physical site work progress.

On the second day, the CGNNE delegation visited the Telok

Gong Power Station in Melaka where they were briefed by Mr

Station, Edra CEO, Dato’ Nazri was present to welcome the
delegation along with the Power Station Manager, Mr Abdul
Razak Jamin who conducted the briefing. The briefings at
both plants covered an overview of the respective plants,
plant operations, performance, and other operational and
technical matters.

Throughout the visit, the delegation was accompanied by Mr

Md Shamsul Bahrin Hussain, Edra’s Senior Vice President of
Group Projects.

Project Melaka seal agreements on EPC and LTSA

P
roject Melaka continues to make great
strides as it achieved yet another
milestone in its journey towards
developing Malaysia’s largest and most
efficient 2,242 MW Combined Cycle Gas
Turbine (CCGT) plant by 2021.

Hot on the heels of its PPA and GSA signings EPC Signing LTSA Signing
in April 2017, Edra has also since confirmed
the appointments of the project’s contractor
and technology provider for its new power
plant in Alor Gajah, Melaka.

In a ceremony held on 30 May 2017 in Kuala

Lumpur, Edra Energy Sdn Bhd signed the
Engineering, Procurement and Construction
(EPC) Contract with the Consortium of
Hyundai Engineering Co. Ltd., Hyundai

As the EPC Contractor, the Hyundai

Consortium will carry out the construction
of the power plant on a turnkey basis
including design, engineering, procurement,
construction, testing and commissioning
to achieve the scheduled Commercial
Operation Dates of 1 January 2021, 1 March
2021 and 1 May 2021 for the first, second
and third generating blocks respectively.
Each of the three generating blocks have a
capacity of 747.4 MW.
Under the EPC Contract, Hyundai will also
be responsible for the supply and installation
of three of the world’s most-efficient 9HA.02
gas turbines by GE, which has been selected
as the technology provider for this project.

At the same ceremony, Edra Energy Sdn
Bhd also signed the Long Term Services
Agreement (LTSA) with the Consortium of
GE Global Parts & Products, GmbH and GE Senior Management teams from Edra and Hyundai
Power Solutions (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.
Under the LTSA, GE will provide Edra with a
maintenance program over two major cycles
covering the power train which represents
the core technology of the project.

The latest GE ‘H’ technology gas turbines
are expected to deliver a cost-effective
conversion of fuel to electricity and to
operate at more than 61 percent efficiency at
ambient conditions.
Project Melaka, which is expected to cost
some RM6.0 billion, will add another 2,242
MW to Edra’s power portfolio, bringing the
total net generating capacity to 7,771 MW by
2021 from 5,529 MW currently. A group photo with the GE team

HPL signs Long Term Parts Management agreement Port Said East Power

H Geocean Entrepose
aripur Power Limited (HPL) has signed a multi-
year Long Term Parts Management agreement with
Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) for the
supply of parts for the gas turbines at HPL plant.

The signing, which took place on July 4th, 2017 at Edra’s

Head Office in Kuala Lumpur, marks the successful
completion of an extensive negotiation between both parties
following the expiry of the previous agreement.

The new agreement will have a tenure of approximately 6

years, commencing from February 2017 to November 2023.

n March 2017, Port Said East Power (PSEP)
signed a contract with Geocean Entrepose for
the plant’s GRP (glass reinforced plastic) Pipe
Rehabilitation Project.

The agreement between both parties was signed

on March 9th at Edra Head Office in Kuala Lumpur
by Dato’ Mark Ling, President and Executive
Director of Edra Power Holdings Sdn Bhd and
Mr Sebastien Berne, Chief Operating Officer of
Geocean Entrepose.

Under the agreement, Geocean Entrepose will

undertake to repair/replace PSEP’s damaged
intake and discharge pipelines during the plant’s
scheduled outage in October 2017.

in France, is an international marine works
contracting company that specializes in
construction works for oil and gas, and water
industries.

BPDB engineers visit MPL plant

M
eghnaghat Power Limited (MPL) played host to some
50 newly employed engineers of Bangladesh Power
Development Board (BPDB)’s Training Centre in
Ghorasal, Bangladesh.

The visit to the MPL plant, which took place on 17 July 2017,
is part of the Induction Training course for BPDB engineers
to familiarise with the different plant technologies available in
Bangladesh. The delegation was led by Mr. Md. Abul Kalam
Azad, Sub-Divisional Engineer of Training Centre.

At the MPL plant, the new engineers had the opportunity to

learn about the operations of a combined cycle power plant,
the process flow, the functions of the major equipment, as well
as the safety standards that are practised at the plant.

During the full day visit, Mr. Md. Mahfuzul Islam, Assistant
Manager (Performance) took the delegation on a guided tour
of the plant which included the Control Room, Steam Turbine,
Gas Turbine and Balance of Plant area. To complete their tour
experience, MPL hosted the visitors to a lunch reception at the
plant’s staff canteen.

At the end of the tour, the delegation expressed their

appreciation to the MPL management for the hospitality and
knowledge shared. The visit has certainly given them a better
understanding of the running of a combined cycle power plant.

All about budgets
Budget 2018 and mid-year review
Budget … that very important and effective
management tool for running a business,
though many will attest to it being a
detailed, tedious and time-consuming
process.
For the Finance teams at the Head Office,
preparation of the annual budget for Edra
Group is a major exercise consolidating
over 30 budget holders at the Head Office,
2 country offices and 13 power assets. On
top of that, the budget must be aligned with
the ultimate shareholder’s requirements.
To kick-start the budgeting process for
the new financial year, the Group Finance
Department organised the “Budget 2018
and Mid-Year Review 2017 Meeting” in Kuala
Lumpur on 11 July 2017.
Led by Group CFO, Mr Li Wei Qiang and his
Deputy, Mr Tang Kee Meng, members of the
Thomas Wong
Finance Team took time out from their busy
daily routine to gather at the Impiana Hotel
Kuala Lumpur for a day-long discussion
on the tasks lying ahead for the upcoming
budget.
Present at the meeting were the respective
sections from Head Office including Financial
Accounting, Management Accounting,
Project Finance and Group Tax, along with
the Finance Teams from the Malaysian
plants, Egypt and Bangladesh offices.

from CGNNE’s Finance team, led by
Mr Thomas Wong who is the Finance
Controller.
The discussions centred on the key
challenges faced and the learnings, areas
for improvement based on past experience

The afternoon session focussed on the mid-

year review of the current year budget, with
presentations by the respective teams on
their key achievements to date, identification
of strengths and weaknesses, plus areas
for improvements. They also updated
the meeting on the status of their key
deliverables as well as plans for the second
half of the current financial year.

Staff cost budgeting
The budget-related session continued the
following day, 12 July 2017 at the Edra
Head Office, with HR matters as its specific
agenda.
The session, entitled “Staff Cost Budget
Management Training for EPH HR & Finance
Professionals”, involved some 30 Edrans
from Group HR, Group Finance, Malaysian
Plants, Egypt and Bangladesh offices.

CGNNE kicked off its presentation with
an explanation on the staff cost budget
management workflow involving the HR and
Finance sections at Edra Group, CGNNE,
CGN and SASAC.
This was followed by discussions on the
categories and definitions of the staff cost
items that are listed in the budget template.
This was important given that classification
of terminologies may differ in each country;
hence, the need to ensure that there is a
common understanding of the components
included under items like salaries cost,
statutory contributions, insurance, staff
benefits, HR and training expenses, etc.
The meeting also walked through the
various templates used for reporting by HR
and Finance respectively, the accounting
methods in use, key focus areas in the staff
cost budget, Jiu Qi financial system adopted
by CGN, and the relevant budget controls.
The session has certainly helped to provide
better understanding for both the HR and
Finance teams working on the annual staff
cost budgeting and hopefully, make it easier
when the next budget cycle comes around.

CSR in Bangladesh
I
n keeping with the Group’s commitment
to contribute towards the communities in
which it operate, our assets in Bangladesh
carried out a series of community outreach
programmes throughout the year in 2016.
Organised by the Group’s Meghnaghat
Power Plant, Haripur Power Plant and NEPC
Plant, the programmes covered a wide range
of worthy causes related to health, education,
environment, sports and vocational training.
Beneficiaries of the various programmes
were mostly local residents, schools and the
communities surrounding our power plants
in Bangladesh.
The CSR programmes that were implemented
included a medical camp that focused on
women and children; free eye screening for
students; educational awards for students
with good academic results; school
uniforms, school bags and stationeries for
underprivileged students from the local
communities; support for school sports
events as well as contribution of digital
equipment as teaching tools for schools.
We also partnered with local grassroots
organisation to organise English course
training programmes for teachers from
primary and high schools in the area. In
addition, the local assets have consistently
supported the vocational training programme
on computer and tailoring for unemployed,
economically disadvantaged youth.
Another long-running programme organised
by the Bangladesh assets each year is
the tree planting initiative in support of
the environment, whereby we distributed
thousands of tree saplings to be planted at
local residential homes and public spaces.
Mother and Child Care Medical Camp
MPL, HPL and NEPC plants organized a two
day-long  free  medical camp  on Mother &
Child Care Medical Camp for their respective
local communities. A team of physicians
and medical practitioners from MPL-Ibrahim
General Hospital checked the overall health
condition of the mothers and their children.
In winter, many kids die because of their
inability to meet the expenses of the costly
treatment and government hospitals are
unable to provide free medical aid to each
and every poor patient. Our objective was
to screen their health condition and advice
accordingly. We had three medical camps,
for NEPC community it was held at Kutubpur
Primary School, for HPL Community at
Kuripara Primary School and at Meghnaghat
Power plant gate for MPL community.  Some
1,200 residents benefited from the camp.
Eye Camp In Schools
The Eye Care wing of MPL-Ibrahim General
Hospital was our partner for the eye screening
programme, which sent a team of physicians
and medical practitioners to conduct the
eye screening. Some 1,800 students of
Shilpanagari High School & Islampur Primary
School have benefited from this programme.
Educational Awards
The objective of this program is to encourage
excellence among students in the local
communities. For 2016, a total of 195
students received awards for their academic

achievements. They are from Meghnaghat
Shilpanagari High School and Islampur
Meghnaghat Community School; Kuripara
High School and Kuripara Primary School
of HPL Community; and Kutubpur Primary
School near the NEPC power plant.
Uniforms and School Materials for Local
School Students
Some 1,300 underprivileged children from
Islampur Primary school, Kuripara Primary
School and Kutubpur Primary School were
beneficiaries of this annual CSR programme.
These schools are located adjacent to our
MPL, HPL & NEPC stations respectively.
They received school uniforms, school bags
and stationery sets.

CSR in Bangladesh
Promoting Sports in Schools
MPL, HPL & NEPC support the importance
of developing talents and participation in
sports among school children. Each year,
we contribute prizes to local schools for
their annual sports programmes. Kutubpur
Primary School, Kuripara Primary School
and Islampur Primary School were recipients
of contributions from our NEPC, HPL and
MPL plants respectively.
Multimedia for Digital Education
HPL, MPL & NEPC also contributed
multimedia and sound system for digital

Education was our partner for this program
which is aimed at upgrading the skills of
primary and high school level teachers.
15 English teachers from primary and high
schools located near our plants participated
in the programme which focused on the
development of student-centered teaching
methods and strategies for emphasizing
critical thinking skills in the learning process.
Vocational Training for the Youth
The vocational training program on
computer and tailoring is aimed at assisting
unemployed, economically disadvantaged
individuals. The training centre is located
within the Kutubpur Primary School

building. Students are selected based on
their unemployment and financial status.
At the end of the programme, a certificate
presentation ceremony is held for the
successful students. The certificate helps
the students when applying for jobs or to
work abroad.
Planting for the Environment
As part of our contributions towards
the conservation of the environment,
we have been organising a ‘replanting’
programme every year that involves the local
communities. For 2016, we distributed 8,000
tree saplings to some 1,500 neighborhood
residents, as well as to public spaces like
schools, mosques, playgrounds, etc which
are located near our power stations in
Bangladesh.

Durians, durians and

more durians
A
hhh, durians … love them or loathe
them! But for the folks at KLPP, the
annual Durian Party is a much looked
forward to event.

This is one event that is planned on short

notice. It has to coincide with the durian
harvest season so as to ensure we get good
quality fruits. As soon as the phone call
comes in from the supplier in Pahang, the
team at KLPP immediately kicks into action
to organise the party within a week.

This year, the durian party took place on

22 August 2017. Joining the KLPP staff for
the big makan (which means eat in Malay)

Bitter/sweet taste, rich/creamy/dry/sticky

texture, pale yellow/royal yellow/dark orange
colour flesh … there must be hundreds of
types of durians in Malaysia, with exotic
names like Musang King, XO, Red Prawn,
Tekka, Golden Phoenix, Black Thorn, 101,
D24 and the humble durian kampong.

So popular are the King of Fruits that all

500 kg of durians brought in by our vendor
were finished in one afternoon by the 100
attendees at the event.

Never mind if our breath stinks and the

smell of the fruit lingers on our fingers longer
than expected, durians are a surefire way to

Hari Raya Open House
A
steady stream of visitors were seen
making their way to the Grand Hyatt
Hotel, Kuala Lumpur one evening in
July, during the busy after office rush hour in
the middle of the work week.
Guests resplendent in their traditional Malay
costume, families in colour coordinated
themes alongside men in corporate suits
turned up for the Edra Hari Raya Aidilfitri
Open House held on Wednesday, 12 July
2017.
The Open House has been a tradition
practised by the Group over the years to
celebrate this joyous occasion as well as to
extend its appreciation to its stakeholders,
industry associates, corporate friends, Edra
employees and families for their continued
support.
The well-wishers were served a variety of
food, including local delicacies such as satay,
rendang, lemang, ketupat, lamb briyani rice,
curry laksa and more. For dessert lovers,
there was no holding back as they tucked
in to the delicious bubur pulut hitam (black
glutinous rice with coconut cream), chilled
sago with taro and coconut milk, cakes,
chocolate brownies and the assortment of
Malay kuehs and Raya cookies.
A 5-pc Batak band kept the guests
entertained with its wide range of repertoire
and catchy tunes, including popular hits
through the decades and evergreen Raya
songs. The photo booth, with a traditional
Malay kampong setting complete with an
old bicycle as the backdrop, was a great hit

with guests as they took turns to pose with
friends and families.
For the children, there were plenty of
activities to keep them busy and happy.
The Kids’ Corner had a playground set for
them to swing, slide and tumble, or try their
hands at sand art and colouring. Another
sure favourite were the clown and magician
who had the kids in stitches with their
funny antics. Members of the Edra Senior
Management team were also seen handing
out duit raya (money packets) to the young
ones.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri marks the end of the fasting
month of Ramadan and the start of a new
month on the Islamic calendar, Syawal. It is
also a time of forgiveness and strengthening
of bonds amongst family and friends. For
2017, Hari Raya Aidilfitri falls on 25 June and
in Malaysia, the Raya celebrations continue
throughout the month of Syawal.

Jimah’s Hari Raya celebration held on 19
July 2017 was also an appreciation lunch for
two inhouse programmes organised by the
Plant.
The Jimah Innovative & Creative Circle
programme is a competition that encourages
employees to put on their thinking caps to
provide creative solutions that improve
work efficiency and productivity (see
accompanying story). At the gathering, Ir
Abdul Razak Jamin, Power Station Manager,
presented Certificates of Appreciation to the
participants.
Another innovative first-time programme
by Jimah was the Jom Kurus Raya (which
translates as Let’s Slim Down for Raya), a
competition that was aimed at inculcating
safety and health in the work culture and
lifestyle.
This weight loss challenge ran for a period
of 9 weeks from April 17th to June 16th, 2017
and attracted the participation of 108 male
employees and 17 ladies. The participants
do a weigh-in once every fortnight during
the competition period, and winners are
selected based on the total biggest weight
loss by weight reduction in percentage.

shedding off 16.2 kg, equivalent to 19.3%

Muhamad Hafifi bin Jamil with a slim 0.2%

Up (Men) prize. Hafifi had a weight loss of
19.2 kg but his percentage reduction was
19.1%. The 1st Runner Up (Women) was Siti
Hajar Binti Auzar, who successfully lost 10.8
kg or 11.6% of her weight.
All in, the 12 prize winners (Champion; 1st,
2nd and 3rd runners up for men and women;
and 5 consolation) successfully lost a total of
147.6 kg. For their efforts, each received a
hamper and certificate of appreciation from
their Power Station Manager, Ir Abdul Razak.
More importantly, they gained themselves a
healthier body and a better lifestyle.
Kudos to all the winners and participants.
Judging by the roaring success of this
competition, plans are already underway for
the Jom Kurus Raya Jimah 2.0 next year.

Jimah Innovative & Creative Circle
A novel programme by Jimah to boost efficiency
E arly this year, Jimah introduced a
programme to promote innovation
and creative solutions at work that can
help improve plant operations and work
efficiency.
Aptly named “Jimah Innovative & Creative
Circle”, this is a year-long competition
which started on January 23rd, 2017 and
will end on December 1st, 2017. Any staff
can take part, whether as individuals, or
group of individuals, or as a department
or section.
To enter, one has to submit a suggestion
form in which it will outline the issue/s at
work and the proposed solution/s. This
will be evaluated by a Steering Committee
(“Committee”), consisting of the Power
Station Manager, Ir Abdul Razak Jamin
and some Heads of Departments.
If the Committee finds the suggestion to
be feasible, it will give the go-ahead to
the participant/team. The Team Members
and their Circle Leader will then start their
data collection process and also conduct
a Root Cause Analysis. Once that is done,
the Circle Leader will present the Team’s
findings and recommendations to the
Committee.
If the proposal is approved by the
Committee, the team will then submit

their Project Schedule for implementation.
At the end of the project, a Completion
Report will be prepared, along with other
relevant documents including the SOP
(Standard Operating Procedure). The team
will also conduct a post-mortem review of
the project.
All participants/teams are required to
complete their project and submit the
full report before December 1st, 2017.
To date, the programme has attracted
participation from six departments which
had submitted in their proposal papers.
Certificates of Appreciation are presented
to all participants.
The Committee will conduct a series of
evaluations to determine the winner for
the Best Project Award. The key criteria
will be one that has successfully shown
positive benefits to the plant such as cost
reduction, greater work practice efficiency,
safety, environment, etc.
“We believe that by giving staff the
opportunity to make continuous
improvements in their day-to-day work,
it will make their job more interesting and
meaningful. As for the company, there
are potential benefits in the form of lower
O&M costs and greater plant operation
efficiency,” said Razak.

Healthcare & Wellness Campaign
A SHE programme by Jimah
O
n average, a person working full-
time spends more than one-third
of his/her day, five days per week
at the workplace. Employers therefore,
have a responsibility to provide a safe and
hazard-free workplace. They also have the
opportunity to promote individual health and
foster a healthy work environment for their
employees.
Edra’s Safety Health & Environment
(SHE) commitment is also aligned to its
shareholders’ core values of “Safety First,
Quality Foremost, Pursuing Excellence”.
With that in mind, Jimah organised a
Healthcare & Wellness Campaign on 3
August 2017 at the plant for all its employees
as part of its annual SHE activities.
It was also the perfect occasion to celebrate
Jimah’s achievement of 2 million safe man-
hours without LTI. LTI, or lost-time injury, is

something that results in a fatality, permanent
disability or time lost from work. It could be
as little as one day or shift.
“Be Healthy, Be Yourself” was the theme
of the campaign, which was aimed at
developing positive attitudes towards
achieving recommended changes in healthy
lifestyle and physical activities, as well as
to ensure that safety and health remains an
integral part of the Group’s work culture.
Activities held during the campaign include
free health screenings by KPJ Seremban
Specialist Hospital which conducted
blood pressure, Body Mass Index (BMI),
cholesterol and glucose tests. There was
also a health talk by Dr Nizar bin Abdul Jalil,
Pain Management Consultant, who spoke
about chronic back pain and slipped disc.

Power training talk at XMUM
E
dra was recently invited to speak at the Industry
Engagement Series (IES) organised by Xiamen
University Malaysia (XMUM). IES is an event by the
university’s Career Services Office where students can
learn from industry speakers about the nature of the
industry and the career pathway they can expect. This
series is designed to connect students and employers for
the purpose of educational and career advice, as well as
mentorship.
Mr Mun Sang Yip (pic), Vice President of Technical &
Construction represented Edra at the event, with his
talk entitled “Introduction to Power Industry – An Edra’s
Perspective”.
Held on 21 June 2017, the talk attracted more than 120 participants including students,
lecturers and staff members from the Faculty of Engineering. It was certainly an enlightening
session for the audience as they listened attentively (and many seen taking notes!) as Mun
spoke on a wide ranging topics relating to power generation.

Mun started off with an introduction of Edra – an overview of its corporate structure,
business and its portfolio of assets, followed by a general briefing on the various type of
power generation technologies available today – ranging from non-renewable to renewable
energy resources.
Also covered was a topic on the power industry in Malaysia – an overview of the industry
structure, Malaysia’s five fuel policy, the country’s sustainable energy development and
Edra’s participation in the clean and renewable energy.
The final part of his talk was of particular interest to the students as it focussed on a typical
project life cycle and what are the career opportunities for engineers at each stage of the
project - from initiation stage; planning and design; execution and controlling; operation
and maintenance; to the completion/closing stage.
All in, it was a very interesting session for the students, with many expressing their
interests in doing internship with Edra as it will be a good exposure for them and relevant
to their studies. Overall, the attendees have positive views of Edra, and they could see the
opportunities available especially for New Energy Science and Engineering students. They
hope that there will be more collaborations between Edra and XMUM such as industrial
visits, research and development.

XMUM Mobile Competition

A
s part of its CSR initiatives to nurture young talents,
Edra sponsored a competition that promotes creative
skills through the one gadget that has literally
redefined the way we live – smartphones!

Only smartphones can be used to submit entries for the

XMUM Mobile Competition 2017, which was divided into
three categories, namely, Mobile Photography, Mobile
Filmmaking and Corporate Video.

The competition was organised by the Center for Mobile

Studies of Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM). XMUM
is the first overseas campus approved by the Chinese
government to be set up by a Chinese university, and its
campus is located at Bandar Sunsuria, Sepang in Selangor.

For the Mobile Photography category, each entry must

consist of 8 pictures complete with unique stories of
XMUM. For the Mobile Filmmaking, each entry must be 1
to 3 minutes long, and for Corporate Video, 3 to 5 minutes.

Aimed at developing interests in mobile studies and honing

students’ skills in mobile filmmaking, photography and
corporate video production, the competition attracted some
80 entries from amongst the XMUM students.

As the sponsor of the competition, Edra was invited to do the

honours at the prize presentation ceremony held on 28 June
2017 at XMUM Campus. Edra Group Chief Financial Officer,
Mr Li Wei Qiang gave away the prizes to the winners. First,
second and third prize winners for each category receive
cash worth RM800, RM500 and RM300 respectively.

Under the Mobile Photography category, the first prize

winner was Jocelyn How Hui Ying with her entry titled
“XMUM, our T-junction”.

The panel of judges did not award the first prize for both
the Mobile Filmmaking and Corporate Video as the entries
submitted did not meet the standards of quality established.

A meaningful Aidilfitri for WOW and Edra

his year’s Hari Raya celebration
was especially meaningful to the
beneficiaries of Women of Will (WOW).

In order to help its women beneficiaries

who are mainly single mothers and
underprivileged women earn extra income

providing aprons for baking to WOW and
purchased the Hari Raya hampers as
corporate gifts to the company’s business
associates in conjunction with Hari Raya

effort was put in by WOW in co-ordinating
the baking sessions.

Baking equipment such as ovens, mixers,

containers were among the items transported
to a community hall which was rented as the
venue for baking.
One of the WOW beneficiaries at the baking
WOW also sought the assistance of Madam session
Shanti Rajoo, a pastry chef from The Ezy
Bake which is a bake shop selling sumptuous
cakes and at the same time offers baking The women displayed exceptional teamwork

A meaningful Aidilfitri for WOW and Edra
Next...the assembling of the
Raya hampers!
It was the start of the fasting month but
that did not deter the women beneficiaries
from making their way to WOW’s office on
a bright Saturday morning on 3 June 2017.
All of them were eager to learn the art of
assembling perfect hampers.
At WOW’s office, the women were taught
how to arrange the cookie jars onto the
beautiful gold colored hamper trays, the
technique of wrapping and decorating the
hampers with beautiful decorative flowers
and ribbons. A pretty songket table runner
(a traditional Malay woven material) which
was sewn by a beneficiary of WOW was also
included in each hamper.
After the demonstration, the women were
divided into 2 groups, where one team was
tasked to assemble 60 units of Tier 1 hampers
while the other team assembled 60 units of
the smaller Tier 2 hampers. Again, these
women displayed great teamwork among
themselves. They took pride in making sure
that each hamper they had assembled was
perfect.
It was indeed heartwarming, seeing
the excitement on their faces and their
determination in wanting to deliver their best
efforts to earn some extra income for their
families.
Once all the hampers were
done, these hampers
were transported to
Edra’s head office. The
hampers were then
dispatched to our
business associates
celebrating Hari Raya
for them to enjoy with
their families and
friends.

Edra and WOW at Go As One Carnival

ugust 31st is Malaysia’s Independence WOW’s beneficiary, Noorzainny Lufhti (in black

There were plenty of activities happening
in the capital city and around the country
as Malaysians celebrated the nation’s 60th
independence this year.

One such activity was the “Go As One

Carnival” that was organised by Universiti
Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) on Saturday,
12 August 2017. Edra joined hands with Customers were spoilt for choice by the wide selection
Women of Will (WOW) to take part in the food of yummy Malay cakes
carnival that was held at UTAR’s campus at
Bandar Sungai Long, Kajang, Selangor.

WOW took up 5 booths at the bazaar, selling

a wide array of delicious homemade food
prepared by 10 of its women beneficiaries.
There were Malay traditional cakes, Sarawak
kuih lapis (layered cake), nasi lemak, plus a
variety of snack food. In addition, the ladies
also served hot meals which, needless to
say, were a great hit with the crowd. Who
doesn’t love a steaming hot bowl of noodles
or a delicious plate of chicken rice!
Lending a helping hand to the ladies were
our very own Edrans, as part of the Group’s
ongoing CSR partnership with WOW.
Everyone rolled up their sleeves and pitched
in to help. Some tried their best with their
sales pitch to attract more crowd to the
booths – all with the aim of trying to raise as
much sales for WOW’s women beneficiaries
and have fun as well. It is a great sense of
fulfilment for Edrans knowing that they
have helped these underprivileged ladies in
whatever way they could.

A smashing first-time performance by Team CGN Edra
T
eam CGN Edra made an impressive
debut in the badminton tournament
organised by the Chinese Enterprises
Association in Malaysia (CEAM) on 29 July
2017 at the Kompleks Sukan Setiawangsa,
Kuala Lumpur.
The tournament attracted the participation
of 25 member companies of CEAM, which
sent a total of 74 teams comprising 54 men’s
doubles team and 20 mixed doubles team.

the courts and left a positive impression on
the Organisers.
Even Mdm. Shi Ziming, Economic &
Commercial Counsellor of the Chinese
Embassy was impressed, expressing her
admiration of our supporters in her closing
speech. She commented that CGN Edra
has the top supporters and was the most
coordinated among all the participating
companies. She added that our presence
has spiced up the atmosphere, especially
with the loud cheers of jiáyóu (Chinese
cheer).
Two of our men’s doubles pairs made it to
the quarter finals of the competition, which
was played on a knock-out basis. The pairs
were Mohd Alamein bin Mohd Hasim / Mohd
Shahrir bin Mohd Ali and James Lee Yeong
Sheng/Noryarolazha bin Yahaya.
Republic of China in Malaysia also sent in a
team to the tournament.
Team CGN Edra consisted of two pairs
of mixed doubles and four pairs of men’s
doubles. Our team had a good mix of
shuttlers from Head Office, Jimah, KLPP,
Telok Gong and Tanjong Kling Power
Stations. Among the players were Group
CFO, Mr Li Wei Qiang and Group Chief Audit
Executive, Mr John Chen Qiang.
Team Captain, Mr Tang Yang Yang along with
an enthusiastic group of Edrans and families
were there to cheer on the players. Dato’
Mark Ling, President & Executive Director
and Mr Brian Sung, Executive Director were
also present to lend their voice and support.
Three cheers for our cheerleaders and pom-pom team which did a great job … hip hip hooray!

July is the rainy season in Bangladesh.

canals & ponds reflect rays of the sun. You will feel like Elysian. Malaysia

Heaven. Mother Nature has blessed us with this natural beauty
which can’t be seen from any other parts of the world.
